Avatar 9:12am Joe McG:

Mornin', all, and welcome to today's September finale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am The Oscar:

This sounds like Ken Nordine's funky cousin.
Avatar 9:14am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. Is it true that you are wizzing over to la belle France this week?
Avatar 9:15am Joe McG:

@Brian: True!

Tawdry show so far Joe, great stuff.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am melinda:

Oh man I love this Superfreak cover and was wondering if I would hear it on FMU someday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Krys O.:

Aw, Big Daddy reminds me of Frank Balesteri. He used to play them on his show.
  9:21am Lucky:

Joe - Shouldn't you be on a plane or something?
Avatar 9:22am Joe McG:

@Lucky: Ha ha. Sorry, you have to wait until next week to get rid of me. :)
Avatar 9:23am Roberto:

I'm sensing a kinky set theme developing here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am listener Rey:

Wow, that was a harrowing tale from Iceberg Slim. I'm detecting a "screaming goat alarm" trend in your selections this morning
Avatar 9:25am Cheri Pi:

Good morning :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Jeezy:

Mornin' y'all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am The Oscar:

Avatar 9:52am Marc Francis:

Avatar 9:54am Joe McG:

@queems: Jealous! We don't have it at FMU yet.
  9:55am queems:

@joe it was a little pricey but it is beautifully packaged
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am The Oscar:

@queems @Joe It's so good! When my girlfriend and I went on vacation last month I insisted on playing the entire thing in the car, even though we were in Maine which is literally fundamentally less tropical than where we usually are. Exotica is my go-to vacation music.
Avatar 9:58am Joe McG:

@queems/Oscar: Can't wait to look and listen! Hope we get it soon.
Swag For Life Member 9:58am destructo:

Waaaaaaaat I have never heard this cover of "deep deep down"
  9:59am queems:

@the oscar i was also listening in the car! because apparently it is on spotify? idk the person i was driving with was like look, they have that thing you just bought! anyway yes, it was lovely night time driving music
  9:59am MG:

Oh, damn. This song takes me to a happy place. Specifically a mixed tape a dearly departed friend made for me in 2000. Thanks for this.
Avatar 10:00am northguineahills:

Better Monday then usual, slept a bit, illness waning, work seems to be chill.... oh, and there's Joe!
Avatar 10:05am Joe McG:

Sure, MG! The rest of the CD is good, too. @ngh: Glad you feel better!
  10:10am Brendan:

Good morning Joe and Surface folk. Always nice to be here , and especially when you tune in to a flute track.

Thank you for the Creation! This is always great to hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Hughie Considine:

Morning, Joe! Smithers-Jones has to be one of Bruce Foxton's finest moments.
Swag For Life Member 10:37am tadpoles:

Wow to have Painter Man on a single Joe....excellent...great to hear thanks!
Avatar 10:37am Brian in UK:

The Skip Spence album title is a play on the Love song, I guess.
Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

@Krys: Glad you enjoyed that one! It sounded great in the studio, esp. that guitar break in the middle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am jmd:

@Hughie C-totally agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Brian C.:

JOe, you didn't get fired did you? I recall a Monday morning timeslot show many years ago when Hova played this (he'd been fired from his day job)
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@Brian C: Not yet, thank God! That record gives me chills. What a memory you have, and what an appropriate record for Hova to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Hughie Considine:

Gotta say I'm a little relieved the Godfathers chose to cover "Renee" as an instrumental. Somehow I don't think Peter Coyne would be the ideal vocalist for such a gentle choone...
Avatar 10:44am Joe McG:

@Hughie: Ha! It might be fun to hear him bellow "Don't walk away, Renee--or else!"
  10:44am queems:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Mark Hurst:

This cover is giving some real competition to the original.
  10:44am queems:

this is amazing
  10:45am Greg from ZONE 5:

Playing the Harrison Brothers home from Pittsburgh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Hughie Considine:

@Joe McG That is EXACTLY how he would do it.
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@Greg: Is the town still standing?
Avatar 10:46am Brian in UK:

Joe, if you have time for sightseeing a visit to Sacré-Cœur or Montparnasse Tower gives great views. Especially as the centre of Paris is fairly low level.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Hughie Considine:

One could do a righteous set focusing on soul singers named Betty.
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

Thanks, Brian! I definitely want to visit Sacre-Coeur. By the way, if anyone has Paris recommendations for record shops or just sites I shouldn't miss, feel free to chime in.
Avatar 10:50am βrian:

Keep an eye out for Amélie.
Avatar 10:52am Joe McG:

@Brian: I hope to see several!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am pantz:

With a name like Dick Feller, it's good he can look on the bright side of things.
  10:55am queems:

cowy things
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Vincent Nifigance:

This Dick Feller...
Avatar 10:55am Brian in UK:

Joe, not been here but the selections look kind of WFMU.
Avatar 10:57am Joe McG:

@Brian: Yes, definitely trying that place out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am pantz:

Anyone remember the PBS show Mulligan Stew, from the early 70's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am steveo:

great bunch of 45s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Vincent Nifigance:

@BrianInUK Sainkho Namchylak - Nick Sudnick
'Not Quite Songs'.

I would buy it on that title alone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Ken From Hyde Park:

Listener fred should have some record store suggestions in the general Paris region. Might be able to recommend some shows as well.
Avatar 11:02am Brian in UK:

Hapshash and the Coloured Coat featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids. If memory serves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Krys O.:

Mogwai! Nice. Loved their soundtrack to Les Revenants.
Avatar 11:08am Marc Francis:

Vacation! Us too!
Avatar 11:09am northguineahills:

Ken doesn't want respect!
Avatar 11:09am Roberto:

I think I remember that Ken guy. He played a lot of butt-related content.
  11:10am Listener Alexandra:

Are you going anywhere fun, Joe? Be safe on your journey....
Avatar 11:10am Joe McG:

@ngh: Ha ha ha @Alex: Off to Paree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am The Oscar:

Whoa-- never heard this version before! I had a cat named Smokey Joe as a kid, so this song will always hold a place in my heart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am frozen_peas:

what date did you do the Ireland songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Matt Fiveash:

It really sounds like Buddy says "a chicken walked in through the door" rather than "a chick came walking through the door"...
Avatar 11:13am Joe McG:

@frozen: It was at the end of August, not sure which one.
Avatar 11:13am Joe McG:

@Matt: Ha! Maybe he did. Waylon in hs book says he was a real jokester.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Matt Fiveash:

Also you might already know this Joe, but there's a cool Buddy-and-guitar version on the Apartment Tapes.
Avatar 11:14am northguineahills:

Spent many times in Waycross GA going to Cumberland Island State Park, GA, a fave haunt of mine.... oh, and Waylon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am The Oscar:

@Matt For the longest time (like until the past five years or so) I thought the line in "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" was "We got chickenS in the barn." In fairness, if I was at a party and discovered chickens in the barn, I would damn well let everyone know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am pantz:

Did you ever get a chance to watch that Waylon doc on cowboys, Joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Matt Fiveash:

And then of course there's "Dancin' with the chicken slacks" in Twistin' the Night Away.
Avatar 11:17am Joe McG:

@pantz: No, but I have it bookmarked. I definitely will see it! @Matt: Yes, that's the one I meant to play but I got the Fireballs one.
  11:20am Listener Alexandra:

Joe, I'm sure you're besieged by suggestions, but the drinking chocolate “l’Africain”
at Angelina on Rue de Rivoli is sort of a Paris institution ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am pantz:

He once shot a man for snorin' too loud, I hear.
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

@Alex: Thanks for the recommendation, Alex!
  11:24am melinda:

I like Robert Earl Keen, saw him once in the early days.
  11:25am Listener Alexandra:

Okay one more: Thanx God I'm a VIP (remarkably good thrift store), 12 Rue de Lancry, 75010 Paris, France ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am crateslinger:

Just got here and didn't read the whole thread, so maybe this has been discussed, but I see mention of Hova and it reminds me that I discovered the saturday morning kid's show this weekend. Been a long time since Greasy Kid's Stuff. My kid's are grown but still happy about this latest. Bob Brainum better still be on somewhere or coming back - it was his slot. 40 years and still going strong, I hope.
  11:26am Dennis Diken:

jolly good show Joe!
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

@Alex: Thanks! @Dennis: Thank you, good sir! @melinda: I saw him around the time of this album and he was fine indeed.
  11:28am melinda:

@crateslinger agree, big fan of both Bob and A & R's new show.
  11:29am melinda:

I have no Paris suggestions but if it were me I'd be going for that drinking chocolate.
  11:30am Brendan:

Wow that Robert Earl Keen really escalated there! That thing would be Story Corner worthy even if it were an instrumental.
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

@Brendan: The music sure tells the story!
Avatar 11:31am Jay/London:

me and my friend Celine just love ur show this afternoon Joe :)
Avatar 11:33am Joe McG:

Thanks, Jay! My best to you and Celine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Itzall Ablurr:

and, speaking of chicken... whatever happened to "Roasters"?!?
Great show today, Joe, as always.
Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

Kenny is 80 now! Maybe he got tired of looking after those chickens....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Krys O.:

It's been 37 years since I was in Paris and I have no suggestions for you, Joe, except to visit Jardins de Tuileries and Versailles, if you have the chance. Those were my favorite spots when I was studying there on a six-week scholarship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Ken From Hyde Park:

After visiting Jim Morrison at Père Lachaise, I found it fun to duck into random pâtisserie shops and buy a tasty treat. And to buy some cherries and munch on them while walking along the boulevards.
  11:37am frenchee:

I was humming "Animal Fair" all week after Amanda and R's show last week. I love that a new generation will listen to a new kids' show on WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am The Oscar:

Lest we forget, Kenny's not the only country music chicken magnate: www.bakersfieldbiscuits.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Rich in Washington:

I thought that was Slim again for some reason. I was about to yell WATCH OUT, JOE!
  11:38am melinda:

I just bought the Kristofferson CD and was listening to this all day Saturday!
Avatar 11:38am Sem:

@Itzall Ablurr: I refer you to the 'FMU expert on Roasters: Marty McSorley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Krys O.:

Oh, and Pere Lachaise cemetary is fun. Really, it is. I took the tour three times.
  11:40am emily:

so great to hear this Kris Kristofferson. thanks
Avatar 11:40am Sem:

Joe, @fred in Paris will no doubt have useful record stores suggestions for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am The Oscar:

Man, I always forget how good this album is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Rich in Washington:

The nineties were all about roasting chickens. Forget your gulf wars and beanie babies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Devin B.:

Joe: If you want to see some art, L'orangerie and the Pompidou Center are both excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Ken From Hyde Park:

The last time I saw Kenny Rogers on TV was the Reno 911 episode where he got shot.
@Krys O. - Yeah, there was some monument for Homer and someone scrawled "Simpson" underneath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Itzall Ablurr:

Haha, thanks Sem. I'm sure he has an opinion about it!
  11:42am frenchee:

So many others besides Jim. Oscar Wilde....Piaf...some guy named Chopin...Bizet
Avatar 11:42am Joe McG:

@Krys and Ken and Devin and frenchee (aptly named!): Thanks for the suggestions! @melinda: Odd coincidence!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Rich in Washington:

just coincidentally read about the origin of this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Itzall Ablurr:

Good lord, what a perfect pairing- Kristofferson penned, Joplin delivered. Sweet demo and perfect still!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Krys O.:

Lorrie Morgan, daughter of George Morgan, and her then-husband, Sammy Kershaw had a failed restaurant chain in Nashville called Hot Chickens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Krys O.:

Love this demo version.
  11:43am GeorgeSimian:

I think Janis butchers this song. I know I’m in a minority. This version is better then the usual one. But still not Kris.
Swag For Life Member 11:44am museguy:

Joe McG, A perfect set of music, thank you.
Avatar 11:44am Brian in UK:

Great show, Joe. Enjoy Paris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Ken From Hyde Park:

The streets of Paris have plenty of innovative outdoor urinals now, so no need to void the bladder alongside stairways or wherever.
Avatar 11:45am Joe McG:

Many thanks, Brian! @Ken: I've heard about these things and will no doubt try one out!
Avatar 11:45am Sean B.:

Almost forgot about how great Kris Kristofferson is. How could I really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Krys O.:

Yes, the streets have pissoirs AND they wash the sidewalks, at least when I was there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Rich in Washington:

I always loved Eugene Chadbourne/Shockabilly's take on this song.
  11:47am yp:

can girls use the pissoirs
