amani:

hi mark, amani from NJ here, just wanted to say this show has really turned me on to a lot of great music I doubt I would have come in contact with otherwise. You really craft mixes that are full of personality and feature wide ranges of emotion. Just wanted to say thank you for all the great work you do on circle time and for passing down so much great music in such an interesting way

Good Morning. I'm usually working now but I'm off for the holiday so it's nice to be able to listen. Great start BTW.

Thanks Amani, that means a lot to me.

What a coincedence. I was JUST listening to the first track of weeping bong band this morning in the train. Very very nice.

I was scouring our library looking for Robert Palmer's version--even looked in our auxiliary library down in the basement, but no luck!

dan mcanulty:

out on the west coast working on a big report, and drinking whiskey, your show has been a godsend, thanks for it :)
I had to laugh when you said it was 1am on the west coast, maybe some of us had had a few drinks. I was mid-paragraph and couldn't stop to comment, but I've just finished my draft, and wanted to say you nailed it, and thanks for putting some great records and thoughts on the air. Much appreciated.
  4:14am
markr:

Thanks, Dan. I went to high school with a guy with a very similar name to yours, ha. Glad I could help with your report.

dan mcanulty:

I hadn't seen the wire (and still haven't been meaning to), but apparently there's a character called dan mcnulty nicknamed mcnutty, and it took me like a decade to figure out why people liked calling me mcnutty. Apparently it's endearing on the show :)
I grew up in pennsylvania, south of pittsburgh, I remember buying a used tape of some best of dylan, with Visions of Johanna and Leopard skin pill box had on it, and I can still picture the dirt and old machinery that I was looking at while listening to it on my walkman. Strange visions and memories in all our brains. Music sure is some magical stuff.
  4:20am
dan mcanulty:

er, still haven't <comma> been meaning to

dan mcanulty:

going out for a cigarette, and then going to proof read. I play a lot of west african guitar music, like ali farka toure. you play it with your thumb and index finger. This john lee hooker reminds me of it. Interestingly you can see RL Burnside playing that way in his Jumper Hanging on the Line track that Lomax recorded, there's a good version of it on youtube, recorded 1978.

That's sort of a request, if you want to take it that way. Love this hooker sounding stuff, anything with a malian desert blues tinge that you're into, I'd dig hearing :)
  4:29am
dan mcanulty:

The holiday aspect of decoration day does not escape me though, so don't let me screw up any of your track plans, I don't need to hear anything in particular.

I always like to celebrate armistice day, in particular, if I can I try to make peace with someone.

Digging your visions of johanna memory, thanks for sharing it :)

was flying to france with Laetitia Sonami recently, to do some work with her, and she mentioned to me mid-flight that there was a suzanne ciani documentary in the films available to watch, which really pleased her.

eola:

Great program. Listening from Aberystwyth, Mid Wales, UK xxx
  5:07am
markr:

Yes, a cool doc like that can help pass the time on a long flight. The movie selection seems better (deeper) on international flights than on domestic ones. XXX, Eola. Sending my best wishes to Wales.

Visiting late as usual. Crackly ambient, nice. I have a Terry Riley double LP, Persian Surgery Dervishes, that sounds like that.
