Msafiri Zawose's Tantalizing Tanzanian Music of Past, Present and Future

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Msafiri Zawose superbly carries on the musical traditions of central Tanzania, learned from his late great father, Dr. Hukwe Zawose. And he gives the music a 21st century spin on his latest album, Uhamiaji, on the venerable Soundway label. The album is a roots / electronic collaboration between Msafiri and Sam Jones of the cultural / humanitarian non-profit Soundthread. Old-school or new, this is captivating music not quite like any other in the world. We're thrilled Msafiri will join us to play and chat on this week's show.

Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Bas NL:

Hi Stanley! The later, the better? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Stanley:

I can only do my best. But I don't think I should have started the bottle of 11 percent barrel aged stout, it is going down easy, though.

Hello!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Bas NL:

Sounds fantastic; i love a good stout. Enjoying a small whisky here; got to keep my head about. Tomorrow a visit to the Utrecht Mega CD and records fair! (Yes, that's gonna cost me..)

Hi Chresti!

Great woman singer! I've been looking for a song to do a hula hoop solo for bellydance recital, maybe I will choose this, thanks TPSP

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Rob W:

Good evening everyone, thanks for listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm steveo:

Thanks to you, Rob. Got it turned up nice and loud over here!
Avatar 6:41pm northguineahills:

What is the instrument Msafiri Zawose is playing in the pic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Rob W:

The instrument is a type of harp-fiddle called zeze. On our session he plays a smaller version. This article - helda.helsinki.fi... - tells all about it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm хтinа:

Looked up The Turbans. love it when the music vid is shot travelogue style.
Avatar 6:46pm northguineahills:

Thanks Rob!
Avatar 6:50pm TDK60:

chresti: Is your air better or still smoky?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Smilty - Hamburger Mario cooling out on the sidelines for now. Will probably bring him back for the new year.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm chresti:

Hi TDK- Air down here is okay after the wind shifted last week. Still bad up north, where my family is, in the San Francisco bay area. Thanks for asking!
Avatar 7:17pm TDK60:

chresti: Okay; I saw that air is bad all the way up to Portland.
Avatar 7:19pm northguineahills:

Met a kid down here that wants to go to grad school in NYC after he graduates. I gave him some pointers (and what and what not to do).
7:27pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

This is amazing. Msafiri of the Zawose family is there? Live? Tell him his sound and his family's move some of us to tears. This is amazing and transcends distance and culture. Total love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Drunken Creep:

Sounding great, glad to be tuned in!
7:29pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

I'm listening to magic. Beautiful magic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Drunken Creep:

Loved that ending arpeggio, what a lift!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Rob W:

Thanks everyone. @ el Garee - we recorded this last week so he's not here right now but I will definitely let me know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Ike:

Sounds great!
7:41pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

One stringed instrument used on some of his father and Charles' recordings was the zeze I believe. He plays that here. That is just an incredible sound with haunting vocals that cut beyond all others. Much love for the collective work.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

Boubacar Traoré, is another soul-shattering singer
Avatar 7:44pm TDK60:

..also: been still surprised Rachid Taha left us recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Rob W:

Yes absolutely el Garee and Chresti!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm adampsyche:

I'm loving y'all nerding out about the instruments as much as I'm loving the set
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:46pm chresti:

Thanks Rob W, I much appreciate the links you provide to supplement the sound
Avatar 7:47pm northguineahills:

That was amazing, thanks, Msafiri!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm chresti:

adam- totally want those instruments!
Avatar 7:50pm TDK60:

..this Uhamiaji album is a gas..
7:54pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Msafiri is just taking the next step in that musical evolution. This reminds me of "Assembly" (Real World Records). But this set is the raw side that is needed. A lot of this mixes well with EDM and experimental items that go pop. What a great interview! Your mix is cranking so strong.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm chresti:

I thought of the Residents in some ways
7:59pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

It is a shame that such a strong rebel voice as Rachid Taha's is gone. I didn't know.
Avatar 8:03pm northguineahills:

Anything from Zanzibar (if we're being Tanzanian completists)?
8:05pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Assembly... a monster of a fusion album. Good into to the 'Real World' for the casual listener. This recording just rocks.
Avatar 8:05pm TDK60:

Rob, your show is rockin' out once again!, I'll have to tell some of my rock friends..
Avatar 8:08pm northguineahills:

(Zanzibar puts the Zania in Tanzania. otherwise it would just be Tanganyika).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Rob W:

Thanks TDK60 and yes ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm maestroso:

@northguineahills: I'm old enough to remember Tanganyika. And the Belgian Congo. I had cousins in Leopoldville.
8:12pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Rob's always rocked! Keep the faith baby... Times and peeps just came around to understand the music in the US. Listen to BBC 6 now. It's been everywhere there for years.
Avatar 8:15pm TDK60:

..may even tell some of my *post*-rock pals..
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm chresti:

wow thanks!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Rob W:

Sorry about the playback hiccup Chresti, here's the song in full!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm chresti:

no worries! ha!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm chresti:

I've never heard him with a band
Avatar 8:27pm northguineahills:

@maestro: Oh, old good ol' King Leopoldville, definitely a good one to rename Kinshasa, while Stanleyville is now Kinsamgani, the original name of the town was definitely more innocuous.
8:41pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

Great points about Kinshasha and Kinsamgani. That said, maybe Rob could play a great "Congotronics" killer cuts...
Avatar 8:54pm northguineahills:

My apologies, I had typo in there, it should be Kinsangani.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thank, Rob. Have a safe & enjoyable Turkey Day.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Bas NL:

TThanks Rob! Great show!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm chresti:

Thanks Rob! Happy holidays!
