Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from July 13, 2018 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Uncle.

I think that using two hands on the tennis racket to hit shots is cheating and lacks style.

Two hands on a racket when draining pasta is acceptable.

Dear USA, thank you for sending us your most recent president. Unfortunately it is malfunctioning in many ways and appears to be dangerous, so we are returning it.

Good enough for me. Hello, UM, UM-ers, the hinky, the dinky, those who make no distinction, and those who(m) do.

Hey Sem 'n Stanley.
New chicken coop and run arrived yesterday. Trouble is I just got a case of Mallet finger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Sem:

Have you tried turning him off, then turning him back on again, Britain?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Uncle Michael:

Whack him on the side.

I'd hold out for gold finger, t'were I you, BiUK.

Lucky chickens, one more day of freedom.

Uncle, got a one day chainsaw course, a week tomorrow. Then the action starts!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm

I love quality time with my chainsaw...but I try to do it in the spring before the heat sets in. Sometimes one has no choice.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
listener james from westwood:

@Brian in UK: I had a good primer on various musical/style cultures back in college that detailed that period of UK history. IIRC one of the crucial early years, maybe even '77, there was, as there is now, a ridiculous heat wave.

Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm

@james '76 was the hottest year since forever over here. The quality of the POP music was wonderfully raw. Seventies credibility has improved over time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
listener james from westwood:

That was it, '76. Now I recall! And Hinky Dinky Time is one of the places I go to hear those many great bits of the Seventies that I missed at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
doctorjazz:

I think the Beatles overexposure has let up some... My 20 year old daughter and her boyfriend have some mixed into their punk-pop playlists on Spotify.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
listener james from westwood:

The book was Dick Hebdidge, "Subculture: The Meaning of Style." May have come in for criticism since it's late-80s release. Very scholarly but I'd never heard of Teds, mods, rockers, and the like before reading it for college.
Avatar 12:49pm
βrian:

I recall that heat wave. The girl next door travelled to Britain and it was all she could talk about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
doctorjazz:

The original! Tommy James! (liked the dance remake as well)
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Brian in UK:

@james so much of the angst in post war UK was reflected in the yoof culture, ie Teddy Boys, Mods and Rockers. The new age was approaching, no more rationing and grey days.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Brian in UK:

On reflection 1968 was my pivotal year. Started Saturday job, first gig, abroad for the first time. First motorcycle, John Peel show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
doctorjazz:

Like this Washboard band... This was a bit late for that sound, (unless it was reissued), most of that was 10-15 years earlier. Cool. Ike is cool too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
Uncle Michael:

I don't think it was a reissue. I think it comes from this odd transition between trad and skiffle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
doctorjazz:

Ah, it's British, that explains the time lag... They picked up on Muddy Waters and the rest 10-20 years after the originals were cut (of course, they made it mainstream, instead of "race records")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
doctorjazz:

So, that's a big issue these days and .. Was that "cultural appropriation " or healthy mixing and hybridization of styles. Was it white rap, or rockabilly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
doctorjazz:

Speaking of interesting mixes, Jeff G once linked to a great Sun Ra does Gershwin album, I think it was on Bandcamp.
