Daniel Kahn's music has been described as "alienation klezmer" and "Yiddish punk cabaret". The Detroit-born, Berlin-based Kahn combines his own politically charged compositions with re-imaginings of pieces in Yiddish, English, German, and Russian.
Daniel Kahn and his band The Painted Bird have a great new album called The Butcher's Share on Germany's Oriente Musik label.
They will be coming to North America to help spread the word, including at least three NY area shows:
They'll join fellow travelers Golem, Andy Statman, Pharaoh's Daughter, Frank London's Klezmer Brass All Stars and more Wednesday night June 13th at the
Central Park Summerstage Yiddish Under the Stars concert extravaganza.
They'll head north to play as part of the fabulous Jet Lag Festival in Downsville NY with a show on Sat. June 23rd (the festival runs June 22-24).
And they'll be back in NYC to play at the JCC in Manhattan, 334 Amsterdam Ave. on Tuesday evening June 26th.
Daniel and the band were recent guests on David Dichelle's wonderful show Continental Subway, broadcast out of Radio Blau in Leipzig, Germany and heard Tuesdays 4-7 pm (Garden State time) on WFMU's WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio stream. (And highly recommended especially if you like Rob's show!) We'll rebroadcast that interview and performance on our show this week.
