Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am bore:

good morning Joe and all!
  9:42am Brendan:

Good morning Joe. So I take it we’ll never hear an opening set of Ethel Merman. I’m okay with that.
Avatar 9:43am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Never say never!
Avatar 9:45am Mike D.:

An opening set of alternating Ethel Merman/Guns N' Roses tracks could be fun. A battle of the two of the greatest shriekers of all time, and an added bonus of waking up anyone who wasn't awoken by the Box of Pain that morning!
Avatar 9:46am Joe McG:

@MikeD: Ha ha ha!
Swag For Life Member 9:47am Walt:

Fun (?) fact of the day: The cover art of the LP "Magic Christian Music" by Badfinger is a takeoff of some of the recurring images in de Chirico's early paintings.

de Chirico:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am steveo:

@walt good stuff
  9:48am the illuminated void:

Hi koe. Usually catch your show when i cleaned my brothers restaurant Writing at home today. Peace
Avatar 9:49am Joe McG:

Robyn Hitchcock also did a nice song called "De Chirico Street" inspired by his paintings.
  9:49am the illuminated void:

sorry Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am karlward:

Who is singing harmony on this Dave Evans track? It's great.
Avatar 9:52am Joe McG:

@IV: That's OK! Glad my show is practical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am steveo:

i love de chirico's oddly distorted perspective; can't find that song on wfmu playlists using google
Avatar 9:53am Joe McG:

@Karlw: I don't know! Maybe one of the female folkies on The Village Thing label. Our promo has no notes. Find out for me and I'll tell the people. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am suzyhotrod:

Joe McGasko! Thanks for making Monday mornings at my new corporate full time job pleasant, at least for my ears. (I'm crashing and burning in this world!) -Suzy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am steveo:

@karlward @joe Adrienne Webber

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am karlward:

Joe: Discogs and other sources on the web say it's Adrienne Webber singing harmony with Dave Evans. Digging further for clues.
Avatar 9:57am Joe McG:

Oh, Suzy, glad I can ease your pain! Thanks for saying hi. @steveo and Karl: Thanks, fellas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am SSS:

@Suzy, the world is crashing and burning....just step back a bit, you'll be fine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am MD:

Good Morning all! How's the breathing???
  10:02am exile-on-hicks-st:

I recall an episode of MASH when a doctor (Hawkeye? Honeycutt?) had to talk someone (Radar?) through a trach’ over a radio...

Yes mash with the pen

Wow. Happy Monday!

Hawkeye. Radar used a ball point pen.
  10:04am exile-on-hicks-st:

He had to insert a straw or something... after that, I thought, if I had to, I could do it, too. Every time I see the trach’ scar, i think of that episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Asheville Jon:

any songs about appendicitis or perhaps exczema?
  10:04am exile-on-hicks-st:

Waterloo Tracheotomy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am The Oscar:

Mornin'! I feel like this song pairs well with Sufjan Stevens's Tonya Harding song from last year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Listener Scott:

Shouldn't the opportunity to sign this song be given to someone with a tracheotomy?
  10:04am exile-on-hicks-st:

Thank you Paul!!
  10:05am paul:

You're welcome!
Avatar 10:05am Joe McG:

"Famous Tracheotomies" is my Song of the Week, no doubt. If I had a Song of the Week.

Avatar 10:15am Joe McG:

@Kurt: She's a pip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am The Oscar:

The curse of growing up in the late 20th century is how many classic songs I first heard in commercials. I really wish I could hear this song without thinking that it's about Pizza Hut.
  10:18am Chi Bill:

Big Sugar, adding to my 13 pages of band names I first heard here. Discovered WFMU around '04 on rental car radio. WFMU saves brain cells. Thanks Joe!
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

You bet, Chi Bill!
Avatar 10:19am βrian:

@TO: I meant to watch TV, but I kept getting distracted. Now I miss a lot of references. So it goes.
Avatar 10:20am βrian:

Rental Car Radio. There's a fertile term. Maybe that could be incorporated into a billboard theme.
Avatar 10:21am northguineahills:

I was more of a Montenegro fan myself....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am steveo:

@chi bill -- Maybe it was me! I always set button #1 to WFMU when I get a rental car (which is several times a year in NYC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Guido from Cologne:

  10:24am Chi Bill:

Past 3 years, 13 pages of scribble both sides - estimate at least 500 band names. WFMU soothes the soul.
HA! Stveo, defitely your preset! Bottom of FM dial is where the cool people go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am steveo:

haha yeah
Avatar 10:27am βrian:

Which station is at the extreme left in NYC? That's always been one of WCBN's slogans.

Wow, that kicked ASS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am MD:

Long Island University has a station in nassau county at 88.1 that i might get in brooklyn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am MD:

trake my wife please!!!
Swag For Life Member 10:32am Walt:

WRAS Atlanta: "Left on the dial, right on the music." Also "Keep it locked to the left." Formerly a great college station, Governor Deal gave 14 air hours a day to Georgia Public Broadcasting as a political payoff and the station has gone downhill since then IMO. This was after student fees had been raised for a few years to pay for a $500k transmitter (the station broadcasts at 100k watts).
Avatar 10:36am herb.nyc:

i just got the new OKKERVIL RIVER too, and that is a great song. (oops, i used to say OAK-ERVIL RIVER until someone said it's "OCK-ERVIL ya twit")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am pantz:

Brit Pop from the late 70's early 80's is the best.
  10:38am Larky-loo:

Loved WRAS.. where I first heard the Clash
Avatar 10:38am Lixiviated Life:

mercy indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Hughie Considine:

Amazing how this 1962 single sounds like it could be from several other decades. Pre-Beatles '60s - it was all wide open.
  10:42am Chi Bill:

So, cool people are far left. That settles that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am steveo:

But the winner in NYC has to be WNYZ-LP at 87.75 FM (TV channel 6) en.wikipedia.org...

"During most of its life while operating on channel 6, the station has been operated more as a radio station than a television station. WNYZ-LP broadcasts video, usually silent movies which are repeated throughout the day, for the likely reason to fulfill the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirement that some sort of video be broadcast on the frequency because WNYZ-LP is licensed as a television facility."

'The audio programming on WNYZ was originally Russian Top 40 (Radio Vsyo - Russian for "Radio Everything"). Late in 2007, it was announced that the station would be changing the audio format to a Dance-intensive Rhythmic Top 40 format as "Pulse 87".'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Asheville Jon:

always great to hear ABBA !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Hughie Considine:

I guess this is ABBA reacting to the glam era?
Avatar 10:44am Joe McG:

@Hughie: Totally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Devin B.:

Oh nice! Was just listening to He Said last week.
  10:50am paul:

Take a Wham song and make it better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am pantz:

This should have been a reggae song all along!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Hughie Considine:

Happy to say that "Guilty feet have got not rhythm" has been my WFMU personal statement for years. I feel so validated and iree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am The Oscar:

A question I once posed some friends: when you do air-sax, is the inevitable song "Careless Whisper" or "Baker Street?"
  10:52am the illuminated void:

i do have to say Joe your weird refreshing mix is unique and genius. Like WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Hughie Considine:

@Oscar, I'd have to go with "Baker Street," by an evanescent curlicue of a sax lick ...
  10:56am paul:

The Cowsills were a lot cooler than people realized.
Avatar 10:57am Joe McG:

Thanks, IV! Single File is the most freeform (some would say "random") portion of the program.
  11:00am the illuminated void:

"random" thats a knock on your style and taste of whom you are.. the genius of all the djs is a subtle magic of our individuality.
Avatar 11:01am βrian:

Stochastic Joe. It works whatever it is.
  11:01am Brendan:

That was a wistful set sloser
  11:01am Brendan:

  11:01am jdubz:

what is the background song? so good!!!
  11:02am paul:

Don't forget Coven, Joe.
Avatar 11:03am northguineahills:

@jdubz: Kevin Ayers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am The Oscar:

Wasn't the Billy Jack theme by Coven? That always struck me as one of the most hilarious musical Trojan horses of all time-- the rest of their material was overtly Satanic psych-rock!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am The Oscar:

(d'oh-- just saw Paul's post!)
  11:04am Brendan:

@jbubz that probably qualifies as the most asked question here. It’s called Crystal Clear - a demo by Kevin Ayers
  11:04am paul:

Both groups did it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Mick:

Original Caste did it first, but not on the Billy Jack soundtrack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Mick:

Pretty sure Coven was the Billy Jack version
  11:05am Mark in Toronto:

Mr. Monday?
  11:06am paul:

What Mick said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am The Oscar:

And strictly speaking, IIRC, the Billy Jack version just the singer from Coven with a session band, but she demanded they use the Coven name to promote her band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am tom from Glasgow:

honestly didn't know Roky Erikson was alive
  11:07am Mark in Toronto:

In Canada, Mr. Monday was a charted hit by the Original Caste, but it did not chart in the USA
  11:07am frenchee:

<sadly unpacks all those Montovani discs>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Krys O.:

Susannah is awesome!!!
  11:08am frenchee:

@tom from Glasgow: not sure Roky knows either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Hughie Considine:

I wonder if Stephin Merritt has any more stunt LPs left in him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am tom from Glasgow:

i like calling them sessions because i am, at heart, a child of John Peel
  11:11am Brendan:

When Susannah comes by I ‘ll be coming by too . From Alabama. With a banjo on my ... oh shut up Brendan
Avatar 11:12am northguineahills:

Sachiko, live, squeeeeeee!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Hughie Considine:

I had the same thought @Brendan. But I held back.
Avatar 11:12am northguineahills:

Brendan answered that question better then I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am tom from Glasgow:

will you be coming round the mountain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Ike:

Re: 2020, you said it, Joe. When that happens, I'll plotz! Whatever that means.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am tom from Glasgow:

in 2020 we'll all be able to see really well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am SSS:

Plotz - To collapse in semi comic fatigue / dismay / confusion....if I get my Yiddish right.

@Tom, GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAN (and/or obligatory rimshot sound effect)
Avatar 11:18am βrian:

@Tom: Meaning hindsight?
Avatar 11:21am Joe McG:

Sachiko was bummed that she didn't have her "Misora" guitar with her to play "Blue Fish" since the action is so different, but I think she did fine!
  11:21am Brendan:

I must confess I don’t understand Japanese but the ‘bap a dap a doo doo’ part somehow speaks to me . I think we all retain a lifelong memory of those sounds as a baby . Or maybe we regurgitate the babble sounds adults serenaded us with as infants.
Avatar 11:22am βrian:

They're selling advance tickets to Plotz 2020.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am steveo:

lovely; so glad she came in and did this
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

@Brendan: I'll briefly translate the songs afterwards at Sachiko's request!
  11:25am Jordan in Philly:

Instant goosebumps: this session is sounding incredible, Joe! Thanks so much for making it happen. Cheers to you and Sachiko!
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

You bet, Jordan! I love this new song "Wings of Light"!
  11:30am Brendan:

Thanks Joe ( and Sachiko for being so thoughtful). They sound great in any lingo. And no sweat about not playing Blue Fish. I hear she makes up for it with a mean version of Green Grass and High Tides as the closer. Got my lighter ready.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Mick:

Thank you and Sachiko for this set - I agree this new song is beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Krys O.:

Such a treasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Hughie Considine:

Thanks Joe. I know the artists don't get much but I may just have to go to the iTunes store and purchase her songs there.
