WHAT? Oy. Again, I'm stymied by the passage of time. Gotta love the Cars.

I appreciate what you are playing but man… I need some of that flange at the beginning of “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight.”

Weird... but in a way I like it
  9:39pm
Stevel:

Strange (as I've never heard the demos) but still fucking great. I'd have to say the album production benefited The Cars much like Butch Vig helped propel Nirvana. (Nerd, nerd, nerd. )
  9:40pm
Stevel:

efd: Did you see them live around the first album? Inquiring minds...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
efd:

nah, I was too much of a wuss to try to go to clubs when I was underage. Didn't see them until the mid-80s at Forest Hills tennis stadium, of all places.

I Heard a live feed broadcast from Philly on the first tour. Roy Thomas Baker earned his fee.

FunFact™: When I was a teen in the early 1980s and was hunting around for computer games for my Atari, I was in “The Computer Center”, an early NYC mini computer chain on 57th Street and spotted… Greg Hawkes! He was shopping for an Apple IIc among the aisles. I asked a clerk if that was “Greg Hawkes from the Cars” and he basically told me to scram. Had to be 1984 since that is when the IIc came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
efd:

Generally I think RTB boosted the songs and made the album what it was, but I still think the demo version of "Just What I Needed" is pretty much perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Bootsie:

Yeah, I'm liking this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
efd:

haha, I am literally lol-ing at the clerk telling you to scram! So old-timey! :)
  9:48pm

He certainly pulled the keyboards up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
efd:

ok, the drums do sound better on the LP version.
  9:49pm
JakeGould:

Ha! Thanks. I get old times people things happening to me all the time.

Wasn’t their first album basically their whole live set at the time they were signed?
  9:49pm
JakeGould:

ARGH! “I get olde timey people…”
  9:51pm
andrewb:

The fact that the ramones couldn't get a second of radio or mtv play still makes the cars kind of hard to listen to.Not sure why I'm comparing the two
  9:51pm
JakeGould:

Also, I should have gotten credit for recognizing someone in the cars who wasn’t Ric Ocasek or Benjamin Orr. :/
  9:52pm
?:

Wait what? keep thinking "Is this Cars song really that long?" I just psyched myself out thinking "What if Even is lying on the floor in the studio unable to move or respond.. And the Cars keep playing all night?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
efd:

@Jake you totally should have!

This is the part of the movie where Phoebe Cates gets water stuck in her ear, right?

The Cars were so f#^%&$#^$%#^in' good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
efd:

@andrewb ultimately though the Ramones cast the longer shadow, I think?
  9:53pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

I found Candy O to be a far better record, and saw them on that tour. It was the vocals that sunk em live, making Roy Thomas an odd selection due to his emphasis on multitracking vocals.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I was standing in line at the Best Buy in Poughkeepsie years ago and I'm certain I saw Ric Ocasek there with his son. I didn't approach him or anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
efd:

Back in the day my friend Tim saw Ric Ocasek checking in to a hotel. He reported the conversation as follows:

Tim: Ric Ocasek! What are you doing here?
R.O.: I'm checking in to a hotel.

Reading up on Natalya Medvedeva the cover model for “The Cars” first album: “At the age of 17, Medvedeva moved to Los Angeles where she found work as a model, posing for Playboy and for the cover of The Cars' self-titled debut album in 1978, photographed by Elliot Gilbert. In 1982, Medvedeva moved to Paris and became a piano bar singer. She wrote poetry, essays for French magazines, and published two novels in 1985 and 1987.”

Good evening Folks.
  10:05pm
G:

The Cars' style was such an interesting mix of new wave with simplified elements from prog (note the synth lines), which kind of met on a common ground that was power poppy. You wouldn't think new wave and prog were exactly a good mix, but the way they did it it worked great.

You're all going to yell at me, but I've never seen Fast Times At Ridgemont High all the way through. Which I'm glad of in a way since when I hear "Moving In Stereo" I don't have that immediate association!
