Listener comments!

  9:15am Listener Gregory:

Morning, Jeff. You could also make things harder for yourself if you tied one hand behind your back. Just an idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Hello there, @Listener Gregory! I generally prefer to shoot myself in the foot, but yours is a good suggestion, too.
  9:18am Listener Gregory:

There is plenty of time to do either. My specialty is shooting myself in the foot while it is in my mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Jeff Golick:

It's a rare talent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Dave in Vermont:

good morning
i didn't hear all of your opening spiel; are you doing singles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Dave in VT! I am not doing singles - I'm not set up for it, technically, or constitutionally. But I am limiting myself to songs no longer than 7:00, in common cause with my fellow DJs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Dave in Vermont:

well six minutes and 50 seconds give or take should be enough for most bathroom breaks and runs to the kitchen for coffee or snacks
interesting patriotic set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Oh, and only music that I've come across or otherwise "imported" this calendar year.
  9:35am Listener Gregory:

I think most of the classic Ornette Coleman Qt pieces are in your time limit, though you wouldn't have received them in 2018.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

It's possible I re-received them this year, as I re-ripped a lot of stuff in preparation for our move earlier this summer.
Avatar 9:42am Sem:

Good morning. Jeff, and hello to the OUT crowd as well as lucky serendipitous listeners around the round world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

@Sem! Greetings!
  9:51am Listener Gregory:

FWIW: Ramblin', 6:36; Face of the Bass, 6:57; Lonely Woman, 5:01, Congeniality, 6:47. I wonder if we have lost the ability to create such jewels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am doctorjazz:

Hello! Got here for Fairport, cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Scraps:

somehow I thought it was saturday. shoot, lost a hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Jeff Golick:

You are welcome at any time, @Scraps! How goes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

Appendix Out? Like his voice, reminds me of someone from long ago, but can't pull it up .
  10:18am Listener Gregory:

I think a lot of John Zorn Book of Angels recordings clock in under 7 min. (Sorry for my stream-of-consciousness ramblings on this.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

@doc: it's early Alasdair Roberts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am doctorjazz:

I'd guess lots of the 1st 10 Masada albums (on DIW, Zorn, Dave Douglass,... ) would fit the time limit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

I appreciate your ramblings, @LG. Or, rather, Ramblin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Scraps:

@Jeff: ehh. still october. four years ago, Velma died. (october 18). and my stroke happened (october 6). I look forward to november.

how bout you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Scraps:

Short short jazz times: Naked City
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

I'm sure that makes for a tough month, @Scraps. My sympathies.

Things here are...ok? All things considered, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am doctorjazz:

Lovely string plucking ... I knew this album was out, guess I need to get it...

Hang in, Scraps, October's almost gone ... Sorry.
  10:29am Listener Gregory:

Naked City! Very true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Scraps:

Many short jazz times are involved with vocals. Though not nearly so with avant-garde vocals....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am doctorjazz:

I did get someone to repair my external hard drive with a ton of music that failed. Still looking for a not too expensive back up of anyone has suggestions, it would be appreciated
  10:34am JtotheK:

Red Clay jams! Hi Jeff, salutations everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Scraps:

Whew, have to lie down. Still listening. Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Jeff Golick:

I use BackBlaze, @doc, which is a cloud backup service. Not too expensive. Doug used them, too, though when he lost a ton of music, they didn't have it all? So, mixed reviews, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jeff Golick:

G'morning, @JtotheK! Nice to see you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

Note: I will fill in the accuplaylist with more details post-show. Not really with it enough this morning to get everything in as we go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am doctorjazz:

I recall he got 90-95% back (could be wrong, though). Though with the amount of music he must have stored, 5-10% would still amount to much music lost. I'll look into Backblaze. A local computer repair guy got the whole drive onto another, cost a bit over $200, including a new external drive, so it actually wasn't bad. Don't think I can rely on crashes always being repaired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am doctorjazz:

It to him forever to repair it ,though, but he was half the price of other local techs offering the same service
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Uncle Michael:

Sorry I'm late. I have a note.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Jeff Golick:

@Uncle Michael is here! Let the spitballing begin.
  10:48am Dean:

Shoot, I missed the Jack Wilkins. I listened last night to VSOP's Red Clay, and thought about spinning the Wilkins album. I remember special ordering it from the record store a long, long time ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @Dean. I have heard very little VSOP. That Wilkins was reissued earlier this year, I think.
  10:49am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, all these cuts are singles, so there is no "album information" to add! So, just take it easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Or, as I've named this playlist on my computer, "singles."
  10:50am Listener Gregory:

If a regular listener were to hear this show without any of the explanations, would s/he notice anything different?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Probably not?
  10:53am Dean:

It's been overdue for a digital release. I bought the LP around 1980 after hearing that track on the radio. One of the earlier jazz records in my collection, not counting jazz-prog-fusion stuff like Passport, Isotope...
  10:54am Dean:

The VSOP sounded great, not least Hubbard himself.
  10:59am Listener Gregory:

Maybe there's less "jazz" on this show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

Yeah. And forecast calling for less jazz ahead, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Uncle Michael:

I like this halal hop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Jeff Golick:

And a genre is coined.
  11:02am ike:

Sounds good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am doctorjazz:

That was cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Slowly coming into focus out here on the west coast…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Same here, @Granny Spicy Tuna. Welcome, welcome.
  11:09am Dean:

These songs are terrible! And the portions are so small!
Avatar 11:12am Sem:

I've remembered that WA line from the first time I heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Uncle Michael:

The Winston's jingle!
  11:13am rw:

Good morning! Focus?
Avatar 11:14am glenn:

welp, so much for my brewers vs. astros prediction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Jeff Golick:

@rw! @glenn! At least I know who I'm rooting against.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am doctorjazz:

Seeger, huh? Sounded like Liverpool London in the 60's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am coelacanth∅:

gmorning Jeff & OUTies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Uncle Michael:

I'm so glad the Brewers lost. It was very hard not to use profanity in this post. Go Sox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

Avatar 11:17am glenn:

yep. go dodgers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Jeff Golick:

Uh oh.
  11:18am Dean:

What is all this chatter about beermakers and sulfur oxide?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 11:18am glenn:

although i'm pretty sure it'll be sox in six.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am doctorjazz:

Great Buzzcocks track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am coelacanth∅:

"everybody loves the sunshine" next? "everybody" by Madonna?
Avatar 11:23am glenn:

hmmm. if rush and the spirit of radio comes on next imma wonder about jeff's sanity.
Avatar 11:24am glenn:

good way to recycle the calling sister midnight bass riff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Waste not, want not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

Yes, this is the "Tony Visconti 2017 mix," I'm glad you asked.
  11:26am rw:

I'd forgotten about this song. I want to mix the Eno part back into the Iggy version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Hey-o! Big thanks and big ups to listeners @doctorjazz and @robert in Fullerton, CA for pledgy pledge pledging!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

I love songs that mention route numbers.
Avatar 11:34am glenn:

and that would be how many songs exactly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Jeff Golick:

Probably about 66.
  11:36am Dean:

My two favorite bus lines are the G San Francisco and the F Berkeley, because just saying them is cathartic.
  11:39am rw:

Get your kicks on the F Berkeley. I remember getting a kick out of seeing the BFD signs on the sides of the Berkeley fire trucks last time I was there.
Avatar 11:40am glenn:

oh, transit routes. i thought you meant rural mail routes.
Avatar 11:41am glenn:

spadina bus, by the shuffle demons. it's jazz.
  11:41am Dean:

For sure, @rw! They wear the BFD emblem loudly and proudly. Sorta like the law firm Morrison & Forrester, I suppose. They refer to themselves as MoFo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

I guess I meant state routes? Like, Route 128, Modern Lovers etc etc.
Avatar 11:42am glenn:

or an approximation thereof.
  11:42am Dean:

Some are state, some are U.S.
Avatar 11:47am Sem:

Thanks for your show today, Jeff. I'll catch up with you and all next time, if there's still a seat on Further.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Jeff Golick:

Always got a spot for you, @Sem. Take care!
  11:48am rw:

Jeff, I may need to head out in a sec. Thanks again for taking us Out. We all appreciate the energy, expertise and effort you put into this thing. Super cool, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Jeff Golick:

Thank you, @rw! Glad to have you here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am doctorjazz:

Almost done-Thanks, Jeff, singularly fun show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Jeff Golick:

My pleasure, @doctorjazz! Thanks for the pledge!
  11:53am Listener Gregory:

Speaking of singles, I just heard that Phil Glass is going to perform his Music in 12 Parts at Town Hall. That is a fantastic early work, but I have it on 4 CDs, so the concert is going to be how long?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

I'd guess 12 parts, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Jeff Golick:

  11:55am Listener Gregory:

Just looked it up. The music is four hours. There are two short and one long intermission (for dinner). So... like 6 hours. That will not fit on the Singles Going Steady show.
  11:56am Listener Gregory:

Nothing in the Pep Llopis reminded me of this, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Avatar 11:58am Brian in UK:

Oh Lawks is that the time. Well, hello/goodbye, Jeff.
  11:58am rw:

LG, I saw a performance of that work a couple years ago but with only one intermission. I say you should go if you can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Uncle Michael:

Thanks.Jeff. I gotta go see if there' a disposable razor available in the lobby of this hotel...preferably a new one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Jeff Golick:

@Brian! Hi & bye! Glad you stopped in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

Good luck, @UM. Maybe the rest of your day be smooth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm coelacanth∅:

UM i saw one in the trash can just outside the front door. 'looked new.
Avatar 12:04pm Brian in UK:

For some reason this reminds me of Leos Janáček's
On an Overgrown Path.
  12:05pm Listener Gregory:

Very nice show, Jeff. It took a lot of work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm coelacanth∅:

i go to work now.
Thanks Jeff take care
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Jeff Golick:

Ta ta, @LG, @coel, @Brian (that's some kulcha right there; nice accents)!
