Stanley thanks but i like them naked!
...and baklava! this just reminds me of the greek restaurant that used to be in my town - had exquisite baklava. never had any since that compares.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Stanley:

Halva comes in many forms. It was a jelly like sweet in Northern Kenya
Avatar 4:21pm

One of each, please. Now I have work to do, may pop up to stretch my legs now & then.

Hello David and food obsessed listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
doctorjazz:

I'm up for some baklava if there's any extra (but I'm fussy with it ,love it when it's good, but sometimes doesn't hit the spot).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
David D:

βrian, that sounds good to me just about now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Stanley:

HI Brian. Have you had yer tea?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
David D:

And hello Brian with a B and a UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
coelacanth∅:

my introduction to halvah was at a store i worked in. it was sweetened only with honey and we had regular and carob swirled, and we sold it by weight, cut off 6# blocks. unbelievable! then it stopped being available and i have never tried halvah since then (in 20+ years) that i've liked. (& never seen it without refined sugar either)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
coelacanth∅:

...what is "hallwa"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Brian in UK:

Stanley or is that Hamish?, I can thoroughly recommend this establishment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm

coelacanth∅: I think it might actually be another spelling of halva - could be a turn of phrase?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
Stanley:

Thanks Al-Brian, they look amazing. I'll call next time I cross the Bosphorus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm

Grew up with halva in the house, my Polish immigrant parents loved it. I didn't get a taste for it until I was an adult, like it now (though I don't seek it out).

I ssw them perform it live. Great stuff (Passover music)

Yes, but good all year round, I'd say. And sure, why not head to Monty Hall, there are bound to be unusual partners in crime around...

Asked for extra jalapenos w/ my burrito, and used my habenero hot sauce, but still seemed tame after eating my newly ripened ghost peppers this weekend. Still a good burrito!

I always thought Gaslamp Killer leaned more towards grime w/ no problem going jazzy...Hadn't heard that track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
David D:

Ghost peppers - yikes! Is it at all palatable?
Avatar 5:08pm
northguineahills:

@David: Yes, you just have to build your tolerance. I started w/ 3mm strips and now I've worked up to 1cm strips (usually wrapped in cheese). They have an amazing flavor if you can get past the heat (especially freshly picked). Also been taking butternut squash blossoms from my garden and putting them in my salad.
Avatar 5:09pm

(keep in mind I've been cooking w/ habaneros for years).(I started building my ghost pepper tolerance last week).

Avatar 6:21pm

Birds and squirrels go for the peppers....more than once?
Avatar 6:27pm
northguineahills:

Birds can't detect capsaicin. (but most of my plants were eaten by the animals before they fruited, tomatoes and tomatillos notwithstanding). In NYC, on my fire escape, squirrels used to take a bit out of jalapenos/habaneros and realized they weren't tastey fruit. Still, I would find buried peppers in my plant boxes. I finally caught them in time and threw my cup of ice water on them and they never came back.
Avatar 6:28pm
northguineahills:

I want to plant fruit trees, but I'm renting for the time being, and you have to be patient w/ trees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm

Maybe I can put out some hot stuff for the raccoons here.
Avatar 6:36pm

Extreme hot sauce is good rodent repellent. When we had a mice problem in Brooklyn, in addition to having steel wool and caulk over every potential hole, I put ghost pepper paste around it....

I sprinkled cayenne powder along a deck rail and in plant pots a few years back as a line of defense against squirrels. Didn't even know if critters have any physical reaction or if the method achieved anything. Obviously one medium rain would cancel the application. Should make a hot powder mandala...just to practice being consciously OK with its erasure by elements.
