The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Big Fave!! Great Monday song!
Avatar 8:32pm

It is a perfect Monday tune, isn't it?!?!?
Avatar 8:32pm
Daffodil2:

The guitar work in all these cuts is just really, really good!
Avatar 8:34pm
bigplanetnoise:

That's so funny you say that, Daffodil, because I've been plotting out a set to do at some point in which the guitars are just dreadfully out of tune! I'm gonna call it "Where Was The Producer?!?"
  8:34pm
Jay S.:

The depth of quality from this period still amazes me
Avatar 8:35pm
bigplanetnoise:

I agree, Jay - it's endless...
Avatar 8:35pm
Daffodil2:

You know, I kind of like the out-of-tune sound... more real than the current auto-tune stuff.
Avatar 8:36pm
bigplanetnoise:

Oy. For sure. There's no place for anything close to auto-tuned in my world!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Gina Bacon:

Part of the charm is the imperfection, sometimes. Same with people. Sometimes.
Avatar 8:37pm
Daffodil2:

You don't need auto-tune, that's for sure! You're always absolutely perfect!
Avatar 8:38pm

Real music, real people. Figuring it out as it goes.

Awwww. Thx, Daffodil.

Speaking of tuning -- A-440! Perfect!
Avatar 8:39pm
bigplanetnoise:

A 440!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Gina Bacon:

Some say they named The 440 here in Nashville because of that.
Avatar 8:40pm
Mailman Tom:

I prefer my music a little rough around the edges.
Avatar 8:40pm

That's a nice story, whether its true or not!
Avatar 8:41pm

Yeah - rough edges, for sure, Mailman.

That Dr Specs record is astonishing. Hard to believe a handful of New Orleans teens cooked that one up.

Always so impressed by what Verve put out on the pop and rock side of the label.
Avatar 8:51pm

Yeah Andy - so much good stuff. And all over the map.
Avatar 8:55pm
bigplanetnoise:

How could they possibly have left this one on the shelf for decades?!?!
  8:56pm
Jay S.:

Seriously
  8:56pm
Andy R:

Wow. Also, this just informed me there is a "Complete Hollies" set I need in my life.
  🪐 8:56pm
Eargasm!:

Shows how much great material they had on their hands.
Avatar 8:57pm
bigplanetnoise:

This is a fave Hermits song. Never originally issued in this country. Weird.
  8:58pm
Andy R:

Never heard this Hermits tune before. Dig it!
  🪐 8:58pm
Eargasm!:

The 1960's were strange in the determination of records which would or would not be released in any given country.
  🪐 8:59pm
Eargasm!:

A favorite Kinks song.
Avatar 9:00pm
bigplanetnoise:

Yeah - I've seen it first-hand. In most cases, all these songs were delivered to the U.S., but it was the A&R guys HERE that made the determination as to what would come out, and what would not.
Avatar 9:00pm
bigplanetnoise:

It was willy-nilly, to say the least....
  9:00pm
Jay S.:

I guess they could only push so many releases at one time
  9:01pm
Andy R:

Crazy.
Avatar 9:01pm
bigplanetnoise:

The A&R guys weren't necessarily clued in, I think.
  9:02pm
Andy R:

Did the US labels sort of have a blanket license with the UK labels the bands were on?
Avatar 9:03pm
bigplanetnoise:

No. Labels negotiated, unless there was a pre-arranged marriage of some sort.
  🪐 9:03pm
Eargasm!:

The pace and high quality level of creativity in the 60's is unmatched in modern music.
  9:03pm
Andy R:

Love "My White Bicycle." So many of my friends in high school and I spent many hours borrowing each other's Nuggets Box Sets to hear these tracks for the first time.
Avatar 9:04pm
bigplanetnoise:

You had cool friends.
  9:04pm
Andy R:

I agree with you Eargasm, there's a reason why it's my favorite decade for music.
Avatar 9:04pm
bigplanetnoise:

My classmates were fully absorbed by the Doobies and Eagles.
  9:06pm
Andy R:

Most of the people I hung around with my junior and senior years were all obsessed with The Monkees and The Velvet Underground. Just one of those right time, right place situations. Big music fans and living in the era of having access to so much of it on CDs.
Avatar 9:06pm
bigplanetnoise:

The cool kids.
  9:07pm
Jay S.:

I was surrounded by lovers of Journey, Styx, Meat Loaf and Billy Joel. It was brutal.
Avatar 9:08pm
bigplanetnoise:

That's brutal, for sure, Jay....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Gina Bacon:

  9:13pm
Andy R:

No rhyme or reason to the sets I'm playing. Just a bunch of tunes from the '60s I love with a short trip to the '70s for a Nez tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Glynis GirlGroupGirl:

All our Hollies LP's are Canadian, believe it or not I never knew they had an LP called Butterfly!
Avatar 9:17pm
bigplanetnoise:

Those are the best shows, Andy. If you put your thinking-cap into overdrive, I think shows get predictable and boring. Play what you feel!
Avatar 9:17pm
bigplanetnoise:

How in the world did you wind up with all Canadian Hollies' LPs?!?!?!?
