i was 13 in 1972 -- i listened to WABC too!
but was also migrating to WPIX-FM (101.9, i think?), as they played more than what was strictly Top 40
AND i listened to Casey Kasem's Top 40 Countdown religiously every Sunday morning! (hah! religiously indeed! my Dad would take my younger sister and i to 8am Mass, and we would get home just in time)

one of the most bizarre/incongruous sights i have ever seen was the 7th and 8th cheerleaders twirling batons to "I Am Woman" -- even then i was soon pissed off! (see, back then girls were not allowed to play basketball! only do cheerleading . . . i sucked at sports, but felt bad for a friend of mine who was an amazing basketball player . . . but, by the time i got to 8th grade, we DID have a girls' basketball team)

my older sister got me into Sly & the family inadvertently
she used to steal bags full of 45s because she could, i guess, and she gave me "family affair" for xmas. i knew she didn't give a shit what i wanted, which was hard rock music, mostly. then she gave me another copy of it for my birthday 1 month later. so i listened to it again, and i liked it.
