Don't forget Scelsi hated to be photographed and preferred his name to be a Zen-like circle (predating even Prince's pictograph.)

Rev, you are now obligated to compose a serialist disco piece. Have on Ken's desk by Labor Day!

I love Scelci's music and have read a fair amount about him. Would like to know the title & author of the article you mentioned and if it is available on line,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm

if serialism is outlawed, only outlaws will have serials
Avatar 3:45pm

Can someone give me a 10-word-or-less definition of 'serial music'? Otherwise I shall head off to Wikipedia and that's just wrong.

Would that make Nicolas Ruwet an attempted serial (composition) killer?

/yes, I'm getting rather obscure here....
Avatar 3:50pm
northguineahills:

(Maybe Cage would have been a better well known anti-serialist)
Avatar 👻 3:52pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

It's all Schoenberg's fault, I think. The 12-tone technique, basically composing by algorithm & arbitrary numeric rules. I think it was the fad of the moment there, even Stravinsky dabbled in it & promptly washed his hands & got back to work...... or something.
Avatar 👻 3:52pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

also: that Scelsi was the bee's god-damned KNEES.
Avatar 3:53pm
Chris from DC:

Lost in Discogs. Do you have a label or any other info for that Scelsi record? Amazing stuff.
Avatar 3:54pm
northguineahills:

TBH, I love Schoenberg's work.

@Chris: I have a lot of his stuff, But I'd have to check when I get home. I blindly snatch Scelsi recs/discs and have never been disappointed.
Avatar 3:58pm
Chris from DC:

NGH, I would probably just pick them up unheard too based on that, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't know AT ALL but always guessed that "serial music" was formulaic ...but not formulaic as red hot chilli peppers, or Taylor Swift or whatever; but more like some Stockhausen or occasionally Miles Davis.
am i way off?
(& i like the Schoenberg i've heard as well)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Rich in Bay Ridge:

It's impossible to tell if this is really a test.
Avatar 4:03pm
northguineahills:

@coel: if formulaic means 12-toned algorithmic composition techniques, then yes!
Avatar 👻 4:04pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

yerps. I've got a few Schoenbergs that are pretty hip. I think it was just a technique that caught fire & got a bit over-used. Sounds like lots of composers got into it, felt they hit a wall & said, screw this, bruh, I'm going with tone-clusters...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
diciassette:

I'll bet if they put the emergency alert test on the playlist someone would clicky-star it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Rich in Bay Ridge:

Good point @diciassette
  4:05pm
Berndo411:

I agree, if they just didn't notify the public that it was a test people would like it as a song.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
coelacanth∅:

ngh (@4.03) yeah i guess that's the thing i'd heard about it that gave me the idea of formulaic. but "serial" music doesn't HAVE to be 12-toned algorhythmic, does it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
The Oscar:

Been busy working, but I wanted to chime in to say that Rasputin the Mad Monk is SO GREAT. The whole thing is just Christopher Lee in a fake beard drinking and yelling and punching people and having sex. Quite possibly my favorite performance of his.

One composer who knew Scelsi, Dary John Mizelle, has opined that Scelsi’s illness was brought on by the composing of too much serial music

My mother would use the double-wide to cart my younger twin brothers when shopping etc (in the burbs), but when we went on vacation or to amusement parks, it was two individual strollers, or the back-to-back one since space may be at a premium.
