This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hiya Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm chresti:

I hope the stream behaves tonight-last night was crazy!
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

me too
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

was it crazy last night still? or do you mean last week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm melinda:

hi folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, Flash and all!!
Avatar 7:00pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 7:00pm Flash Strap:

Hi James! how goes it all?
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

sort of a terrible day, obviously, but glad to see you all tonight
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

love this Alessandroni track, this is a top library cut for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm chresti:

It was crazier last night-with extreme volume changes
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

tonight we focus on the Cenacolo label, but we're opening with a couple odd LPs from the parent publisher of Cenacolo, Edizioni Musicali Delfino / Giraffa
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

oh how strange! well, fingers crossed for tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm chresti:

so far so good!
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

love when library music goes underwater
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm listener james from westwood:

Busy during most of it but couldn't resist checking on the nightmare in the swamp. Having Julie in earlier was an immensely soothing balm.
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

whole day was truly a nightmare, couldn't take my eyes off it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Dave in Vermont:

what is "library music"? have heard it mentioned many times on FMU in the last year or so
Avatar 7:15pm northguineahills:

Wait, I'm here, forgot to drop ....*wilhelm scream*... errr, in......
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dave! just from wiki here:

Production music (also known as stock music or library music) is the name given to recorded music that can be licensed to customers for use in film, television, radio and other media. Oftentimes, the music is produced and owned by production music libraries.
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

@Dave: Library music is usually music recorded somewhat anonymously by composers and session musicians that can later be used for film, tv, and other media. Hence the titles are descriptive of the 'feel' or 'mood'. Usually not commercially available and only found in second-hand stores.
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

oh, Flash got it first...
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

I'll add to that that I think it's particularly interesting in that it creates a space for wide varieties of experimentation, despite its commercial motivators, and thus is often home to avant garde stuff, both intentional and otherwise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Dave in Vermont:

thanks to both of you- that was helpful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm melinda:

I like the underwater feel, had a terrible day too and it is soothing.
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

even when it's not at its best, library music ofetn makes me think of the music you hear in dreams - sort of anonymous, nondescript, but weirdly compelling, a distorted mirror of musical trends of the day
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

glad the sounds can bee the balm Melinda
Avatar 7:22pm northguineahills:

Now that my infection is abating, I have energy for the first time years (tissue samples suggest I had a low grade sample for years, it just flared up this summer). So, one positive among negatives. I'll take it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm chresti:

I even like the label names
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

Oh, belated hello NGH! and very glad to hear that nit of better news
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: yeah, big time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm melinda:

Good news ngh. Curious what infection you had, if you don't mind sharing (I understand if you do, I'm just a sickie and tend to talk illness).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm chresti:

is it free to use library music? Is it public domain?
Avatar 7:26pm northguineahills:

errr..., low grade infection, it just wasn't very symptomatic, so I didn't notice, but the drs. say it might have created chronic fatigue. Now, if my skin will heal (which it is, just at a glacial pace)>
Avatar 7:26pm still b/p:

I've got a medium bunch of library music on vinyl sitting in a box here. I think a few years ago I told Uncle Michael he could probably have it. If someone's driving from northern New England through Kansas....let me know.

If I'd written down all the notes, thoughts, assessments and frustrations sparked by the late-day and evening portions I caught of the hearing today...they'd have to send a search dog in to find me buried and slightly crazed in my ceiling-high drifts of scribbles.
Avatar 7:27pm hyde:

hi, sorry i'm late. i was eating duck tsukumen
Avatar 7:28pm geezerette:

I brought folding chairs for all, so we can ride this elevator up, down, sideways, & back again, over and over!
Avatar 7:28pm northguineahills:

@melinda: It was just a staph infection. Something happened this summer that made it flare up that my arms swelled up and my ankles for a weekend wouldn't fit in my shoes. The inflammation is 85% down, but it caused a knock-on effect that was a very minor psoriasis that soon enveloped 90% of my skin (now down to 60%).
Avatar 7:29pm geezerette:

Hyde, hope you brought snacks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm melinda:

@ngh damn infections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm melinda:

hey hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm chresti:

ugh! The hearing! I guess BK gets grouchy without his beer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm chresti:

Thanks geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm doctorjazz:

Hey, all!
I have to get away from that $!#@?!$_@ hearing!
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

Hi B/P! wish I was in Kansas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm chresti:

Hi everybody again!
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

Hi and welcome Hyde!

Very glad to see you Geezerette!

Hi Doc! me too, what a travesty
Avatar 7:35pm hyde:

hi melinda and geezerette! let's see, i have some......funyuns?
Avatar 7:36pm northguineahills:

A.R. Luciani, new to me!
Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

this really is VERY nice baroque jazz, imo
Avatar 7:36pm geezerette:

Chresti, you're more than welcome!
I Watched it too, disgusting. Boy, he really, really, likes beer.
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

he was revolting to behold in every way
Avatar 7:39pm geezerette:

This music is a perfect counterpoint to the lunacy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm chresti:

He was squirming for it!
Avatar 7:41pm hyde:

that sounds like an Alessandroni whistle
Avatar 7:41pm geezerette:

Funyuns! Perfect!
Avatar 7:41pm northguineahills:

Who's the musician on that Grandangolo album?
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

squirming like a goblin, caught by his beard and confronted
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

I presume it is Alessandroni, though I can't prove it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm melinda:

My uncle came up with the Funyuns name.
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

@melinda WHAT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm melinda:

Wouldn't it be funny if there were a rival Italian whistler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

I was listening to Fabio's show while watching BK's face turn from white to various shades of pink
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: it's Amedeo Tommasi. great record
Avatar 7:43pm northguineahills:

Oh, I couldn't read the name at the top....
Avatar 7:43pm geezerette:

Evan, Chresti, he was like a tiny trump. Thin-skinned entitlement in the boy's club.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: very small type
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm chresti:

Melinda! What?1
!
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

is that really true Melinda!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm chresti:

??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm melinda:

@ hyde It's possible that he was technically not my uncle at the time of Funyuns genesis, since my aunt and he divorced when I was young but yes, he had a career in advertising.
Avatar 7:45pm northguineahills:

Oh, I just recognized Stereolab used that font and color scheme on a single before, and they were into library recs....
Avatar 7:45pm geezerette:

Melinda, ha! I'm seeing that duel in my mind!
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

wild
Avatar 7:46pm hyde:

@melinda that's amazing. it's a genius bit of marketing, honestly
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: big time
Avatar 7:47pm glenn:

well, the whole b.k. is crazy enough to watch from furrin' parts. i can't imagine what it's like there, especially for those who aren't crazed right wing twat waffles.
Avatar 7:47pm geezerette:

Melinda, wow!
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

hi Glenn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm melinda:

My aunt and cousins lived at my grandmother's for a while, and some of their stuff got left behind, like the odd troll doll, and a 45 of the Frito Lay theme song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, where's the Earth-shattering ka-boom?
Oh, Explorers Room, not Exploders Room
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ken! we try to be incendiary when we can
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

really into the Bergman-esque gloom of these couple tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm melinda:

I couldn't watch the hearing today but saw commentary on my social media feed. Feels like we're going to hell. I have felt sort of guilty for not calling my senator to protest, but I've become convinced that she never was the supposed moderate she pretended to be and has been wasting our time with this pretense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm chresti:

the Frito Lay song! wow! don't remember that one
Avatar 7:52pm geezerette:

Glenn, it's grim. Talk about your alien invasions!

Melinda, was wampum cornn chips his too?
Avatar 7:53pm glenn:

see, if you don't call her, then she'll feel free to vote for him. on the other hand, call and tell her that your voting for her depends on how she votes will definitely make her listen.
Avatar 7:54pm glenn:

'if you call and tell her'.
Avatar 7:54pm geezerette:

Evan, I'm kind of falling in love with this music.
Can't believe how weirdly appropriate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm melinda:

@geeze I don't know.
@chresti it seemed like an in-house promotional thing. I'l have to ask my cousins about it.
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

it's pretty obvious that these ghouls don't listen to their supposed constituency, but it's still a fine gesture to register your dissent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm chresti:

do you have the frito-lay 45, melinda?
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

extremely chuffed to hear it, geezerette!
Avatar 7:58pm geezerette:

Evan, it's the least we can do for our souls, the ones we may not even believe in.
Avatar 7:59pm still b/p:

Even recognizing the pressure and anger (real or faux) involved, as I watched BKs evasions and misdirectional redundancies and contentiousness and pugnaciousness, I kept thinking, "That -- THAT? -- is the substantial, deep, adept, practiced, balanced legal mind that's been touted and praised by his promoters?" No doubt he has experience and can write an opinion, but sweet sufferin' Moses, he seemed so intractably determined to be unconstructive and illogical...and so coming across as lacking any reassuring maturity and gravity.

I've long had trouble with the Collins way, and did also with the Snowe way.
Avatar 8:00pm glenn:

they want and need to be re elected. they'll never have better jobs. those jobs depend on the voters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm melinda:

@glenn I've called in the past, and she has been heavily protested, called, with regular office visits from constituents and folks getting arrested outside her office. Yet she complains to a rightwing news org that the crowdfunded campaign to fund her opponent if she votes to confirm was a form of bribery. And she didn't want his papers released. She is giving all the signals that her mind is made up but she doesn't want to own it yet.
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

all i mean is, call your senator and THEN contemplate how you can enact revolutionary terror if they don't listen. one doesn't work without the other
Avatar 8:01pm northguineahills:

Angelo Componeschi, also new to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm chresti:

yeah. based on his behavior, he cooked his own goose. You would think...
Avatar 8:02pm glenn:

also, kavanaugh invoking the "some other dude did it" defence was laughable. well, his whole testimony was laughable, but that was the worst.
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

this whole LP is just bizarre
Avatar 8:02pm still b/p:

"doesn't want to own it yet." The Collins MO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm chresti:

Is Collins your senator?
Avatar 8:03pm geezerette:

Evan@8:00: agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm chresti:

this one fantastico!
Avatar 8:05pm still b/p:

Yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

I suspect that Collins might not be running again.
@b/p exactly. She only votes against the party line when it won't affect the outcome.
@chresti yes. And she's been weasely and disingenuous in public statements.
Avatar 8:06pm geezerette:

Gesso! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm melinda:

This Italian movie is fun.
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

speaking of Italian movies, I finally watched The Great Silence! I think that was on Hyde's recommendation specifically? excellent Corbucci
Avatar 8:14pm glenn:

i'm hopefully going to lago di garda in the spring.
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

wow that sounds lovely Glenn
Avatar 8:18pm glenn:

i would move to italy in an instant.
Avatar 8:18pm still b/p:

I've favorited this show.

Alessandroni doing that classic Alessandroni thing of vocalizing beneath the instrument, lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm melinda:

this is killer
