This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

Weirdly can't find any info on these Belita Palma recordings, despite her status as one of the most iconic Angolan singers. From here: freedomspear.blogspot.com...
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

November 11 1975 = Angolan independence

Belita Palma also the singer for N'Gola Ritmos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Requesting entry from Papan Legba.

Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

I need more Tiger recordings, he's incredible
  7:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Bug’s beating me, but we’re still in the early rounds.

That is great news! what a cool show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Heh, thanks. I haven't eaten solid food since Sunday. Going to attempt a few bites of banana in a bit. Wish me luck.
Avatar 8:11pm quinn:

Since Sunday! Oh no! Feel better, Doug.
Avatar 8:11pm quinn:

And hi, I'm here. New year, new patterns to put into repeat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, Quinn. I would hate to see the stomach bug I've got under a microscope. Probably one of those terrifying prehistoric-like monsters.
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

Hi Quinn! wonderful, splendid to see you

happy new year!
Avatar 8:13pm coelacanth∅:

oh man. Good Luck Doug.
i know for myself if getting food in or keeping it there is an issue it's either miso soup; warm ginger/licorice tea with honey; or lemon-ginger-echinacea juice that breaks it...in all cases taken in minute sips at first with breaks in between.
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

@doug: i got food poisoning right before leaving for France, and spent the first few days of the tour just eating bananas and trying not to look too insane
Avatar 8:14pm hyde:

@Doug oh, that's rough. best wishes
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

so i know that banana game, i meant to say
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

Yoruba chorus' work on Ochun is exquisite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm melinda:

Stomach bugs are the worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm melinda:

I usually make egg drop soup when I'm queasy.
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

this record always strikes me initially as being a little too formal, precise, but it does have its charms and always wins me at least most of the way over
Avatar 8:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey Flash!
Avatar 8:27pm coelacanth∅:

i can see how bananas might work for breaking that. i just usually don't have bananas around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm passiflora:

I've been fortunate in that regard. I don't recall ever having a stomach bug
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

hey Franco! how goes it up there
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

hi passiflora with the iron stomach
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm passiflora:

spirits are another story
Avatar 8:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Great! I was just record shopping in the Haight.
  8:30pm chresti:

Apples, too, for the runs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm passiflora:

Aquarius isn't there anymore, is it? I used to visit that website so much
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

Sounds cool as hell, Franco
Avatar 8:31pm hyde:

@passiflora me too! i miss their year end lists
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm passiflora:

yes, me too!
Avatar 8:33pm coelacanth∅:

i think i've had food poisoning once, full on, when i was about 20, and once very mildly. i've had a hangover probably 10 X that kept me from consuming anything for a day. i don't think i've ever had a "stomach bug".
Avatar 8:34pm quinn:

it's stomach bug season. it struck me and both of my kids at the same time a couple weeks ago. that was kewl
Avatar 8:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Cool as hell, yes. But now I'm inside and need to warm up with some soup, kick back and listen to these mad voodoo spells your casting.
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

btw way folks, some station news – new show on the stream after Mayuko this Saturday (doing a soft-launch before officially kicking off Jan. 26)! Dave Sewelson, Music for the Free World

check it out!
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

@Quinn: very nice, yes, extremely cool
Avatar 8:36pm coelacanth∅:

oh no quinn! that sound like one of those fun houses that aren't really fun.
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

warm up and get mad Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm passiflora:

Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

Toto Bissainthe is so brilliant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm passiflora:

it's perfect & feels close to the ground
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

re: Toto B. : such a grand example of someone using both Vodou traditions and contemporary expressions to make powerful, vital diaspora music
Avatar 8:58pm quinn:

ooh i really like this one
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

me too quinn!
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

defnitely grew up listening to Jimmy Cliff's version on my dad's cassette of Give Thankx
  9:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Nyabinghi Love!
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

(which Ras Michael & the Sons of Negus plays on, actually - Ras Michael being hugely influenced by this record)
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

@doug: you know it! get ready
Avatar 9:09pm northguineahills:

Hi/bye Evan, nice stuff!
Avatar 9:10pm quinn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

yesssssss doctor
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

it's very cool
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

hi and bye NGH, have a great one
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

restful sleep and all good things to you quinn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm doctorjazz:

BIG BIG FAN! Seen them many many times ! Seen him in a Trio setting! Has one of the world's best beards!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm chresti:

Great show! Love this Grounation track, uncharted territory for me mostly, Rastafarian drumming and chanting
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

this is sort of the foundation of all Nyabinghi to follow - Ossie's influence is inestimable. and Cedric Im Brooks' sax is fascinating, with really unique jazz elements
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm chresti:

Ras Michael and the sons of Negus, I've heard before slightly
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

@Doc: that's so cool, had no idea about the beard. sounds like you betta not miss that show this saturday
  9:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Holy holy, Flash.
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

yeah this record is a church on three discs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm chresti:

I have a friend who briefly embraced aspects of Rastafari, the dancing part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm chresti:

Not the "woman follow man" part, that's where she drew the line...
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

yeah for sure, there's a little of a lot too much of that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm doctorjazz:

That should show a bid of his bearded majesty
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

that's also a very majestic baritone sax
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm doctorjazz:

The most Majestic! He's a hoot live (sings too)
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

I confess to having none of your familiarity, you're getting me more excited than I already was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm chresti:

Wow! He's in Oakland.@ majestic hoot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm doctorjazz:

Comes from my younger days as a Microscopic Septet groupie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm chresti:

Yet another frontier to explore!
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

I guess he had a show on Little Walter Radio, which just went defunct, so the Drummer Stream is fortunate to give his show a new home
Avatar 9:40pm hyde:

@Flash ooh, just catching up. will listen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm chresti:

We'll be at home and plugged in for sure. Sorry about your bug, Doug.
  9:41pm Doug Schulkind:

May this go on forever. Please?
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

listen to Cedric Im Brooks on this record, you hear a guy on a whole other level, at the edge of something truly new I think
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

I wish Doug!
  9:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi chresti. My bug says hi, too.
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

you line this 3xLP up with his other great album, Tales of Mozambique, that's the better part of day, if not forever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm chresti:

There was a Soul Vendors live album at Groove Merchant, on Studio One, for 10 dollars.
To Doug's Bug: Time to stop bugging Doug!
Avatar 9:46pm Flash Strap:

returning to Africa, and unexpected / unique Cuban cross-pollinations (based on solidarity in revolution among other things), we have one of the GREATEST bands:
Avatar 9:46pm Flash Strap:

yeah set my man's tummy free over here he has radio to do
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

and dinners to eat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Jeff Golick:

Hi. Have been quietly listening and immensely enjoying. An impossible act to follow, but I will try, over here: wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

Hi Jeff! It'll be a pleasure to turn things over to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm doctorjazz:

OK, time to head home (really late, really beat)
Thanks for the great music, Evan!
Avatar 9:54pm hyde:

this stuff is really dreamy
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

safe travels and thanks for hangin' out Doc
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

I once read someone describe the guitarist's style as "stars spread across the sky"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm chresti:

Lovely show, thanks Flash!
Avatar 9:57pm hyde:

  9:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Sublime beyond wor(l)ds.
