@David: Yeah, thanks for the introduction. I could chat a little with her before the show started. She has a nice project coming up, in a bridge. I liked her set a lot, she really filled up the space and moving around changed the balance. Different from the previous times, in part because the speakers were better so she could do more

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

Kulik, and this whole group, stellar.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Sem:

@steveo: getting that, too. Vibrating something inside, warmly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
coelacanth∅:

steveo understandable. i think i would've thought it was cool for about 2 minutes then wanted "something to happen"
...i was a young teen when i heard "(no pussyfooting)", which was a step toward flinging these doors open; but i probably wouldn't have been so open to it had it not been Brian Eno.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
steveo:

yeah, i couldn't even get them to listen to Brian Turner yesterday afternoon: "too weird". but hopefully it's all priming their ears and minds to be open more than the average.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
david w:

I'm sitting here trying to recall my introduction to, and ultimate acceptance of, severely minimalist music. Ambient (Airport Music) and some writings by Satie cracked me open. But the deep listening thing where micro-events (Niblock, LaMonte) need to be savored, took me years more to dig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
coelacanth∅:

steveo you plant the seeds and you fertilize but ultimately it's beyond your control. it's in them though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
northguineahills:

I didn't even start listening to music that wasn't top 40 until I was 16. Something happened at 18, and by 19 I was almost exclusively listening to noise, ambient and drone. Then, at 22 I rediscovered pop, and then my horizons really exploded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
northguineahills:

It took my wife a good 5 years w/ me to get into seriously difficult music. Now she travels the northeast just to see the likes of Terry Riley and Charlemagne Palestine, and w/in the last two years, started making like minded music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
coelacanth∅:

david, yeah it was a gradual process. (no pussyfooting) was a great starting point, because it's droney but not completely droney. it was definitely years after that.
Avatar 4:37pm
geezerette:

Laptop just switched to stream. Gonna restart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm

for me it was simple, just listen to wfmu for 20 years, and blammo
Avatar 4:38pm
geezerette:

Fine now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
northguineahills:

Eno and Fripp was my gateway right as I was graduating HS, as I was already into shoegaze. I was already in Satie, and it didn't take long for me to get into post-war composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
northguineahills:

Although, we John Cage died, the alternative rock station in Jacksonville played 30 minutes of John Cage, I was probably 18 before I got my first Cage record, but that planted a seed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
david w:

I'm glad you can tell, geez. It sounded like glitches until the trombone came in!
Avatar 4:47pm
geezerette:

I've often thought that you maybe have to be wired for music like this. Hearing John Cage when I was in High School was like a validation and permission to go with my natural tendencies.
Minimalism in visual art is also my preference, natural language.

David, yeah,I stopped what I was doing and thought,"that's not right!".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
coelacanth∅:

g, maybe you're right -though i hope not! i'll likely never have kids but i have helped raise some and i hope my influence hasn't been for nothing. they certainly never got any sense of musical adventure from their biological parents.
