Hiya, Chresti! Welcome!

Mark Fisher's complete top 100 British albums, if anyone is curious: rateyourmusic.com...

Franco Twinkie:

Howdy Sam! I just got back from been with my mom. She's starting to speaks her own special convoluted language, just like Mark E. Smith!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Sam Segal:

Hahahahaha, as long as her temper isn't as bad as Mark E's you should be alright, Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Sam Segal:

I beg the forgiveness of anyone who finds the Blue Nile unbearably cheesy, but I must admit: "Hats" blows my fucking mind every time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm

Hi Sam and partners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Sam Segal:

Hey, Melinda! Thanks for stepping in.

C in Thailand:

Hello, Sam. I haven't heard that Pet Shop Boys song in a couple of decades. I think it has potential to be a much better song with different production. But I guess the same could be said for many mid/late 80's pop songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
chresti:

Forgive me Sam, I missed the Blue Nile while putting the car away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Sam Segal:

C! You know, many of my close friends call me, "C." Thanks for dropping by! For me, the 80s aesthetics are a joy, but they took me awhile to get used to, and I also wasn't actually there when the stuff was new, so my ear might have different associations than yours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Franco Twinkie:

To test the durability of the music from any era or specific year, you must borrow your mom's car, pop than artifact in the CD player, drive around your old neighbourhood scream singing at the top of your lungs. You'll know after a trip to the store if it falls into the eternal slot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Sam Segal:

Tried that over Thanksgiving with Fleetwood Mac "Tusk." Totally ripped. Eternal for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Franco Twinkie:

It works!

Be safe, use caution with candles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Franco Twinkie:

Thanks for cluing me, Sam. We've got a plastic plug-in menorah that will be dusted off post haste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Sam Segal:

That's a good reminder, Chresti! I'm an amateur when it comes to running my own menorah operation.

Aloha Sam and people of popular persuasion.

@Franco: (plastic plug-in menorah) Worst chanukah porn evar!!! (there are probably worse)

Dean:

Not having heard the set consisting largely of "New Romantics" tracks, I nevertheless respond to the roster, because I was there when it was new. I loved Magazine's first album, only selectively the rest. I never got Gary Numan, OMD, etc. I remember wishing I could like Blue Nile, because they recorded early on for Linn, at the time a really marvelous label in terms of recording quality. Japan? Saw them live after the second album at the Whisky. Interviewed Vivabeat when Rob Dean was, briefly, on the roster, and I wish WFMU would play more Vivabeat. But I never took to Sylvian's later career. What a curious time it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Sam Segal:

How was Japan live?
  11:18pm
Dean:

Sorry. Didn't mean to barf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Sam Segal:

You old punk, Dean!
  11:19pm
Dean:

They were great, but it was second and first album material. At the time it seemed they were toying with punk expectations. Thereafter, they got all Roxy Music, which seemed to me to be less daring.
Avatar 11:25pm

Crap, now I need to have my parents divorce, get remarried to someone else, acquire said step-brother through either marriage, and then get him drunk. So much work to do now, so much pressure!.
  11:25pm
Carmichael:

Thankfully I was too old for this music.

(I own cargo shorts, and don't mind a hacky sack, but no caps). (haven't worn shorts in over a year).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Sam Segal:

I also like a good hack now and then, NGH.
Avatar 11:32pm

I'm great at juggling a soccer ball forever, but, mediocre at hacky sack.
Avatar 11:32pm

Nice Ryley Walker!
  11:32pm
Dean:

Lillywhite? As in Steve Lillywhite? Talk about New Romantics! I remember buying "Hong Kong Garden" at a funky Melrose shop...Wacko, perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
coelacanth∅:

hey Sam & horsey people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Sam Segal:

As in Steve Lillywhite, Dean. Man, didn't even realize I'd looped back to that theme from earlier.

Howdy, Coel! Glad you're here (hear).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Actually, NGH, our plug-in menorah is plastic craft of the highest order. Creamy white with lots of faux drips and orange bulbs. I made a custom wood base painted green, gold and red. I need to move a ton of books, records and old income tax returns before I can get to it without breaking my neck. So maybe it won't see a live socket this year after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
coelacanth∅:

hear hear
glad to hear this here. the beginning - the actual Dave Matthews song, was as Dave Matthews is for me... eh. (or "meh" if you prefer)

-but the 2nd 1/2 was excellent. i like this Virginia Sook too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Sam Segal:

Yeah, I am partial to the improv section as well, Coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
coelacanth∅:

it's weird with Matthews...i've never hated anything i've heard from him, but also never been even slightly moved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Sam Segal:

Same...he never seemed to deserve being as much of a punchline as he is, though...
  11:46pm
Carmichael:

I have a plug-in Christmas tree. I refuse to kill something for the joyous season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
coelacanth∅:

agreed,Sam. anyway i know at least one person who is very moved by him, so -to each his (her) own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
chresti:

I'm not familiar with Mathews
  11:53pm
Carmichael:

He is creamy peanut butter on the store shelf. Tastes good, but many other similar choices.
  11:54pm
Dean:

Is John Mayer Dave Matthews-esque? I'd say so. How'd that guy end up getting Dead credit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
coelacanth∅:

mmm peanut butter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Franco Twinkie:

I haven't a clue what Dave Matthews did or does. Why did he attract so much scorn?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Sam Segal:

I think many Deadheads think John Mayer can do a pretty good Jerry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
coelacanth∅:

...but do people really buy the creamy?!
  11:56pm
Dean:

That makes me sad. "A pretty good Jerry." Damn, is this what we've come to?
  11:57pm
Dean:

[Full disclosure: I attended every single Grateful Dead show ever.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Sam Segal:

Sure is, Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
coelacanth∅:

he wrote what could be, in someone else's hands, a good song about water pollution. that song got me to buy the cd in the 90s, when i saw it for 3 bucks. but it's just too boring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
coelacanth∅:

(Dave Mathews, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
Franco Twinkie:

Since I'm fat and hairy people think I do a pretty good Jerry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
coelacanth∅:

i starred that panchasila song, but i now realise i have that album, bought from bandcamp i guess before they got a label?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am
coelacanth∅:

Thanks Sam! good night folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am
