Isn't it so much nicer to have a title like "Little Rootie Tootie"? Rather than Piano Opus 74, say.

The portrait of Monk on Wikipedia shows him sitting at the piano. I noticed that the fingers of his left hand are displayed in the classic pianoforte curved position.

I desperately recommend the book Three Wishes. It features many dozens of intimate, unposed photos of musicians taken by Pannonica de Koenigswarter in her 5th Avenue apartment and at her home in Weehawken. It presents copious stunning snaps of Thelonious.

The Baroness was a friend, patron and support system for countless musicians, but she had a particularly close connection with Monk. With many of the musicians who crashed at her pad, she would ask them, "If you were given three wishes, to be instantly granted, what would they be?"

Here are the answers Monk gave her:

1. To be successful musically.
2. To have a happy family.
3. To have a crazy friend like you.

"But, Thelonious!," Nica responded, "You have those already!"

Please check for any whole-phone-level volume control you can find (Apple is discouraging volume controls in apps, I've heard) and if things continue to act funny please drop us a note via the Feedback / Send Comment button in the app (sorry I don't know the exact text because I don't have an iOS device here to test with) so we can follow up in depth.

Monk spent his last decade living at Pannonica de Koenigswarter's house in Weekawken. He had dubbed her place the Cathouse, because Nica owned 122 cats (though not all at the same time). There book features a number of photos of Monk with cats: goo.gl...
