Love that Lenny. Dreamed of having his hair once.

Hello, David, those traveling coach, hanging on up on the roof, and determinedly falling slightly behind hoofing it don the tracks behind trying to get a handhold.

Bernstein 100! The big Deutsche Grammophon box of CDs is very tempting...

It was a big deal when the Clash filmed their video for this in Austin. A girl from my school could be seen briefly in the concert audience.

How is the Hillage work on this album? Hadn't heard of it before.

Hey all, great opening set!

Hello and thanks, Doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm

Dean: Steve Hillage produced and did a lot on the album: en.wikipedia.org...
  4:19pm
Dean:

...which renders it pretty much a must-have.
  4:22pm

Evidently, it is one of Dick Cavett's favorite overtures, too. It was his television talk show's theme song.

Henry: Yes, and I can imagine Mission Impossible working with Tomorrow Never Knows too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm

well, i've collected maybe 60 versions and heard another few dozen of tnk and never heard this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm

Steve Cabbage also does a good version of "Tomorrow Never Knows"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
coelacanth∅:

strangely Dave Matthews' version is very good - as is Phil Collins'
...i don't expect people to believe me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
david w:

You are going deep. Norwegian Wood in the #metoo era is prescient. He doesn't seduce her, and in the flip version, wow. And Tomorrow Never Knows is probably the most critical single transformative moment in pop history. Chord changes beware!

I thought that Els 4 Gats sounded Spanish, but couldn't quite understand it. Being Cantalunyan explains it!

Yes, indeed - the 104th rising of this particular Sun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
David D:

David W: I was always slightly confused by the meaning of Norwegian Wood, myself, to be honest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
david w:

@Norwegiann Wood: It's pretty abstract. But basically, respect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
coelacanth∅:

i always just took norwegian wood as a story of how he's used to being in control but this woman taught him something...and that fucking or whatever became not the goal.
  5:08pm
melinda:

I am still confused by Norwegian Wood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
David D:

I guess I grew up thinking it was all one big metaphor for drugs - says something about me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Sem:

I read a Lennon interview, and he said he was afraid of revealing too much about his relationship with "the bird", so that his wife wouldn't get wise. Hence the louche narrative, in the original sense of the word, meaning "cross-eyed."
  5:15pm
melinda:

The Norwegian wood reference is what confused me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm
coelacanth∅:

haha...not sure i want to touch that one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
coelacanth∅:

...triple entendre though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
coelacanth∅:

(?)
  5:20pm
melinda:

@coel yeah I thought of possible meanings after I wrote it, haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
coelacanth∅:

well- subtle enough that nobody panicked in 1966 when it hit the airwaves
  5:23pm
Dean:

Listened to one of Schleiermacher's Cage records just this weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
Sem:

Just so, @coel. Pretty melody, and he went off to sleep in the bath. Chaste, even;-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
coelacanth∅:

...but still burning in the morning, despite controlling himself the night before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Sem:

Ah well, also true. Not sure if he was successful in deceiving Cynthia, who would one ask?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
coelacanth∅:

(and i guess - if it was in fact autobiographical...and most of John's songs were - her being norwegian is a clue about who it was)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
coelacanth∅:

now that Cynthia's also moved ahead, maybe Paul or Ringo would tell.
maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
Sem:

@melinda: from the wikithingy entry for the song:" Paul McCartney explained that the term "Norwegian Wood" was a sarcastic reference to the cheap pine wall panelling then in vogue (e.g. in guitarist Peter Asher's bedroom)."
Avatar 5:33pm
northguineahills:

I got that Stockhausen record at a flea market in Berlin, actually....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
David D:

NGH: Yes, I really need to head up there with a large sack or something...
  5:36pm
melinda:

Sem that's really funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
coelacanth∅:

hmm i didn't know that,Sem. when i was little i assumed it was the wooden walls &/or furniture in her flat; and in the morning the narrator burned the house down...but then when i was a little older i decided the woman was (also?) norwegian and lighting a fire [of norwegian wood] was a double entendre with a third implication as well.
...maybe i'm reading too much into it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
coelacanth∅:

...of course, it's not uncommon for a beatle, or former beatle to lie about a song meaning!
Avatar 5:41pm
northguineahills:

@coel: (ie "why don't we do it in the road" & "Lucy in the Sky W/ Diamonds".

I asked my hippie aunt when I was 17 if Lucy in the Sky W/ Diamonds was about LSD, and she said yes (we were out of earshot of my parents).
Avatar 5:43pm
northguineahills:

(well, she wasn't actually a hippie, but compared to my fundy parents I thought she was at the time).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
coelacanth∅:

ha - that aunt is a keeper!
i wonder what my aunt would've said, had i asked her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
coelacanth∅:

...i guess she's also not amongst us any more. sorry to hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
david w:

I stick to "respect" as the theme. Whether your drugs or your partner, you have to give it up. Cheap accommodations just a sideshow. But nice poetry.
  5:46pm
melinda:

I always pictured a nice toasty fire in a hearth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
Sem:

Yes, david w., the song succeeds as poetry because we can all bring our own nuance to it, without the "truth" being so baldly stated that the mystery disappears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
coelacanth∅:

david, you're wise to keep it simple, because, regardless - that is the bottom line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
Sem:

...and speaking of disappearing, this is where I get off, so to say. Thank you, D.D., and traveling companions. Next time, then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
coelacanth∅:

happy trails Sem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
David D:

Have a good night, Sem, thanks for accompanying us!
  5:50pm
melinda:

And I visualized Norwegian wood as a log of driftwood
  5:51pm
Dean:

Wait, it's not a song with a refrain in the subjunctive mood?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda, now, thinking back, i guess i did imagine a fire in a hearth as well...only it was her beautiful wooden furniture burning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
coelacanth∅:

(either way by the time i was a teenager i'd attached other meanings to it)
  5:54pm
melinda:

Coel that seems more likely than regular firewood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Webhamster Henry:

Henry: Back in Leipzig again actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
coelacanth∅:

ngh mine was my father's twin. we always considered her very cool, though i never thought "hippie". she always -even as she was outliving her survival prognosis by over 10 years, her 7th decade - looked much younger than she was. she turned me on to Odetta, ledbelly, gamelan music, king sunny adé, Leon Bibb and much more.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
David D:

NGH: They are in fact Nubian.
Avatar 6:20pm
northguineahills:

I have my mother's blood (Von Willebrands syndrome [aka false hemophilia], so platelet count is always low). If I have father's vascular system, I'm fucked. When I bleed, I bleed. (Considering how uncareful I am, and pain doesn't bother me too much, it's quite often)
Avatar 6:20pm
northguineahills:

I handle lots of blood (usually my own), better then my wife.
Avatar 6:22pm

Oh, @coel, that's tre cool. No music/art flows in my family (unless my father singing and playing guitar at the church choir counts)
Avatar 6:23pm

Wasn't John Mayer Scottish-Indian? And put out that album Indo-Jazz fusion? (can't remember the title).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
David D:

NGH: I wish I knew more about that sort of thing, but it does sound like something to keep an eye on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
coelacanth∅:

does vitamin k (available naturally in alfalfa) help?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
David D:

Mayer was from India, lived in England, and did quite a few things along those lines.
Avatar 6:30pm
northguineahills:

I believe Hamza El Din was Nubian (my first oud record [cd])
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
coelacanth∅:

ngh if bleeding too much ever becomes a bigger issue than it seems to be now, and you consider trying alfalfa to assist in blood coagulation, i suggest using whole alfalfa leaf capsules or tablets...NOT "concentrate" or "extract" - which may leave behind co-factors that assist in the utilization of the beneficial constituents.
...not that you asked me.
  6:32pm
Dean:

Nonesuch's The Water Wheel? That was mine. Favorite, though, is Water Lily Acoustics' Lily of the Nile LP. Had the pleasure of hearing Hamza el Din perform at McCabe's Guitar Shop on Pico Blvd.
Avatar 6:35pm
northguineahills:

@coel: Well, i have platelets, it's just that I don't create enough proteins for them to stick together. Fortunately, It hasn't been a problem since I was 20 w/ my last knee surgery and I had to wait a month b/c my platelet count was too low. Oh, and when I slice my hand down to the bone [washing a narrow beer glass at home] and had to make a tourniquet and got 9 stitches. My wife nearly fainted. NYU Medical Center saw me w/in 15 minutes. My hand looked like some one cut into a lobster claw. Good fun!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm

dammit be careful!! (also do some research. i haven't been in the field for a while and there's always new information...but definitely the leaves NOT the seeds; and alfalfa sprouts are probably not all that good for people either)

@coel: As I texted my wife this week, ngh ≠ careful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
coelacanth∅:

...that said, i will at least tell you that i've seen good results with alfalfa tablets for a condition that was " similar to hemophilia, but not hemophilia"...i don't remember but maybe it was the same condition. the mother said i saved her daughter's life by suggesting it; but then one day we were out of it, and she bought a "standardized extract" of alfalfa. sure enough the girl cut herself and it did not work.
