Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Orquesta Akokán is a blazing Afro-Cuban band. They revitalize Cuba's classic mid-century big band mambo sound.

Barely a year old, Akokán has already been chosen to play the prestigious globalFEST World Music showcase, Sun. Jan. 6 at the Copacabana in Times Square. And their self-titled debut album on Daptone Records has been nominated for a Grammy!

Meet Akokán's dynamic singer José “Pepito” Gómez and composer / producer / multi-instrumentalist Jacob Plasse on our show this week.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Phillio:

Rob! Thank you for turning us on to Orquestra Akokan! I'm really only familiar with Cachao early 60s stuff, so it's great to hear something new like this that keeps that old salsa spirit going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Rob W:

Thanks Phillio!
  7:39pm Pedro in Arlington:

Next Saturday at the Kennedy Center for FREE. Pays to listen to WFMU down here. Great show Rob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Rob W:

Sure thing Pedro, that's right, Orq. Akokan is playing at the Kennedy Center for free a week from tonight, Sat. Jan 5. The Kennedy Center has great free shows almost every night on their Millenium Stage - very eclectic booking - check out www.kennedy-center.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Rob W:

By the way, for folks outside the DC area - those free Kennedy Center Millenium Stage shows video-stream and can be watched as on-demand video too - check out recent video archives at www.kennedy-center.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Phillio:

Oh, nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Phillio:

I almost wonder if they'll remove the seats at Kennedy Center to accommodate folk's urge to dance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Rob W:

Actually Phillio the Millenium Stage is separate from the main hall - it's basically in the public area of the Kennedy Center - so they can move chairs in and out. I think they can set it up with a dance floor for shows like this.
