Pascal Danaë sends us a musical postcard from Paris to introduce the music of Delgres and more - ahead of Delgres' big show at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette St. (near Astor Place in lower Manhattan), Tuesday night September 25th at 9:30 pm. Delgres is on tour in the US Sept 8th through Oct 7th; tour dates here.
Delgres, who were among the bands chosen to play the coveted globalFEST showcase festival this past January, have an excellent new album out: Mo Jodi. The band's name and the album title "Mo Jodi" (I'll Die Today) honor Louis Delgrès, who died fighting Napoleon's Army in Guadeloupe in 1802. Here's an excellent review of the album from Afropop Worldwide: http://afropop.org/articles/ma-jodi and a lovely review / feature from Rootsworld: http://rootsworld.com/reviews/delgres-18.shtml.
About Delgres:
When Napoleon reinstated slavery in the Caribbean Island of Guadalupe in 1802 many people were exiled or fled, some of which went to New Orleans. It is from this perspective that Delgres, made up of Danaë, Rafgee and Baptiste Brondy, revisits the blended songs, dances and tears of the long-lost, drifting souls of New-Orleans. Delgres’ sound is soaked in blues. though urban and open to the world, and sounds somewhere between Ali Farka Toure, Tinariwen and the Black keys.
About Pascal Danaë: Guitarist and songwriter Pascal Danaë is known for his distinctive blend of Creole, West African, Rock and Delta Blues guitar styles. His parents emigrated from the Caribbean to Paris, where Pascal grew up. He has shared the stage with Harry Belafonte, Neneh et Eagle Eye Cherry, Peter Gabriel, Gilberto Gil, Laurent Voulzy, Youssou N' Dour and many more; and recorded, co-written and / or performed with Souad Massi, Yael Naïm, Pierpoljak, Orlando Morais, the Sugarbabes, Asa and Morcheeba and more.
