Scott in Tokyo:

Is that Fripp guitar?
Avatar 4:45am
BronwynB:

@scraps: the funny thing about the mcgarrigles and roches is that besides both being singing sister groups, they each had a member who had at least one baby with loudon wainwright
Avatar 4:45am
BronwynB:

i told my mom this and she was like "didn't everyone have a baby with loudon wainwright"
Avatar 4:45am
BronwynB:

@scott: it is!

Avatar 4:53am
Billy Jam:

this melody reminds me of "Whiskey In THe Jar" slowed down and switched up a bit
Avatar 4:54am
BronwynB:

it might be- phil had a habit of borrowing older melodies. the folk tradition ;)
Avatar 4:57am
Scraps.:

Another Richard Thompson...
Avatar 4:58am
Howard F:

Good morning!
Avatar 4:59am
BronwynB:

yes! i played a richard thompson song and then this for a friend who was unfamiliar with any of it and he went "hey that's the same guitar player!"
Avatar 5:00am
BronwynB:

morning howard :)
Avatar 5:01am
Scraps.:

I kinda dislike Matty Groves now.... mostly because I’ve heard it so many times, and it’s a generic bad-woman-killed thing.
Avatar 5:04am
BronwynB:

good point about the seemingly woman-shaming nature of the story...i think fairport's version at least tries to make matty & lady darnell the heroes though. this one definitely doesn't have as good a story as the other well-known fairport folk song interpretation, tam lin, which has one of the best female protagonists in all of folklore, but it has a way better melody so they balance each other out...
Avatar 5:05am
BronwynB:

as you can see i have many opinions about fairport convention versions of old folk songs
Avatar 5:05am
Scraps.:

Yep, Tam Lin and Matty Groves are lonnnnnng.... ;-)
