@glenn: thanks for that link! I remember that when I first saw her, in the basement of a bar in the suburbs of Paris, she did a wonderful reverb-soaked cover of a Springsteen song. She did it the right way, and that article tells why
Avatar 12:28pm
glenn:

i kinda like the pictorial aspect of it. it tells a lot about an artist. they all seem to be obsessive collectors.
Avatar 12:38pm

According to discogs, Mina (on now) has recorded 110 albums! Finally, a rival to Sun Ra.

Happy new year Tony.
Hi Glenn, I live in the west end of Toronto too!

Is Queen St. in Toronto still lined with records stores? It was the last time I was there, around 2000.
Avatar 12:48pm
glenn:

hmmmm. there might still be a couple, but definitely not like it was.
Avatar 12:48pm
Erella:

We just got a new record store on Roncesvalles (west part of toronto) where they sell mainly amazing, Sun Ra, punk bands, Lulu vinyl. I understand they will eventually have cds and books but their prices and stock is great.

Queen Street is mainly bars and coffeeshops now. (How many does a city need?). We still have some incredible record stores though and new ones are opening (surprisingly enough).

Happy New Year, all. I actually stayed awake past midnight last night to text my son, who is visiting Portland.

Here in Portland, this New Year's Eve was super-quiet, explosion-wise. Don't remember it being as quiet before.

It didn't even disturb our cat's napping.

I don't even know how it went. I had a cold so I didn't go out and was asleep by ten. I guess I'm officially old

Gonna make black eyed peas today, but I have only one Black Eyed Peas record to accompany the slow simmer. Too bad there's not a band called Lobster Bisque.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
david w:

Behrman! A national treasure. And Kosugi, mmm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
fred:

A random thought: I saw Hofesh Schechter's show called "Show" again this week (I know, that's awkward). I highly recommend it. The ending is manipulative, but probably, possibly in a good way, with what's going on before
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
chresti:

The Black Eyed Peas had a studio, down the alley from mine, I would wave at one of them when he was riding his moped up the alley, around '99
Avatar 1:53pm
glenn:

geeez. i'm kinda disappointed that there's no band named lobster bisque. it seems like a natural.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
fred:

@glenn: now you know your next band's name
Avatar 1:57pm
glenn:

hell, i've got so many great band names, and so little talent...
Avatar 1:58pm
Tony Coulter:

The stupidest band name I've encountered recently: Leftover Salmon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
fred:

It's 2018 man, who cares about talent?
Avatar 2:00pm
glenn:

plus i've got olympic class tinnitus already.
  2:00pm
Dean:

I was thinking of Leftover Salmon just this morning! Used to hear them Friday nights on KPFK, Thursday Lunch, a show devoted to the Dead and Dead-like bands. Used to play a lot of String Cheese Incident, too. Another dumb band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
fred:

I like this Karel Goeyvaerts track a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm

Avatar 2:06pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Hot Sauce!
  2:07pm
Dean:

The Goeyvaerts reminds me of works by Toyohiko Satoh, an early music lutenist who also composes his own works to be performed by an early music ensemble.
  2:08pm
Dean:

E.g., https://www.channelclassics.com/catalogue/3291-Works-of-Toyohiko-Satoh/
Avatar 2:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, this Goeyvaerts sounds a bit like an early music take on minimalism. Are there crumhorns in there, I wonder?
  2:10pm
Dean:

That little five note ostinato...crumhorn, no?
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

I think so, yes.
Avatar 2:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Tho there are other similar-sounding instruments. My introduction to the crumhorn was the band Gryphon.
Avatar 2:12pm
glenn:

crumhorn no is definitely good new band name.
  2:13pm
Dean:

Gryphon, of course. Me, too, except for this album:

https://www.discogs.com/Tieleman-Susato-Pierre-Phalèse-Ensemble-Musica-Aurea-Dances-Of-The-Renaissance/master/492346

...which I acquired well before hearing Gryphon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
fred:

@glenn: at some point you should stop collecting band names and get one going
  2:14pm
H.S.:

Gryphon opened for the Yes-Relayer tour.
  2:17pm
Dean:

Not in these parts, H.S., alas. I don't even remember who opened that show, though I attended a stadium festival. Opening bands were, in order, Gentle Giant, Gary Wright, and Peter Frampton. In 1976, I a-l-m-o-s-t heard Gryphon at a club in London, but the group with which I was traveling left town that night. Servers at the hotel restaurant offered to take me to the show (50p admission), thence to Stratford, where the group was heading, but I chickened out.
  2:22pm
H.S.:

This was in Texas. They played Red Queen to Gryphon Three. Great Concert.
