Uncle Michael:

Agree completely about Aretha's Columbia stuff. The conventional wisdom is more or less correct but she was way too good to be stifled. Sure, she recorded some inappropriate repertoire at Columbia but even some of that is kind of great. Yes, she was paired with more sympathetic musicians and producers at Atlantic...and she wouldn't mean as much without Atlantic...but really listening to the Columbia catalog provides a wealth of pleasures and a few revelations.

Aretha's musical rebirth at Atlantic is a little like when Ray Charles stopped trying to sound like Nat Cole. That said, I like that early Ray Charles stuff. It's not what makes him an important figure...but the records are still good.

Kris Holmes:

Yep, some of Aretha's best jazz sides are on Columbia, as well as her toughest R&B.

Kris Holmes:

Also agree the early Ray Charles stuff is just fine

I better push the keyboard back. Tomorrow is going to be a real adjustment and the day starts early. Thanks for the music, Kris. Happy New Year to you and yours.

Not often you hear some Tx. two step and La. aldus roger in the same show. Keep up the good work, people are silently listening.
