Favoriting August 29, 2018: The 10th Annual Evan "Funk" Davies Show Summertime Disco/Dance Party!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Summertime always reminds me of listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS. Although, I was reminded by old friend and regular EFD D/DP listener Weems that this summer marks the 40th anniversary of Disco 92 WKTU hitting the New York City airwaves. So while I was always more of a 'BLS guy I'll see if I can summon the spirits of Paco, Rosko, and Carlos DeJesus as well.

In any case, when summer rolls around I start itching to play my favorite records from that era (give or take a few years) -- favorites I loved back then, and new favorites that I never heard back in the day.

In that spirit, I'm excited to bring you the 10th (!!) annual Evan "Funk" Davies Show Disco and/or Dance Party! It's three hours of classic dance and disco jams from the '70s and early '80s, plus some lost shoulda-been-hits that just might become your new faves. Hook up the disco ball, pull the rug back, and tell the downstairs neighbors to go out to the movies (or just invite them up!) and get ready to get up and boogie. That's right!

=======================================

Disco/dance disclaimer! I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" and "dance" as catch-all terms for my own take on fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s, expanding the boundaries (and sound) of the traditional disco era. Don't @ me!

Saw a homeless guy tonight yelling a disco lyric to a kid as he chased him around a tree. The kid was on a skateboard and the homeless guy is trying to kick his back wheels shouting, “You and your fucking skateboard! Your stupid hipster t-shirt! Where’s my money!”

I think in the right hands—as this Dr. John song proves—it can be a sleeper hit! “Your Stupid Hipster T-Shirt (Where’s My Money)”
  10:03pm
steveL:

That underline on the Dr John has a Cabaret Voltaire sound to it.

Evan, it's been something like forty years and you've just accomplished something I thought could never be done--found a Dr. John track I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm

Wow Jake, that's aggressive. Homeless dude needs to find that wifi thing you told me about on Friday and chill out to his bluetooth speaker. As for this track, I forgot that it was actually cool
  10:05pm
JakeGould:

Oh, and in 1984 a high school teacher would somehow volunteer this advice—unsolicited—to kids in the class who I think were all wearing “Journey” t-shirts from a show they went to: “I don’t like to go to shows. I like to just sit at home and listen to Dr. John and enjoy a drink or two.”

Trying to wrap my brain around the idea of a 60-year-old Michael Jackson. It's sad and scary.

Glad I didn't miss the disco show, I was about to say I havent heard a laser gun sound yet but I didnt have to wait long.
Avatar 11:03pm

Quick look at what I missed and first I notice is I still have a lot of these 12"s. But not Dr. John, Ill have to have a listen back at that. He was always kinda flamboyant in his way but never heard disco Dr. John

Ok Funk, great job as always! Much better than Sirius XM Studio 54! I’ll catch the last hour on demand. Past my bedtime, and 15 year old boys don’t wake themselves, I’ll be up at 6. Cheers!

@EFD, I gotta go, but you are one of the reasons i support WFMU. I've been a listener of you since The Afternoon Show. So, Let the Music Play. See ya.

I've heard this song before, but I didn't know the title and before I looked at the playlist, it sounded a bit to me like he was singing "shake your body like a toothbrush."

I love that this extravaganza is always focused on classics instead of obscure italo. Not that there is anything wrong with the latter at all, just that every dj I see when I go out seem to be trying to outdo themselves with that stuff. Not the spirit of this show at all.
