hi David and all
- the Butch Morris piece is contemplative in a very different way than the malawi mouse boys piece is! went from cruising comfortably but tentatively in 4th gear at a relaxed speed to gunning it in 2nd gear.
how's that?!

Hello Fred and james, my pleasure always. And yes, djazz, this one is semi-aimed at you.

I think Hyperion Ensemble is worth seeing, if it's still a thing. Ana-Maria Avram is no longer with us but I hope Iancu Dimitrescu keeps it going

Nice coel. I usually like the shock, but that little Butch moment is kind of sublime but I'll make up for this later in the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
david w:

@Fred... I just peeked at the Hyperion site and they seem busy and touring. And I agree they would fit in here and have done fine work.

and speaking of equal temperaments being overrated (which we were a long time ago!) i still now & then pop in a cassette i recorded from the radio (wfmu) early '80s, the set containing 2 oh-ok songs, run dmc, jan kawalski, a classic spanish song i'd love to identify some day, bing crosby doing "swing on a star", i don't remember what else, but ending up with the slits' version of heard it through the grapevine. somehow it worked! so i didn't bat any eyelashes for the first segue today!
(just thought i might've been misunderstood with my "don't taste great together" comment)

Ellingtonian for sure.

All cool coel. Shotgun matchings that blew my mind on WFMU decades ago are burned into my memory too. Basically gave me the courage to do this show all these years later.

Looking forward to that set with Cecil Taylor. Too bad he wasn't conducting, though I guess that could lead to a "Sweet Lou" moment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
northguineahills:

@fed:, but I was tempted when I saw it on the menu at the restaurant I went to yesterday (I've had it before). I should get some at a butcher and grill it w/ peppers.

ngh you still tawkin about bagels?! damn i want a lox bagel. i'm trapped where i am until around 8.

and ditto on the angel/andel. thanks for the introductions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm

Ruth disapproves of my grand proclamations, so I'll just say the Jazz Composer's Orchestra 1968 album set something big in motion.

Mmm send me a lox bagel for my show next, I haven't had time to eat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
fred:

Speaking of "Sweet Lou" moments, a few months after I started working at Ircam, Boulez ejected a percussionist who hadn't opened the score beforehand and fumbled something. The whole orchestra (Ensemble Inter-Contemporain) went on strike, leaving the rehearsal place and gathering right next to my office. That was weird. Boulez was unfailingly nice to people like janitors, students or poorly paid postdocs, and demanding with bosses and leaders. I liked that about him

Becoming a space cadet... Searched for the albumon Discogs, found it, then for the heck of it checked an old, out of date album database I put together years back, and I HAVE it. Sheeesh!

I only got to see Cecil Taylor once, in 2011. He was supposed to play with Amiri Baraka, but they had an argument before the show and performed separately. Both were great, I wish I could have seen them together
