Congrats on the promotion, Creamo! Now, for a second I thought Nick Cave (the musician) was dead. Good to hear otherwise.

I saw Birthday Party a few weeks after I started university in 1983 at UNSW (Sydney Australia). Support band were the Scientists. Just stunning live, never quite got over that one. Closest thing he does to that now is his Grinderman project, but that not nearly so scary.

I AM VERY JEALOUS

Scientists finally coming to the US this fall, so I guess that's sumpin.

It was every junkie goth in Sydney and about 3 actual students in the crowd. Downright frightening, but unlike anything I've seen or heard since. Nick the Stripper indeed. Scientists live will be brilliant, enjoy.

Neato show, very "you are there". As for the Scientists, are they playing Union Pool in Brooklyn?

Yeah 2 shows in October.

Roland S Howard has a younger brother. Plays with some other underground Oz legends as Harry Howard and The NDE, worth a look too.

Are there any books to recommend on Nick Cave, B-Day Party or Australia in general?

Ha! I was just about to say them's big shoes to fill but osvi beat me to it.
Daytime slots are tougher for me but I'm sure I'll catch at least bits and pieces here and there. Who knows, maybe I'll get in a terrible accident and be bedridden with my WFMU app!

Derek in Midwood:

Always thought Phill Calvert got a raw deal. He was a founding member of the BP and drums on all their best recordings, as soon as they fired him they rapidly went down hill. As the old saying goes you ain't shit without a good drummer , like other great punk/ post punk band's drummers (Clash and the DK's first album) he had that jazz ability, Prayers On Fire and Junk Yard really clearly illustrate his brilliance. As soon as he was gone they were bad mouthing him in the press saying his drumming wasn't up to par and he wasn't getting the new tunes. But in my opinion it was the tunes that weren't up to snuff. If memory serves me in 1982 he wrote a letter to John Peel apologizing for the poor quality of the tunes on their lately recorded session which had gone out a week earlier, it was tunes that were eventually released on the Bad Seed ep. Peel bless his cotton socks read the letter out on the air, a week later Phil was gone from The BP, but much to my amazement another week after that he was drumming with the Psychedelic Furs on the Old Grey Whistle Test. They were promoting the release of their third alum. He'd gone from one favorite band to another in the space of a couple of weeks! Though in retrospect for me both bands had already peaked and were on the down slope. While Mick Harvey is a fine musician he is not a great drummer and The BP never hit the heady heights they had achieved on their first three LPs , incl Boys Next Door. Funny reading the message board above Scientists are playing Union Pool in October and Nick Cave is playing Barclays Centre, wonder if they're opening for him? Thanks for the tunes Creamo, loving this show and good luck in the new slot.

You made me worry!!. When I look at a playlist and there's only one artist, it used to be an obituary show.
