A new head cold and a new 5-year old. We're listening in. Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Sem:

Hello, is this the right chat board for an argument?

Greets, Doug, and all inclined to give the drummer some, and then, some more.

Stanley, thanks to you 'cocorico" is a deeply embedded earworm.

I'm down with GST!

Way to make an entrance, Stanley!

Present! Love the Certain Blacks album.
  9:25am Mark R:

Morning Doug! Nice Joseph Jarman tribute you have going here. Foortnote: I played "Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City" on the very first radio show I ever did, on WCBN in Ann Arbor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

And it loves you, Scott. As do we all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

You are a man of wealth and taste, Mark R! Well, a man of taste, certainly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Stanley:

@βrian: next door at our house in France had a rooster that went 'cocorico'.
Until he 'mysteriously' disappeared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

Chicago Beau and/or Julio Finn on harmonica here. Also heard on the phenomenal Archie Shepp/Philly Joe Jones LP on America.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Scott:

I have a soft spot for free jazz harmonica. Frank Lowe pulls it out sometimes, and I have a duo record where Charles Tyler plays harmonica.
  9:31am Mark R:

Wonder if Joseph and Anthony were having a poke at Dave Mason's "Alone Together" or was it just a coincidence?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

Franke Lowe on his "Fresh" album, yes, Scott?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

It would not surprise me in the least if Mr. Braxton was a big Dave Mason fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

Seriously.
  9:34am Jeff g.:

Greetings from Jamaica. Where there is snow on the ground. Much love for Jarman; Doug; and all listeners of distinction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

Love and hellos, Jeff G!
  9:35am Mark R:

There is snow on the ground in NJ, too. Although the big stuff is supposed to hit Saturday afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Sem:

Stanley, the other day when you wrote 'cocorico", I naturally ran the word through a translating service. Result: it means coconut, in Catalan.
Avatar 🥁 9:36am βrian:

I discovered that hens can learn to crow.
  9:37am Jeff Conklin:

Tuned in, perfect jams for this grey day. Rest in power, JJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Scott:

Does Lowe play harmonica on Fresh? I can't recall, but I know he plays it on that Out Loud set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

Respect, Avant Jeff Conklin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

@Scott
Just check the Fresh lineup. No harmonica in sight.
  9:49am Artie:

Nothing and everything that Mr. Braxton does or likes is yet another delightful surprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Another delightful surprise: Artie! (Not really a surprise.)
  9:51am Jeff Conklin:

Harmonica wouldn’t have at all been out of place on Chu’s Blues though! Love that record, gonna pull it out for later listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

The death of Christopher Gaddy, heard on marimba here, hit Jarman and his fellow Chicagoans hard. The next selection is "Song For Christopher."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am alanr:

Here is the link to some of the interview with Jarman that was included in "Inside Out In The Open." (wait until the program is over to watch it, please) youtu.be...

Thank you a million for programming this memorial, Doug.
Avatar 🥁 9:57am βrian:

Five-Year Old is having a little trouble with this music. I don't know *what* her problem is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

There is nothing else I could do, alanr.

I urge everyone to follow Alan's link to watch the brief filmed interview segment with Joseph Jarman. Then be sure to watch the entire film. It is extraordinary: www.insideoutintheopen.net
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
Tell your five-year-old that these guys were making music to bug grown-ups. Maybe she can connect via solidarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Scott:

Conklin, I heard there's a Mo' Jiggs free jazz record somewhere.

Furrowed brows: "Well ..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

Oh WOW, Alan. I didn't realize! The film is splendid and vital thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

@listener james from westwood
It is hard to imagine just how incredibly FUN it must have been—it must continue to be—to participate in such a collective creation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am alanr:

while that film is being screened in front of audiences more than ever this year (China, Portugal, and coming up Germany) it also needs to be available to a wider audience. It's a challenge to get social screenings!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Along with Christopher Gaddy, another performer from Jarman's "Song For" lineup passed away in 1967. Bassist Charles Clark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Scott:

Yeah Jeff, I swear I think Byron Coley told me that, but it's kinda fuzzy! Sorta makes sense tho.
Avatar 🥁 10:13am βrian:

Do I hear a zither?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@alanr
You must have it screened at City of Asylum here in Pittsburgh. An amazing space. I will hip you to this place. It is right in their wheelhouse.
  10:14am chresti:

Good morning some drum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, entire chresti!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Here is a remembrance of the wonderful Larayne Black I wrote back in 2008: blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Love hearing about those connections, @Doug. Just was reading about Thulani Davis, and learned that she is a cousin of composer/pianist Anthony Davis, with whom she's collaborated.
  10:29am Jessie:

I did not refuse! (to take the horn) I took it and kept it until I saw him again, or he came to collect it. (I think the party was at Laura's house). Funny, I think I never got to that point in the story, so you assumed a different ending.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

holland oats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

Holy moly! I thought you politely declined! Whenever I've asked you to tell that story, I think I got so overexcited, I forgot to hear the ending.

My apologies, darling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Breaking news, everyone. Jessie DID take Jarman's horn home with her! (OK, I'm getting overexcited again.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

William Parker is on bass here, with Frank Lowe. On January 26th, William Parker will be the first guest ever on the new Give the Drummer Radio broadcast, Music For a Free World with Dave Sewelson: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Scott McDowell:

Great ending to the story! : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jeff Golick:

Frank Lowe was not fooling around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

The violinist on this track, billed as "The Wizard," has long been misidentified as Leroy Jenkins. It is Raymond Lee Chang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

@Scott
I am more fascinated by the very likely possibility that it was my wife's friend's mother, Larayne Black, who first connected Jarman to Buddhism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Stanley:

Why do I like stuff like this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

I love listening to Jarman singing sweetly on his horn in the background here whilst Frank Lowe blows his beautiful brains out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Stanley:

Seriously, I love this but it's so wild.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
Because you are the proud owner of a human heart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Stanley:

You make me laugh, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

The pleasure is mine, Stanley!
  10:49am Mikey_B:

man this frank lowe track split my mind open. love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am fred:

Good morning Doug and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Mikey_B
The love is palpable. It's a song Jarman wrote for his then wife (the wonderful poet, writer, playwright, journalist) Thulani Davis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Almighty fred!
  10:57am Mikey_B:

didn't know that going in but the inspiration makes perfect sense. so much passion. didn't know much about jarman or the ensemble but this show will remedy my grievous miscalculation..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: it's correct on the playlist -- it IS AECO Recordings. I've been wondering about that last O recently, but that's apparently where it goes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

(No, I don't get out much, why do you ask.)
  11:02am holland oats:

last weekend's MFAFW beta-broadcast was fantastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
My mistake was my only mistake. Thanks for having my back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am fred:

I foolishly hoped I'd be able to listen to the whole show after dealing with a tax issue. Then a health insurance problem threw me hours off schedule. On a positive note, I follow closely the path of the Art Ensemble of Chicago box set slowly getting closer (maybe tomorrow, probably early next week)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

I have that beautiful box in my clutches, fred. It's a thing to be/hold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
It's only gonna get better and more better!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Jarman on baritone sax here. A treat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

Craig Harris on trombone here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Careful everyone. You know what happens when I make five comments in a row. You all owe me a back rub!

Ooops.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:19am dutchtheo:

Give the Drummer Some Shiatsu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Now you're talking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

Thurman Barker on drums here. We heard him at the top of the show playing on Jarman's earliest tracks from 1966.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Very thrilled and excited to learn recently that past AACM leader Nicole Mitchell is becoming the new head of the vaunted jazz program at the University of Pittsburgh. An inspired choice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am fred:

@Doug: do you think you could get her to make an appearance on your show? Interview, guest DJ, anything?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

I read it as LIFE LINE with ABC inserted in there.
  11:32am Dean:

Anagram for "beneficial"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:34am doctorjazz:

Late check in, but have been loving the sounds since the beginning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

Jeff Golick, I love you. Dean, you too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
That is a wonderful thought. I'm not sure that she has even arrived in town yet. I can put out feelers.
  11:37am Dean:

Olive you, too, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Geri Allen is playing piano and synth on this record. She had been the previous director of the jazz program at the University of Pittsburgh until her unexpected death in June of 2017.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you've been catching it, doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Sem:

Extraordinary morning of music, Doug, just the thing for those of us chained to a keyboard, or similar. Thank you for all of the Friday mornings.
p.s. I envy anyone's ability to put out feelers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

@Sem
Actually, I just open up the hatch and let the feelers go under their own free will.
Avatar 11:45am burke:

I ordered a set of feelers online. They're in the closet most of the time. But I've been known to put them out.
  11:45am Dean:

Myra Melford on this one, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Myra Melford on piano/harmonium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Oh boy! Jarman on oboe!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Sem, as a flaming giraffe, you have two excellent "feelers" on your head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

GTDS will be going about three minutes past noon today. Blessings upon Uncle Michael for letting me rupture the Hinky Dinky Time/Space Continuum.
  11:47am Dean:

Speaking of great musicians ensconced at research universities, she is Professor of Composition and Improvisational Practices here at Berkeley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

burke is here! burke is here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Sem:

Ossicones can be a hindrance as well, GST. But thanks for pointing out the upside!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Well, she appears to be trading the Berkeley Bowl for a place that puts fries and coleslaw on its sandwichdes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Jeff Golick:

...as any reasonable person would, @Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Am really enjoying this set, btw, of lesser-known-to-me Jarman.
  11:51am Dean:

Is she moving to Pittsburgh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Uncle Michael:

I'm loving this show. I could easily listen to 11 more minutes of this!
  11:53am Dean:

Anyway, Berkeley Bowl is pretty amazing in some respects. Produce, beer, beer, bulk foods, beer... Did I mention beer? Saw Justice Kavanaugh there a week or two ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Uncle Michael:

The, you know...my little thing:

www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am fred:

@Dean: a former coworker will be starting as assistant professor at CNMAT soon. They got a good one in my opinion, a composer, scientist, and developer (also a father of young kids, which redirected his multitasking some)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Yes, she is moving to Pittsburgh to become the new head of the Univ. of Pittsburgh's jazz program.
  11:54am Dean:

Oh, nice, fred! Name? Will look for announcements, lectures, events, etc.
  11:55am Dean:

Our loss, then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Happy to make you happy, Jeff Golick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Rich in Washington:

Wonderful show today, Doug! I've been too busy getting ready and commuting to work to commentify today, but finally landed, so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am fred:

@Dean: Carmine Emanuele Cella. Show up with a WFMU T-shirt, he's seen me wearing those so often it might right a bell (maybe not, he has a lot going on)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Along with Yosuke Yamashit, three old friends: Jarman/Malachi Favors/Don Moye.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:57am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

It's been my exceeding delight, Granny Spicy Tuna!
  11:59am Dean:

Thanks, fred. Will do!

I'm confused. Upthread reads, "Nicole Mitchell is becoming the new head of the vaunted jazz program at the University of Pittsburgh." Is Tiger Trio going to lead the program?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Jeff Golick:

Clicky-starred this whole ep a while back, but thanks for the whole enchilada, @Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Roscoe Mitchell here on alto. May God love and protect him.
