Feelin' fair. Feelin' hot for a September evening. But fair.

'fraid we might be heating it up a bit more in here right now, @SBP...
@Doug: Brilliant Randy Weston tribute! That last recording was new to me and a total mindblower.

At GTDR, a mind is a wonderful thing to blow.

Hahaha, SBP, it looks like the fellow to his right might be aghast at the sight of his loud outfit.

I was looking at an online shop that offers a product described as "a mix of exotic plants from the amazonian from ayahuasca, chacruna, cappi and yanawana"

By the way, this screenshot comes to us from the great labor film, "Harlan County USA."

Aghast or eyes opened with a polyester BAM! "That's it...that look is the answer!"

Royal Scam is one of the vinyl albums still in the short stack of 40+ year old records I held onto, and the playability-condition of which I sometimes wonder about. Just wonder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Sam Segal:

I just picked up my own vinyl copy this weekend. Slightly unreasonable price, but the record was in pretty great shape.

Dean:

You're talking about Steely Dan's Royal Scam? (Just tuned in.) That is the one SD LP I own, picked up for two bucks a few years ago. I harbor utter disdain for that group. I think they fucked up rock 'n' roll more than many other groups. But I have RS, mostly, for "Kid Charlemagne," which once kept me up all night, because it kept running through my head. Steely Dan is dangerous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Sam Segal:

Hahahahaha, I really appreciate your disdain for them. Please tell me more about how you think they sent rock and roll in the wrong direction!
  11:11pm
Dean:

They turned rock into resume-building. "So-and-so played on this record. Well, gosh!" At the risk of a sexism I eschew, I'll say they emasculated rock, turned it into pleasant music. But what it really boils down to is the night of endless "Kid Charlemagne." In the end, I discovered, it isn't that good a song, nor are any others of theirs. Their music is mostly just OK. That's OK, but it is no more than OK.

I've heard SD songs broadcasting while shopping at the health food store
  11:12pm
Dean:

So now we have, e.g., labels like Thrill Jockey and its ilk: utterly boring music that we somehow feel we have to admire. I don't.
  11:13pm
Dean:

QED? Maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Sam Segal:

Interesting...the line from Steely Dan to Thrill Jockey isn't clear to me, but I appreciate the perspective.

Enjoying this set
  11:23pm
Dean:

SD produced, for lack of a better word, "cerebral" rock, music with an affirmative intellectual component. I hear the same from TJ (and many, many other sources identified in, e.g., The Wire magazine, which I also dislike). SD were great musicians who, to my ear, sold out. Very little (nothing?) I've ever heard on TJ strikes me as anything more than a similar kind of musical compromise. It's all capably bland.
  11:25pm
Dean:

(Yet just now I'd love to hear "Rikki...")
  11:26pm
rw:

Evening! Been listening but just checked in here. Dean! Now we know how to get under your skin. I've never been a huge SD fan but do have an appreciation. I will say that I did break up with a girl once because Aja was her favorite album. (Okay only partly because of that but it was certainly a factor!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Thanks, Chresti. The twinkling ambient set is always a fun one to DJ.

Thanks for checking in, @RW. I recently showed my girlfriend the song "Peg," and she really hated it! So, you know she is a keeper.

(Who doesn't sing along with Dr. Wu?)
I've heard even SD band members weren't so proud of some of the early catalog after some years passed -- I don't which tracks they knocked. But the music ranges widely, some appealingly different, some dismissable, some a fun kick, some less interesting in its low-gear slickness, some permanently evocative of my teenage music listening, some lyrics with perspectives that elicit winces or wondering. Regarding most of it, I'm glad it happened. And rock and pop kept a' going for better and worse, in empty and worthwhile ways.
  11:33pm
rw:

Ha! See? It's a good gauge. Maybe we're onto something here. I have a couple friends who refer to that sort of rock-pop as music that makes you wince as you turn it up!
  11:35pm
rw:

And Sam, I'm with chresti on this and the last sets. Nice way to wind down the long weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks, @RW!
  11:49pm
Dean:

O'Rourke: a perfect example of what, to me, is a cultivated blandness. I think I don't like Chicago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Sam Segal:

Oh, dear, Dean! Jim O'Rourke is one of my absolute favorites, and the scene he was a part of in Chicago in the '90s and '00s never ceases to interest me. But, that is okay!
  11:57pm
Dean:

Don't get me entirely wrong. I *adore* Vandermark and his associates. I love Guillermo Gregorio, Pandelis Karayorgis, etc. But mostly Chicago bores me to tears. And O'Rourke is a forceful source of that response.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Franco Twinkie:

I suspect part of the visceral reaction to SD has to do with it's creators, Becker and Fagen. Two guys who presented themselves as myserioso musical pipe bomb builders. People hate sniffy ironic snobs, especially if they seem to be having fun at the expense of lower life forms, and getting well paid for it.
  12:00am
chresti:

Thanks a bunch Sam!
