A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

When I attempted to rekindle my vinyl appreciation a few years ago, the first few records I got were sound effects and bird call records… But someone in my building has an amped up CB rig (ex-cop) and the interference that comes through the stereo suddenly boomed louder through the needle pickup. Like bird calls and then endless retired cops yammerig about their CB sets. So had to ditch the setup.

Duende or tener duende ("having duende") loosely means having soul, a heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity, often connected with flamenco. The artistic and especially musical term was derived from the duende, an elf or goblin-like magic creature in Spanish mythology.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
steveo:

El duende is the spirit of evocation. It comes from inside as a physical/emotional response to art. It is what gives you chills, makes you smile or cry as a bodily reaction to an artistic performance that is particularly expressive. Folk music in general, especially flamenco, tends to embody an authenticity that comes from a people whose culture is enriched by diaspora and hardship; vox populi, the human condition of joys and sorrows. Drawing on popular usage and Spanish folklore, Federico García Lorca first developed the aesthetics of Duende in a lecture he gave in Buenos Aires in 1933, "Juego y teoria del duende" ("Play and Theory of the Duende").

I guess I gotta be a more avid listener. I mainly just listen on my commute. I only recently discovered Las grecas, bought the first 2 records on the street. I had no idea who they were, I was hooked.

Golf courses drive too much water and pesticide use. They can go watch Caddyshack instead. Save the classic theaters!

It's worth checking out Rupert Sheldrake's research on homing pigeon navigation. It seems than none of the speculative materialist/mechanistic explanations suffice to explain how they do it. We have NO idea, basically, and because this is a major embarrassment to scientific materialism, it hardly gets any airtime.

@Canterbury they also don't know why pigeons do their signature neck movement when they walk. I was listening to an NPR show about pigeons and was disappointed when someone called in with a question about this and the experts had no answer.
