Both ghostly and lush, the improvisational music of Kevin Kastning and Mark Wingfield conjures up alien landscapes, dark skies, snowy fields on the edge of other worlds. After six albums together, Kevin and Mark seem to complete each other's musical thoughts. New England guitar conceptualist and Greydisc label founder Kastning debuts his new 18-string classical guitar on this show and makes good use of the studio piano. Kevin says of the Contraguitars he's had created for his music, his "primary instruments have become the 16- and 17-string Contraguitars. They've been my first-choice instruments on several albums. The vast range and registers, the tonal flexibility, and the seemingly endless ranges of expression available on it make me never want to put it down." Wingfield loads up his electric guitar with a computer full of soaring effects. As well as composing music for his own albums, Mark also composes music for classical musicians. Mark recently composed a solo piano piece for pianist Kathryn Stott, known for her many collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma but also as a premier concert pianist with orchestras around the world. Kevin Kastning and Mark Wingfield returned to Irene's show with a live improvised set for WFMU.

Glad you're loving this! Kevin and Mark take me to unusual places. There are several links to other performances they've done for my show. Mark was also on a year or so ago with Markus Reuter. Rev. Rabbit, funny you should mention Pat Metheny. Kevin studied with him many years ago. He's definitely taken it into his own direction.
