Cool. Morning Bob and friends.
  9:05am 1whoknewcthulhu:

Any day that begins with Horace Silver's "Song for My Father" (a clear influence on Steley Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number") is going to be a good day.
  9:06am Doc Rock:

Good Morning Bob & Listeners. Hey Jeff!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Ken From Hyde Park:

Huh, I thought this was going to be "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," but this preceded that by ten years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am melinda:

@Ken I knew it sounded familiar but couldn't place it.
  9:10am dan:

Now you drop the other shoe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

Oh, I was just early. Heh.

Bob's funnin' us all!
Avatar 9:12am TDK60:

Was in a reggae/ska/calypso band once in which the steel pan player had us do a version of Silver's "Father."
  9:16am 1whoknewcthulhu:

Hey, Bob--can you do 2 hours of cuts that all riff on that same bass line?
  9:16am Fragonard:

Great set! My mind went to Steely Dan and you read it (my mind, that is)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am fred:

Wasn't that Mulatu Astatke track Jason Elbogen's bed music?
  9:19am dan:

What is this: Zydeco Ska?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Ken From Hyde Park:

I believe you're correct, fred. Good catch.
Avatar 9:20am TDK60:

Saw Mulatu Astatke in Central Park a year or so ago. ('16? '17? my brain) Great.

I'm gonna say that's Rick Danko and The Band. Can't ID it for sure, though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:17am WilliamfromDumont:

Is it the only song from the movie not on the soundtrack? Maybe it's an "in-house" kinda thing.
  10:17am Frankenstein:

Nnnggaaarrrrr, btw.
  10:18am Kramrellim:

I agree with the Flaming Lips guess, but I don't know the song title.

If you'll look up Flaming Lips, check out anything from their "Soft Bulletin" album ('99) thru later stuff; albums before that: '80s-'90s noisier neo-psych-punk. Later stuff more oddball synth pop, maybe.
  10:55am Dean:

Shoot, missed the mystery song. Duck Baker has a nice tribute album to Nichols.
  10:56am dan:

Bob, for the future, can you play Oscar Peterson on your show? He's become a favorite of mine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Joe C from Brooklyn In Staten Island:

Love listening to your show Bob. Just thought you should know.
  3:25pm King Koncrete ("Cement Mixer"):

The mystery of your "Nobody can hold me down, I'm turning this heart around" song in the film "Observe and Report" was answered by Seth Rogen on Twitter, writing it was Joey Santago's insertion:

https://twitter.com/sethrogen/status/616122278040866816
  12:08pm not satisfied:

Replying to, "What was the song in your TV commercial?," a company once sent me a cassette of but a 30-second duration non-song their ad agency produced.
"Nobody can hold me down, I'm turning this heart around," seems to be all there is, too - there is no song.

Seth Rogen's tweet leaves the question, why isn't Pixies' guitarist Joey Santiago, indeed a composer for films according to sources, listed in this film's credits? The credits rather include an Edwardo/Eduardo Santiago who bears some resemblance to Joey, and is often photographed holding a boom mike. To my ear, Joey Santiago doesn't sound like the singer, though the Pixies' vocalist's voice is a possibility . . .
  6:10pm Observing and Reporting:

Fake songs!

Replying on Reddit to Rabbitstew's posing the same "Impossible song to find from 'Observe and Report'" question, Deleted pointed to an online interview with Joseph Stephens, the actual music composer listed in the film's credits:

"There are also a couple 'fake songs' in the film, songs that I wrote and performed exclusively for the film but are meant to sound like pre-existing material from some other artist who licensed the music for use in the film in the same manner that Patto, The Yardbirds, and The Band licensed their music. There is also the cover of the [Pixies'] song 'Where Is My Mind?' which was performed by one of my bands, City Wolf. As well, as the end credit song 'Babyteeth' by my main band Pyramid. With me singing 'fake songs,' cover songs, and an original song, using the same drummer, recorded at the same studio as the score, it was easy to blend into the other licensed commercial songs throughout the film."

https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/comments/jzi23/tomt_music_impossible_song_to_find_from_observe
  10:05pm Observing and Reporting:

Seth Rogen tweeted "Joey Santiago" when he must have meant "Joey Stephens." An honest mix-up, being Santiago also scores films. And holds a boom mike.
9:00am Joey Stephens, not Joey Santiago:

Seth Rogen is quoted correctly identifying the "Observe and Report" boom microphone operator and music composer in this Yahoo! Answers "Who is the band City Wolf" forum:

https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090412210902AAoXhRa
  9:26am Observing and Reporting:

It follows that your fake songster Joey Stephens' bands are fake, too. Gives the soundtrack more aura.
Avatar 8:27pm Bob Brainen:

Thanks to everyone who commented and e-mailed re: my question on the 1st piece of set #3. It looks like the composer Joey Stephens wrote this song snippet, and that may be all there is of the "song." I assume he's the singer too but whoever it is he's got one hell of a voice. Kudos.
