Afternoon, Julie and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm coelacanth∅:

i Love this song

greetings Julie and james and potential others
Avatar 12:02pm Sem:

Hello, Julie, ljfw. And a merry darkmass to you as well.
Avatar 12:03pm Sem:

...and coel, as in "...of approval."
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Julie:

hey folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm coelacanth∅:

is it a good hair day?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Julie:

Not for Galt, it isn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm coelacanth∅:

oh shit Galt McDermot died?

rest in peace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm coelacanth∅:

(...i guess it's a bad hair day)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

Was allowed to listen to this cast album at a really young age, so these tracks are in my DNA. Vocabulary expander in spots, maybe more than was fitting for most grade schoolers.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Julie:

although it's never a bad day for this music really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm coelacanth∅:

...sorry. lots of lag time today. comments passing in the dark night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm coelacanth∅:

i listen to (almost) the entire hair soundtrack through about every 2-3 years. since i was a child. (some songs more often)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm coelacanth∅:

...and i generally loathe show/musical music.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Julie:

Hair is different!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm listener james from westwood:

Paul! Hope the LL show was a blast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm coelacanth∅:

james, i guess my parents went to the show, then my father bought the st album when it came out. played it for the whole family and of course at several points my mother objected; but enlightenment prevailed.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Julie:

it was! He was at the show just before the one I went to. I saw him on his way out. But my friends in the show were super thrilled to meet him.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, wow, how cool that he was there!!
Avatar 12:16pm Parq:

Ah, it *is* DNotS Day. I couldn't remember for sure.
Avatar 12:16pm Parq:

This Donovan record is making me blush.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm listener james from westwood:

Holy crow, mini-Bjork!
Avatar 12:18pm Parq:

So many Hair songs were pop hits that I felt I had heard the score even when I hadn't. In fact, that was probably the last Broadway musical to produce multiple pop hits. After that it was the same "one track only" mentality as albums.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Julie:

yeah the donovan song gets a bit racy!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Julie:

hiya Parq!
Avatar 12:19pm Parq:

Julie, Mrs. Parq and I are seeing the Thursday late-evening Aretha show. See you there, maybe?
  12:20pm johnk77:

RIP Galt:<
always a nice guy
mild-mannered and pro
in rehearsals
Avatar 12:23pm Listening Out There:

I was convinced Bjork at 11 was a young Japanese child...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Julie:

speaking of Aretha, Meredith Ochs has written a book about her
Avatar 12:34pm Scraps:

In fact, though it’s true that they don’t do much pop hits from Broadway shows now, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” by Yvonne Elliman from J.C. Superstar was a hit
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Julie:

but that was from the film I don't know if she recorded it outside of that
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Julie:

you'd think we'd be hearing Hamilton on the radio or something, not that I even know what happens on commercial radio really
Avatar 12:37pm Scraps:

Sorry, I though you were counting that. Never mind
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Julie:

oh it counts... but I was wondering about pop stars recording Bway songs too like happened with Hair
Avatar 12:41pm Parq:

Just as a technical point, Ellman's "Don't Know" wasn't from the movie *or* the Broadway show. It was the original version recorded for the 1971 (or so) album, which was a stand alone project that morphed into other media only later.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Julie:

oh really? Interesting! I used to use it as an audition song. very popular.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

Yay, Cure!
Avatar 12:44pm egal:

HOF Cure.
Avatar 12:48pm Parq:

Yeah, the lack of Hamilton songs on the radio is, I think, a reflection of how the new generation of theater-goers consume music. I'm betting that the labels assume the show's songs to be playing on Spotify and being downloaded and such. "Weird" Al Yankovic's "Hamilton Polka" is the closest it's come to radio play.
  12:55pm Derek D.:

Thank you for this lovely tribute to Stirling, Julie.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Julie:

YVW. I need to dig a bit deeper, but of course I had to play some Auto Bonfire.

yes. we're not asleep, just distracted.
Avatar 1:49pm Listening Out There:

"Stay out of the hospital in 2019" is a good resolution, I'd say. Consider our healthcare system in the U.S...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

Still indeed here! Always lovely hearing Black Tape. I think of Lisa Feuer from that group/label now and again. She got randomly interviewed in the NYT during the Great Recession as an example of how folks were faring while changing careers and life circumstances.
Avatar 1:50pm sispus:

buu şarkııı!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm northguineahills:

Picking the best show on WFMU would be impossible for me, even given Sophie's Choice....(If I'm here, hearing, then it's a fave).
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Julie:

@sispus was that peekaboo in Turkish? It came up during the turkish song.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:09pm listener james from westwood:

No mistaking Gerrard!

Still can always use the Smiths....
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm listener james from westwood:

LOL, was sitting here thinking, isn't this the Kylie track—yes!!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm listener james from westwood:

A friend recently made me a Spotify mix with amped-up covers of "Enjoy the Silence" (by This Mortal Coil) and "The Model" (by Rammstein) and I was likewise in bliss.

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Julie:

so this apparently is a Wham song??
Avatar 3:20pm Sem:

"December Will Be Magic Again" was written and originally recorded in 1979 at Abbey Road Studio 2 London with Preston Heyman on drums, sleigh bells and maracas, Alan Murphy on guitar, Kuma Harada on bass and Kate herself on piano, but not released until the Christmas season of the next year on 17 November 1980. via wikithingy

No mention of Wham, or Wham-o.

Thank you, Julie. See you next week!

thank you Julie. have a great Christmas!
