A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

At every single birthday and Christmas from when I was 10 to when I was 17, one grown relative or another would pull me aside to inform me that they *almost* got me some R. Crumb thing or another, but then decided that would be inappropriate. As a result, R. Crumb became sort of a mythical figure for me growing up.
  10:42am
JakeGould:

If Robert Crumb is reading this, please give money to the station here: pledge.wfmu.org

Also, Picasso, Miro, and tons of others are better artists than Robert Crumb. His main level of fame comes from applying that level of skill to comics. Past that, I’m not the only one who doesn’t worship at his inkwell. Moebius (Jean Giraud) is amazing but nobody has made him some art diety.

JakeGould:

Sorry to sound like a snob, but at a certain point in my life I held onto the (misbegotten) idea that museums and “high art” were snotty and bad and somehow the world of hipster “comix” was more real.

Once I got past prejudices others put in my head, I realized in the great scheme of things there are tons of other artists I was never exposed to that are as good or better than “underground” crap.

And yes, there are definitely some great comic artists out there. No doubt. But I’m personally tired of the incredible self-importance of that world.

@TheOscar: What about that disco hit, “Hamburgers (For Nazis)?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am

I am right! “The number continued to rise: 5 billion in 1969, 15 billion in 1974, 30 billion in 1979, and 45 billion in 1983. After that, the company simply began adding 5 billion to the number every year, topping out at 99 billion in 1993. Back in the '90s one of the Ninja Turtles guys opened a whole museum of comic book art out in Northampton, MA, with original art going back to Jack Kirby and the like. One of my favorite high school memories was when a teacher handed me a photocopy of Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People" after class and said, "I think this will be right up your alley." She was right.

@melinda: Sad reality is J.K. Rowling’s published author name uses initials because a female name on books is perceived to not be a good thing. Sad and kinda pathetic if you think about how of all the forms of published media don’t go out of the way to mask a creator’s name… Except for the oldest form of published media.

I'm a fan of female penned indie comix, which has some of the best autobio stuff out there. Lynda Barry, Phoebe Gloeckner, Debbie Drescher, Leslie Sternbergh, Carol Lay, Julie Doucet, Mary Fleener, Krystine Kryttre, Alison Bechdel .. and that's just off the top of my head!

Wow, Groff provides a cavalcade of recommendations! One of the suggested authors, Marie-Claire Blais of Quebec, is definitely someone I should investigate further. I've only read one of her books, "Season in the Life of Emmanuel", and it was bleak as hell, my personal sweet spot.

Also, really love her reinterpretation of Jean Craighead George and "My Side of the Mountain": "Over the decades since I first found the books to be rollicking adventure stories, they’ve become chilling horror stories of lonely children lost and desperate to survive in unforgiving wilderness."

MSotM was probably my favorite book from childhood but, I suspect, something that would prove upon re-reading to be less an adventure tale than one of loneliness and alienation, which, again, is fine by me.

@WebhamsterHenry: But on the topic of “Perseolis,” there is—at least I consider—the bizarre case of Craig Thompson’s “Habibi.” A Christian American white guy writes Middle Eastern “romance” comic… And it’s praised, but I find it’s mere existence tone deaf. But few people really take it to task for that.
