Spotlight on Flushing Town Hall,
Celebrating Queens' cultural diversity
with Sami Abu Shumays

Flushing Town Hall is an urban success story. The beautiful 1862 Romanesque Revival landmark building had over time been a Civil War recruitment center, theatre (Tom Thumb was the resident celebrity for a time), courthouse and jail. But by the 1970s, Flushing Town Hall had fallen into a severe state of disrepair. It was restored in 1990 and turned into a cultural center with a mission "to present multi-disciplinary global arts that engage and educate the global communities of Queens and New York City". That includes lots of great concerts, and the fall season kicks off with a doozy: The exuberant sounds of Peruvian village brass band La Patronal, making an ultra-rare appearance on Friday September 14th.

Flushing Town Hall Deputy Director Sami Abu Shumays, who leads New York's wonderful Egyptian-movie-music-style band Zikrayat by night, joins us to tell the story and preview some upcoming season highlights.

Very reassuring that the building was restored to become such a great resource instead of getting bulldozed to put up a dollar store.

A lot of such great 1800s buildings were toppled in the early '70s to build ugly-box govt. buildings. I call it Nixonian architecture, but I digress.
