"Should the peasants wail and vent
And ask him where the money went
He'll simply say, it's all been spent
On being classy"

how timely
  12:26pm Tamar:

I was outside on the deck as we came near the Statue of Liberty. A lot of people had been talking the whole time, which was annoying, but when we got close, there was a hush that matched the music you were creating down below. I'm sure everyone was thinking about the contrast between the meaning of the statue and Emma Lazarus's words (added later, but still way before any of us were born) and the current dreadful treatment our government has been inflicting on asylum seekers and other migrants of various levels of documentation.
  12:27pm Dan:

Thank you, baba
Avatar 12:29pm northguineahills:

I don't think I've heard anything from Todd Rundgren that he's done since the early 80s....
  12:29pm Jeff Conklin:

Loving the tunes.

How about a US Blues for the holiday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Yvang:

This is a really great set, Ira.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Tommy in Neversink:

Not enough DBT and Van Morrison albums from the 70s on FMU .Thank you for beginning to rectify that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Stevel:

Request or just an FYI: Lee Baines and the Gloryfires, strong southern band with a progressive voice. They've been played on Joe B's show more than a few times.
Avatar 12:36pm northguineahills:

I've heard the DBTs before, but this is the first song of theirs that clicked w/ me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Stevel:

Lee Bains III

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Tommy in Neversink:

It may be actionable information
  12:37pm judy from croton:

Good song. Thanks. I’ll spread it around.
Avatar 12:39pm northguineahills:

My afterwork dive bar near my office is full of progressive rednecks (and LBTGQ rednecks) that are much older then I. And it's weird as they play 90s-2000s indie rock....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Stevel:

"You ain't no good old boy" Gloryfires winding it up (Listen later, of course)

Avatar 12:40pm northguineahills:

Avatar 12:59pm northguineahills:

Tim Heidecker, new to me and digdug!

Yep, heard and loved this Swamp Dogg forever!
Avatar 1:07pm geezerette:

When you think about it, this holiday is for celebrating a war fought against a tea tariff.

I salute the tunes though!
Avatar 1:09pm northguineahills:

@geezerette: and then when instantly implemented a whisky tax!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Michael 98145:

i do believe our founding parents consumed an enormous amount of whiskey.
Avatar 1:21pm geezerette:

Also beer! All day long!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm chris:

that is fact. nearly a gallon a day per adult on average in late 1800s new york. signs all over read, "0 days without a workplace injury," i'm sure.
Avatar 1:25pm northguineahills:

I need a "0 days w/o injury" as it seems to be true almost every day.... (for someone that is well coordinated, I'm also very clumsy, go figure).

  1:34pm JakeGould:

@Tamar: The irony of the Statue of Liberty is—if I recall correctly—nobody wanted it when Bartholdi first proposed it. Ditto with that Wall Street bull. Then suddenly, “Wow these things are great!!!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Mike Sin:

***Sounds like the 91.1 FM broadcast signal is down***
Avatar 1:34pm northguineahills:

Yeah, the Puritan church services on Sundays would easily go 6 hours during the 17th-18th centuries. Then again, most people were happy just not be working....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Michael 98145:

great show, Ira
Avatar 1:34pm northguineahills:

what Jake said.....
  1:36pm JakeGould:

Also, I don’t want people to get too upset, but did everyone see the New York Times article on Denmarks “ghettos?” It’s jaw dropping. Not to belittle what we in the U.S. are dealing with, but globally this kind of lunkheaded hate seems to be flourishing.

’Starting at the age of 1, “ghetto children” must be separated from their families for at least 25 hours a week, not including nap time, for mandatory instruction in “Danish values,” including the traditions of Christmas and Easter, and Danish language. Noncompliance could result in a stoppage of welfare payments.’

Avatar 1:36pm geezerette:

Jake, true!
Avatar 1:36pm Snortley:

91.1 is dead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Carmichael:

Heya Ira, and thanks for the Todd. I saw the video for it when I saw his show last year.
Avatar 1:37pm geezerette:

Jake, I was so happy to see Croatia beat Denmark!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Michael 98145:

... but sad to see Mexico score no goals today
  1:39pm yippie:

ghetto is a yiddish word
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm WO Town Wick:

geezerette, not be a downer or contrarian, but I hope Croatia isn't your idea of tolerance.
But also happy to see their team advance. I do heart Luka Modric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Michael 98145:

i suspect the last hope for tolerance is Canada.
but i could be wrong.
  1:43pm cee dubbles:

A-a-annnd we're Back, Baby♪♪
  1:45pm JakeGould:

It’s the same with all kinds of immigrants…

• “You Italians, who needs you… Oh wait! Pizza! Thanks!”
• “Germans? Get outta here… Oh wait! Hamburgers! Thanks!”

The second you can come up with some food or entertainment for the population that you are now a part of they leave you alone.
Avatar 1:45pm geezerette:

Michael, didn't know that. Darn!

WO TW: Of course not! I was happy for the team, not the entire country and its history. Did you see the game?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Michael 98145:

Speaking of Canada Day, who'd go for some DOA, 54-40, Cubs or Pointed Sticks right now? :)
  1:47pm listener monica:

one of my favorite songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Michael 98145:

what monica just said
  1:49pm JakeGould:

Hey folks… Changing the topic, but does anyone here know—or have an inkling—as to what euphemism is meant by blues and R&B singers making reference to big or small feet… Like feets being too big?
Avatar 1:49pm Snortley:

91.1 is back.
Avatar 1:50pm geezerette:

Jake, that's so funny and true. Every time there's a new "wave" of immigrants we know there's a new taste treat and food truck just around the corner.
Avatar 1:50pm northguineahills:

@Jake: Forced to learn Danish, the horror. First you learn Swedish, then drink a liter of vodka, fill your mouth full of marbles, and woila, you can now speak Danish (so my Swedish friends tell me).

@Jake: Feet references how the bible references feet (genitalia, it's an ancient Hebrew thing, apparently).
Avatar 1:51pm northguineahills:

off to lunch, hear ya soon, Ira!
Avatar 1:51pm geezerette:

...about the "feets", nope, equally mystified.
  1:52pm JakeGould:

@geezerette: Yeah, and then when the neighborhood is about to get gentrified the food is derided. Grr… Stupid diners with burgers… Grrr… Stupid pizza places are all fronts…

@NGH What about the part about forcing non-Christian kids to “learn” about the importance of Christmas and Easter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Michael 98145:

that's why i love being here :)
  1:53pm flashbazbo:

In earlier times when someone mentioned "Feet" in a song it was to do with the size of the persons nose. If they mention "Nose" in a song it's about the persons feet.
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

Denmark is known to be much more conservative then the other Nordic countries. It doesn't surprise me, but that is insane....

Avatar 1:57pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Michael 98145:

  1:57pm JakeGould:

Well, then Fats Waller should shut up about a woman’s big feet then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Carmichael:

Or an eppelskeever [sp]
  1:58pm JakeGould:

Isn’t referring to the size of someone’s nose kinda border-lining on anti-Semitism?

Also, it’s blueberry season. Yay! I want blueberries.
Avatar 1:59pm geezerette:

it's a lame excuse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Michael 98145:

Yeah, blueberries.
  2:02pm David:

I've got a spare RR Jerk Cassette, Ira, it's yours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Krys O.:

@Jake: Some old blues songs made reference to a woman's big legs as an appealing sexual trait. Big=abundance=sexually liberated
  2:04pm JakeGould:

@Krys: Yeah, but “big” as in wide or “big” as in long?
  2:04pm JakeGould:

99 cents a pint for delicious blueberries. This time of year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Krys O.:

Big as in R. Crumb big.
  2:05pm yippie:

the biblical reference is for the thigh not the foot. but the thigh is used probably because its close to the genital area
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Krys O.:

There's also the opposite reaction: Skinny legs and all.
Avatar 2:05pm geezerette:

& how about Mr. 5x5?
  2:05pm JakeGould:

Pints of cherries. Quarts of blueberries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Booz:

"R. Crumb big" is beeeg.
  2:06pm JakeGould:

I hate peaches and nectarines.
  2:07pm yippie:

when it comes to blueberries you can either go for the highbush or the lowbush
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Michael 98145:

sorry to hear that, @JG. Navajo country has some of the best peaches in the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Krys O.:

@Jake: Back in the early 20th century, corpulence was attractive as it indicated luxury and wealth. The poorer folks couldn't afford excessive food and drink.
  2:08pm cee dubbles:

guess what posture is easily assumed by a "round heeled woman?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Michael 98145:

now the poor folks cannot afford fitbits.

@yippie: depends on the translation. The King James version uses feet, as do most English Protestant translations (even mentioning most parts of the body was seen as sinful, see the Appalachian pronunciation of chimney as chimblee (b/c it was seen as unclean to pronounce the knee in chimney.)
