I heard a sound bite with someone sayng she loves Black Friday shopping, the crowds, the vibe. I was, of course, thinking about how many people are at the polar(!) opposite in assessing the appeal and insisting on avoidance, or how they experience the vibe of the crush and the fevered commerce with sour endurance.

i've never liked shopping much (except for for music) and don't deal gracefully with crowds of inconsiderate people unless i have an exact route through them that i'm familiar with, in which case i'm extremely efficient. (without shoving people)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
Phillippe Bastille:

The best trick I learned for dealing with crowded lots and traffic in suburban shopping center sprawl is to drive behind the stores where the delivery trucks go. You're kind of committed to one end of the shopping center or the other, but you sure get there fast
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
coelacanth∅:

can you get in that way Phillippe? and is your vehicle at risk?
  5:34pm
JakeGould:

I miss the pre-Cabbage Patch Riot days of mall shopping. It’s all violence for a savings of almost nothing on true crap. Just order it online if you are into discounts.

I also miss food courts at malls.
  5:37pm
eddy:

Superb show. Thanks from Wisconsin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
coelacanth∅:

heh...not that it matters much to me. i go to a shopping mall once every few years.
i once worked in one though, and i just parked in the farthest space so not to waste time (& for the exercise)... unless it was pouring rain
  5:39pm
JakeGould:

The Cabbage Patch Kid riots of the early 1980s is the precursor to all of this Black Friday B.S. youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
Phillippe Bastille:

No risk and easy. They actually make it convenient for the trucks by putting the access just as you get in the shopping center so they don't have to drive through any of the parking. I worked at a large Sears store in my college days and we would only get three trucks a day, so your odds of ever seeing a truck back there at all is very small, and the paved areas are pretty wide to give them room to maneuver.

Avatar 5:40pm
TDK60:

Digging the Turkish sounds, right, Turkish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm sure there're still food courts in malls...i mean, that was the main attraction for some people.
- i remember the cabbage patch kids riots. that's when i lost all faith in america!
  5:42pm
JakeGould:

Malls are just a dying thing. Yeah, some places still have them but it’s nowhere like what it used to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
coelacanth∅:

that's surprising,Jake. i worked in the woodbridge mall in nj and that didn't have one but that was lo-fi compared to some malls. (& it was the mid-80s, if that matters)
  5:46pm
JakeGould:

Why is it surprising? Brick and mortar retail is dying, real estate is being repurposed for other uses and online retail is growing. New Jersey is an outlier, but still mall culture of the U.S. just doesn’t exist as it once did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
Phillippe Bastille:

They've been remaking a mall near me that is rather interesting. They have morphed it into a mall/village center combo where there are a bunch of places you can't access directly from inside the mall -- you have to go outside and wander through the benches and trees to get there -- some retail, but mostly restaurants and bars. Some of the interior retail is being converted to entertainment venues, like a bowling alley. Interesting concept
  5:49pm
RomanDogBird:

@PhillipeBastile: Where is this? Sounds interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Columbia MD. They have virtually no pad sites, the places just back up against the mall
  5:52pm
JakeGould:

I admire anyplace that builds new bowling alleys. I’m sick of hearing about stuff like shuffleboard and bocce ball courts opening up in NYC. Even corn hole! Nobody cares about that stuff. Pool and bowling is what people want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
coelacanth∅:

well, i try to support local business, but as i said, i don't shop much. i sometimes buy used audio equipment and that's not available at a local business; so online it is. (NOT amazon though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
coelacanth∅:

i'd like to see a pinball arcade set up shop near me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Phillippe Bastille:

would love a good pinball arcade
  5:55pm
JakeGould:

Shopping local is not bad, but it’s one of those things that blames the consumer for local businesses dying. OMFG! If only people didn't buy off of Amazon and instead bought locally these businesses would still be in business. It’s kinda a lie. The world is changing. I buy local when I can, but stop blaming the individual for a systemic change.

- and true about @ 5.55 one shouldn't blame the consumer for wanting or needing to spend less money on a purchase, and online retailers have much less overhead so...systemic change.
