As a WFMU listener, I find myself sometimes thinking about the connections between gospel, blues, and rock. I suppose I also need to add jazz onto the equation. Maybe jazz is a reaction against the vocal traditions that grew out of church hymns? Anyone recommend any readings that explore thoughts like this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm

Listener Robert:

Actually that's a general problem with all instrumentals, going back centuries: They practically invite wise guys to concoct lyrics, usually nasty ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm

lol such a good point robert...
  8:48pm
Listener Robert:

I even concoct some lyrics to to short instrumental passages in pop music that has lyrics. For instance, in "Do Ya" I add "...and sawing wood and sawing wood and sawing wood and sawing wood."

Then there was the person whose grandma was always adding from the radio ad "L-A-V-A, L-A-V-A" to the kettle drums in "Thus Spake Zarathustra".
