βrian, the US basically destroyed Cuban agriculture before the revolution and since the embargo was imposed pretty much immediately after, it never had a chance to recover. so there just isn't the quality produce available there. they can't import from the US, and most people couldn't afford the imported produce anyway...

She mentioned the basic quality of the food was ok, but that seasoning didn't seem to be part of the local culture. They even seemed to disapprove of folks requesting black pepper at table, for example.
