I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Helium skull? Don't let go!
Avatar 10:56am Mayuko:

Celebrating 2019 with the spirit of Zen Master Ikkyu who visited door to door with a human skull on a pike for New Year's Greetings! I'd think people have stopped inviting him to any new years party since, but I hope you do enjoy my Ikkyu-ish new year's party aka 1st radio show of the year today!
Avatar 10:57am Mayuko:

@Jack I think he had to let it go since zen masters seem to be always about letting things go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jack Tourette:

Oh yeah, no attachments. Happy new year!
Avatar 11:17am Mayuko:

Happy new year to you too, Jack!!!!!
Avatar 11:32am fred:

Happy new year Mayuko and listenerds!

Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

@rbrt He's pretty bad, but that's ok many people like him too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Webhamster Henry:

Now I have to remember where I put that Human Skull!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm listener james from westwood:

Happy New Year, Mayuko and all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Webhamster Henry:

I have two of my wisdom teeth - do they count?
Avatar 12:08pm Mayuko:

@Sem I seem to remember that there was one time he was drunk he slept using either a budda statue or mokugyo (a wooden percussion used for chanting) as his pillow. Though I might remember it wrong. Maybe he was sober and just wanted to take a nap.
  12:09pm rw:

Good morning! Happy '19!
Avatar 12:10pm Mayuko:

And I think it wasn't even HIS mokugyo but at someone else's temple.

Happy New Year, Mayuko and vertighosts! Is this the same Ikkyu-san as the cartoon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm listener james from westwood:

@Dave in Vermont, I lost a vote on what radio station to play many years ago; hope your coworkers are far kinder to FMU than mine was! (I now work from home and blast crying bamboo and sparrow tongues with gusto!)
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

@Dave in Vermont Thanks for tuning in! WFMU is not known for being neighbors-colleagues-friendly, but I hope you can stay with us!!!!!!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

hello, all! enjoying this, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hey, I'm still going to try to record an experimental birthday song before next Saturday even though things have been crazy here. Spent 3 days in the hospital last weekend with my daughter. 2018 managed to go out with a bang, and not in a good way.
  12:24pm P-90:

First new adjective of 2019: “Ikkyu-ish”
Avatar 12:25pm fred:

@Dropof Goldensun: Are you getting all the info you need about her treatment going forward? I wondered whether the shutdown could have affected that
  12:26pm Johnzon:

the tag line of the (commercial) radio station they play at my work is "nobody plays more 80's"
could be worse... Id put in a vote for fmu but it's not a democracy or pretending to be. I suggested the idea of making store mix tapes... possibly if I actually made one my boss would let me play it but Im not that motivated... the 80's music is ok what really bothers me are the ads particularly the campaign ads and the home depot ads(I work at an Ace so I find that particularly annoying) Id be really curious to see how people would react to this chanting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Dropof Goldensun:

@fred - Yes I have been very involved with everything. What do you mean by "the shutdown affecting that"?
Avatar 12:30pm fred:

@Dropof Goldensun: I was afraid you might run into some additional bureaucratic hassles while some agencies were shutting down
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

So happy to have YOU here, Doug! And Granny Spicy Tuna!! Thank you for tuning in!!!!
  12:31pm Joe B:

I've been lucky. For the most part, my workplace has had sort of an unspoken WFMU-only policy over the years. I'm so used to it being on that it's like another way of telling time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Dropof Goldensun:

@fred - oh... no, no issues with the stupid government shutdown. Nothing government related with this thankfully.
  12:32pm rbrt:

dancin on my sofa ♡♡
Avatar 12:33pm david w:

Hello Mayuko and all... best year to you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm chresti:

Happy New Year, Mayuko!
Avatar 12:34pm fred:

@Joe B: is your workplace hiring?
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

@Johnzon I would love it if they be "nobody plays more 80's" and then start with einstürzende neubauten and SPK and Whitehouse etc That's very 80's, too.
  12:34pm rbrt:

♡ Chris Lynn's bells and birds too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm chresti:

Very happy to have today off. so I can listen at home!
  12:35pm Johnzon:

lol thanks Ill check those out!
Avatar 12:36pm Mayuko:

Oh my god, Dropof. I'm so sorry that 2019 has had such rough start! Hopefully things will go only better from here on!!!!!!
Avatar 12:38pm fred:

Didn't Merzbow start out in the 80's too? Someone posted a comment a few days ago saying he wished Merzbow would play the superbowl halftime show. Now that would be something
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

@Joe B And your workplace is not you, and you and you and you, kinda like my workplace just me and me and me and therefore everyone likes WFMU?! (aka freelance) You should keep that job forever!!!!!!!!
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

david W!!!!!!! Happy new year and glad to hav eyou here!!!!!!!
Avatar 12:43pm Mayuko:

@fred yes I'd say Merzbow totally should be played on this "Can't-be-more 80's" radio station. There has to be so much noise on this station if they claim it to be so 80's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Dropof Goldensun:

Thank you Mayuko. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes so there wasn't any warning signs. It's a lot to suddenly take it but she has a great support team. We're going to make sure she will be well prepared with this lifelong lifestyle change.
Avatar 12:47pm fred:

@Mayuko: they should definitely add Hijokaidan and Incapacitants to the playlist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Dropof Goldensun:

Loving this Coverdale track!
  12:50pm Johnzon:

unfortunately it's "nobody plays more 80's"(top 40 shlock) not "nobody plays more obscure 80's artsy noise" but yea... just goes to show you fmu is one of the few oasis of musical sanity in the desert of American radio...
  12:50pm Joe B:

@Fred Unfortunately no, but if I could I would hire you on principle! @Mayuko It's a pretty small workplace, but not just me. My job was actually how I discovered wfmu.
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

@Dropof I wish her all the good luck. It's not easy for anyone let alone kids. Though kids can be surprisingly resilient too.
Avatar 12:55pm Mayuko:

@Johnzon Blixa had almost an idol-kind of popularity in Japan those days though! I guess because he's handsome and also good at cooking risotto.
Avatar 12:56pm fred:

@JoeB: It' OK, I can't complain as I have some fine weirdos as loosely-defined coworkers (we just work in the same place, not together). I find contemporary music composers are a lot like noise musicians: usually weird, and most are also very nice people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - Thank you again. :) It comes with no surprise that she is handling it much better than I would. She's much stronger than me.
  12:57pm rw:

Checking back in... Dropof, sorry about the diagnosis. Sounds like she's going to be fine with you and her support team. Good luck with it!
  12:57pm Joe B:

@Dropof Sounds like she has great parents supporting her!
  12:57pm Ivan:

Happy new year everybody! I’m walking in a snowy forest right now, and the music fits perfectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Dropof Goldensun:

Thank you rw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Webhamster Henry:

Happy New Week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Joe B - God knows how that happened!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm chresti:

I think you can say Happy New Year all January

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm listener james from westwood:

Breaking the rules left and right is, indeed, iconoclastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm chresti:

His behavior fits iconoclast
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Dropof Goldensun:

Ikkyu sounds like my kind of guy!
Avatar 1:04pm fred:

probably "Exhortation" instead of "Exhortaion"
  1:04pm Joe B:

Avatar 1:08pm fred:

No way is Ikkyu your grandfather, you're much too young
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm chresti:

I only know about my grandparents from my parent's stories. I have an uncle that is Hungarian Jew (my mother's sister's husband), that escaped a nazi camp with his mother during wwII
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Dave Sewelson:

You said it right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Dave Sewelson:

Jazz, an under-served area in the FMUniverse
Avatar 1:16pm fred:

@P-90: Well, there's D:O Radio, also on the drummer stream
  1:17pm rbrt:

I always love Villalobos remixes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm chresti:

If that stick was willow or bamboo, and the skull is very old, it could be possible to carry it around that way.
  1:18pm JakeGould:

@fred: “Destination: Out” is pretty good jazz-wise. But most people don’t know or can’t keep track of the alternate stream shows. Heck, I can barely keep track of the shows across all of the streams or what the streams contain.

So WFMU is still really just a rock station to me. If I need jazz on the radio there are other stations I turn to.

Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

Stay tuned for the very first (though pre-official) episode of Music For a Free World!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:19pm JakeGould:

Oooo… Good to know!
Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

Great we can keep saying happy new year for a while!
Happy new year, Ivan! Snowy forest sounds lovely!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm chresti:

Today's my last vacation day. I'll be at work tomorrow during D:O, listening via itunes.
Avatar 1:20pm Mayuko:

@Robert Tables 明けましておめでとう!!!!!!!今年もよろしく!!!!!!!!
  1:21pm rw:

Joe B! How's it going? Forgot to say hello earlier.
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

Thanks everyone! I feel accomplished that I was explaining iconoclastic correctly!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm chresti:

I am looking forward to the new show!
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@fred I see my own typo was giving myself that hard time! Fixed, thanks!!!!
Avatar 1:23pm fred:

@JakeGould: It's a whatever station to me (with a nod to Mary Wing) and I love it for it, but I agree it's a great one. As long as it remains afloat, we'll both be good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm chresti:

It sounds like Ikku was also idiosyncratic...
Avatar 1:24pm david w:

Yes! Sewelson's show will represent for jazz, but I expect more Charles Mingus than Herbie Mann.
  1:24pm JakeGould:

@fred: I don’t know what we’re agreeing to, but I think there’s too much rock on the main station. But that is all I will say.
Avatar 1:25pm fred:

@Mayuko: it's actually your struggling that made me notice the typo
Avatar 1:26pm Mayuko:

@chresti Uncles count!!! That's already super intriguing (if I can use that word for escaping a nazi camp.)
Avatar 1:27pm Mayuko:

Welcome x 100000 Dave!!!!!!!!!! I'm relieved I didn't fail your name pronunciation right from the beginning!
  1:27pm Joe B:

@rw Good to find you here again. Happy New Year!
I'm doing well!
Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

@P-90 Our man Jeff G has been defending that territory from shrinking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm chresti:

What I love about this station: I hear things that are new to my ears that I like.
  1:31pm rw:

Mayuko, you may have a bit of an iconoclastic streak yourself. Probably most everyone here too.

chresti, I was talking with a friend a while ago and he said he thinks most people listen to the radio to hear things they know but others listen to hear things they don't know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm chresti:

Mayuko- he liked to draw and paint, so he was useful and befriended by one of the officers...something like that, he'd make signs for them
  1:32pm rw:

And Happy New Year Joe! Hope we get out to see you guys at some point soon!
  1:33pm rw:

chresti, sounds like you've got a framework for your next artwork.
Avatar 1:35pm Mayuko:

Hey Jake!!!!!! Happy new year!
Avatar 1:35pm fred:

@JakeGould: OK, I don't know either, I was just foolishly trying to play nice. Can we just ignore each other in the future?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm chresti:

I vaguely remember going to Thanksgivings hosted by his mother, when we still lived in Illinois, (I was 7 when we moved to California)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm chresti:

rw-art saves lives, literally!
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

@chresti ah that makes sense re: stick the skull might have lost the density by then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm doctorjazz:

Hello Mayuko and listeners!
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

@rbrt belated but hard agree with Villalobos comment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm doctorjazz:

Like this Anthony Child track
  1:37pm Joe B:

@rw Yeah! And to your point about listening to the radio -- with youtube and spotify, it's so easy for people to just put on stuff they know and let the algorithms kick in to tell them what to listen to next. I'd much rather have a human guide to the unknown corners of the musical universe, like Mayuko and the other DJs here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Agree with doctorjazz. This is cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm chresti:

Haha fred!
Avatar 1:41pm fred:

@rw: I usually put it this way: I listen to WFMU to like what I hear, not to hear what I like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm chresti:

@rw music also is a life saver!
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in, doctorjazz!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Dave Sewelson:

Don't let a robot choose your music. Let Mayuko...
Avatar 1:42pm david w:

Good one, Fred. FMU should bottle that quote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm chresti:

My ears are putty in Mayuko's hands...
  1:44pm rw:

Not to change the subject or anything but when did the pronunciation of the word robot shift from Ro-but to Ro-bot? Around the time television changed to color? It's been an ongoing discussion at work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of anti-robots, the estimable Dave Sewelson joins the Drummer Stream today with a preview broadcast of MUSIC FOR A FREE WORLD! This show will take up residence on Saturday afternoons, immediately following Mayuko and Play Vertigo. MUSIC FOR A FREE WORLD will present preview shows today and next week, then it officially debut on January 26!

@chresti it's truly intriguing to hear what kind of skills end up saving one life, happens with immigrants' stories too I think. You can never predict things like that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm chresti:

How's the bug, Doug?
  1:51pm Joe B:

@rw that's so weird, yesterday my coworkers and I were joking about the same thing. Robutts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm chresti:

@rw, I like ro-butt, rolls off the tongue..
  1:53pm rw:

Joe, you know what they say about great minds...

chresti, let's bring it back. Maybe if we can figure out a way to switch TV back to B&W.

And thank you once again Mayuko! Always a pleasure. Take care Iconoclastic Vertiginoids. Pleasure hanging with y'all. Have a great weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Webhamster Henry:

in R.U.R., which is in Czech, it was coined as "roboti" - something closer to "rowboat". They were actually artificially manufactured and assembled (meat) humans, not mechanical.

I've never said it as "RoButt".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Doug Schulkind:

I am easing back into solid food. Saltines are (so far) my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the show today, Mayuko, and welcome to new radio neighbor Dave Sewelson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm chresti:

I didn't see a color TV until I moved away from home...

Interesting, Webhamster...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm chresti:

@Doug-glad to hear that
  1:58pm Joe B:

Sounds like a fireplace is crackling and popping behind you, Mayuko. Not bad for a rather chilly day in LA. Thanks again for another great show! See everyone next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Dropof Goldensun:

Great show Mayuko! Thanks for being on here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Webhamster Henry:
