“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit — all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided.”

Avatar 10:45am JakeGould:

Now here is a question… Does anyone here remember hearing O.V. Wright’s “Nickel and a Nail” in a movie soundtrack? Like something from the 1980s? Somehow that song got stuck in my head this weekend and I am baffled why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Hughie Considine:

Here's one from the Golden Age of the story-song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am steveo:

I'm remembering a Chevy Vega. With 8-track, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Hughie Considine:

Helen Reddy hated that "Leave Me Alone" song and didn't want to sing it, but she acquiesced and wept on her way to the bank.
Avatar 10:47am Joe McG:

@hughie: To get you all in the mood for Matt's Story Corner today. @tadpoles: No, never came across any! I mean, for $2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Krys O.:

This song always creeped me out back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am jillydg:

Anyone remember her singing it on Carol Burnett with a thought bubble and Carol dancing within? I have tried to find it but cannot. Perhaps I am living in a world of make-believe?
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

@Krys: It creeps me out now! :)
  10:49am rw:

Wow. This song never creeped me out back then because I guess I never really listened to the lyrics. It creeps me out a little now though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Hughie Considine:

I remember the creepy video ... or maybe it was the Carol Burnett performance. Definitely stuck with me, but the song doesn't have the creep factor without the visuals, is what found.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Guido from Cologne:

I have this Manfred Mann single.
The most psychedelic from them.
I was quite surprised when I found it.
Avatar 10:50am JakeGould:

I really miss the Carol Burnett show, but man Vikki Lawrence and that Mama character that spawned “Mama’s Family?” That show creeps me out. What era is that supposed to be?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Hughie Considine:

@Guido, "Up the Junction" is pretty psychedelic Mann too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am jillydg:

Yes, the though bubble seemed to play to the creep factor...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeezy:

Wow, is that the A-side of Manfred Mann?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Hughie Considine:

Jake, it was a funny take on Jim-Crow era life?
Avatar 10:52am northguineahills:

@jake: I liked but I was a really young kid and only saw it in syndication, so, I missed most of the humor and points.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Guido from Cologne:

Still arranged by Burt bacharach?
Avatar 10:52am JakeGould:

@HughieConsidine: I guess you are right, but have you ever attempted to watch that nowadays? Holy crap is that disconcerting.
Avatar 10:52am Joe McG:

@Jeezy: No, it's the B of "So Long Dad." @Guido: Yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Hughie Considine:

This song makes me realize how genius the Lili Von Shtupp bit was in Young Frankenstein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Hughie Considine:

@Jake, I haven't seen it in decades, but I imagine it has aged about as well as Ms. Lawrence's hits from the '70s.

"The Who had 10 minutes left to fill on the LP. Kit Lambert, The Who's manager, suggested to Pete Townshend that he write "something linear... perhaps a 10 minute song." Townshend responded by saying that rock songs are '2:50 by tradition!' Lambert then told Townshend that he should write a 10-minute story comprised of 2:50 songs." [from the internet]
