Good dog, sit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am Doug Schulkind:

Funny you should say. I am in a sleepless haze having been up most the night with a dog having a panic attack. Just the slightest change in barometric pressure gives her the going-out-of-my-mind-over-a-coming-thunderstorm blues.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:15am Brian in UK:

Should be a great show then. No, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am Doug Schulkind:

Really really.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:19am Brian in UK:

Well, sort of, kind of, like.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:37am doctorjazz:

My last dog had major anxiety issues. They started 1 year during the 4th if July firecracker assault on the ears; every time it thundered or any other loud noise sent her unde the bed, and I couldn't get her to go out for days unless I carried her down the steps from my 3rd floor Park Slope walk up apartment (it was no fun).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am coelacanth∅:

i have a recording of Jelly Roll talking about how he did these songs because he played piano and he might be considered foofy. (his actual words were that he "didn't want the feminine thing on so ... started making the songs kinda smutty")

Vortex was distributed by Atlantic, but who owned the label?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Vortex was an Atlantic subsidiary, no, Mr C?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33am dutchtheo:

it sounded like two; I got my informaation from AllMusic;"You Know How We Do," recorded by a pianoless septet with Roswell Rudd on trombone, percussionist Archie Lee, and second bassist Lewis Worrell. The stark, gospel-style head (also deeply influenced by Coleman), where it exists at all, is supplanted by the dual bass fury and a solidly rhythmic attack -- even the solo phrasings on the brass and saxophone underscore this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

My man Joel Dorn produced a number of the Vortex releases (including the Robin Kenyatta we just heard), but not this Chick Corea effort. The producer of this record?....

Herbie Mann
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Herbie Mann's son Geoff once played live on my show, leading the Eternal Buzz Brass Band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
You may just be right. The info I had didn't list Roswell Rudd on the track I played, but I clearly heard him. So...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Little Danny:

Mornin' Doug, mornin' all
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:45am Sam Segal:

I once played this Byard Lancaster record on my college radio show at the University of Minnesota. Got a call on the studio line, picked up the phone, and heard in a thick southern accent, "Is this Byard Lancaster?!" I told the gentleman that it was indeed. He said, "Wow, I studied under Byard Lancaster in the '70s." The guy on the phone turned out to be George Cartwright, saxophonist from the great Downtown NYC act Curlew. Ended up having him on my show several times after that, all triggered by that amazing Byard Lancaster album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Jeff Golick:

Wow great story and experience, @Sam!

Also: MILFORD GRAVES.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

"My Back Pages" appeared on Keith Jarrett's Vortex LP Somewhere Before. But I'm not sure Lay Lady Lay every appeared on LP.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Aretha had two children (or soon would have) at the time of this recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am coelacanth∅:

i guess she yielded to temptation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Jeff Golick:

I enjoyed this little anecdote: "Etta James once recalled listening to Franklin’s version of Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael’s standard “Skylark.” In the second verse, Franklin jumps an octave. “I had to scratch my head and ask myself, How the fuck did that bitch do that? I remember running into Sarah Vaughan, who always intimidated me. Sarah said, ‘Have you heard of this Aretha Franklin girl?’ I said, ‘You heard her do ‘Skylark,’ didn’t you?’ Sarah said, ‘Yes, I did, and I’m never singing that song again.’ ”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Spirit in the Dark, an Aretha composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Duane Allman on guitar, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
That anecdote stood out to me, too.
  11:12am Dean:

Last Friday Doug played a track (twice!) from a 2005 compilation of early '50s gospel music out of Texas. On that day I ordered the comp from Amoeba, along with Aretha's Amazing Grace. The next day we learned that Aretha's health was declining precipitously. The Texas comp arrived yesterday. It's amazing. Still waiting on Amazing Grace, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:
