A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Hi all. Let yourself in and make yourself at home. Please let the cat in if you hear her scratching at the door.

Martinibomb:

My cat has been next to the speaker all day listening

I'm recovering from a flu shot this week that's knocked me for a loop. If I sound low energy and half dead, that's because I am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh. I made this show specifically for cats!
Hi Martinibomb! Thanks for tuning in!

Another quite thoroughly NON crappy show, Don-O.

RIGHT. The switch has been made!! Let 'er RIP, RIch!!

Oh shit! Yeah I fainted about 10mins after I got a flu shot back in October. Was not fun! Sorry Rich

Hi Otis! Your show was fun today!

yeesh, sorry to hear about what condition your condition is in, Rich. If you're too sick to do a show, it's not worth killing yourself over! (Well, unless it's a *really* good show...)

I need to do guest shows. My radio room's a bit cramped, though. But could add to the fun...

I have listened to WFMU now for 30 years. Every aspect of the station and substations are the best that radio has to offer.

Ive been in the radio biz for 44 years now. DJ everything from Commercial, college, pirate, internet (still) and this is the most eclectic and open minded station I have ever heard. Just clean, simple expression!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm

This was sort of hippie cult music made by ex-pat Americans in the UK in the early 80s.

The cover of this record is really funny. Not sure if he was serious or not. Sadly, my copy is in a generic sleeve but I'm on the prowl for a less hammered copy with cover.

Okay, I'm up off the floor now, been staring at the celing with a cat on each side for over an hour. This Mort/Z album is so good.

Sorry if any of you are listening at work. That's just how we roll!

Otis, are you okay?
Avatar 7:29pm
Don-O:

Some one at the station is passing out there!
Avatar 7:29pm

It was good but the cats got up first and so we are listening and playing now watching the snow fall like crazy outside in Montreal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'm going to have to chill out with an environment record after "J" is done.
  7:30pm
Martinibomb:

My Parents would HATE Sheena's Jungle Room -- of that I am certain. I sometimes wonder if I got into odd ball music to annoy my parents. My dad literally told me once, "Why can't you listen to the same music as everyone else?" Lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Kat in Chicago:

We're supposed to be in blizzardland already but it hasn't hit yet.

Ha, I have that Sensous Woman album. really should digitize it, and chop out some samples. Goes well with all those Xavier Hollander samples Georgy was playing this past Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Rich in Washington:

i found this at a Salvation Army, of all places.
Avatar 7:31pm
Linda Lee:

frankly, hanging out with cats on a snowy night in Montreal sounds quite heavenly.
Avatar 7:31pm
Mr Fab:

This is another set that would go well in the planetarium up on the roof of Sheena's Jungle Room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Kat in Chicago:

Doesn't it LL? I have recently fallen in love with Montreal. Only been there in August though :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Rich in Washington:

My parents have never ever heard me do a show. I think they're scared because of the type of music I listened to as a teenager.
Avatar 7:33pm
Otis Fodder:

It so is. Food. Cats. Soft lighting. WFMU. And when I say, okay, let's go to bed, it's 2 cats and Otis with snow falling. The little things wash away all the other life stress and anxiety. :)
Avatar 7:33pm
Otis Fodder:

I adore Montreal. 10 years here now.
Avatar 7:33pm
Linda Lee:

i've never been, sorry to say. i'd best work on that.
Avatar 7:33pm
Otis Fodder:

Rich - That was a really great mix/set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Kat in Chicago:

I don't have the patience for Salvation Army digging any more, alas. Still have my fave find which was Jack Van Impe's "Marked For Death: Will America Survive?"
  7:34pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich same here also I think they are just completely uninterested. My Dad just likes the Eagles... period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Kat in Chicago:

That was a very cool set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Otis! That means a lot to me!
Avatar 7:35pm
Otis Fodder:

Oh god, the Van Impe records. Here too, I rarely go out to thrifts as it's time... but I vicariously live through friends who frequent often and once in a while I get the itch and go with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Rich in Washington:

been listening to lots of spacey music lately.. Mainly drawn back into it by Tangerine Dream's Phaedra, since my wife and I watched Bandersnatch, believe it or not.
Avatar 7:36pm
Otis Fodder:

Rich - I have the Z Mort record and used to have the Connie one and I always thought about doing that mix together and never did... so thank you for taking that off my mental plate fellow record nutter. :)
Avatar 7:36pm
Mr Fab:

ha, hey Kat, i chopped out a bunch of funny samples from a Jack Van Impe album for the Sheena stream! "From Nightclubs to Christ." Him ranting about commies trying to infect us with homosexuality and rock n roll music.
Avatar 7:37pm
Otis Fodder:

Oh wow, this 10". Finders, yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Rich in Washington:

I finally found THE ONE Van Impe record that has all those desired Negativland samples. I didn't know which one it was, so bought every GODDAMN Van Impe record I found. It's painful to listen to them.
Avatar 7:38pm
Linda Lee:

i've loved thrifting for as long as i could walk in with my own money. it's been quite a while though. my understanding is that many stores are cashing in on their own treasures once they see what similar items sell for online. that's a shame.
Avatar 7:38pm
Otis Fodder:

Rich - I liked the Bandersnatch episode a lot. But then again, I was nuts over Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid in like what was that, 1980 or 1981.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Kat in Chicago:

Ooh I hope I catch that on the stream Mr. Fab. I've heard samples from the one I have used... somewhere? Stuff about the MC5 advocating "open sex on every street corner" and how awful rock'n'roll is in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes. and Goodwill corp is sort of killing all independent thrifts, at least in my town.
Avatar 7:39pm
Linda Lee:

good Lord, Mr Fab, is that what happened to me?
Avatar 7:40pm
Otis Fodder:

Linda - Prices totally have gone up. I avoid Value Village. Plus, living in the city it's all about timing, if I lived out in the country or burbs, I bet I'd have a lot more finds.
Avatar 7:41pm
Linda Lee:

this is so discouraging! there's nothing quite like pulling a gem from the dreck at a thrift store, for no money.
Avatar 7:41pm
Otis Fodder:

I haven't been to a Goodwill in years, but we have Value Village and Salvation here and another called Renaissance (which is the best of the 3).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Rich in Washington:

I did like our Value Village for 7" records, but they've all closed.
Avatar 7:42pm
Linda Lee:

what's happening out here in the country is that what might go to the thrift store in the past is now going to ebay ..
Avatar 7:42pm
Otis Fodder:

Blue Sunshine - Love the soundtrack and the movie.
Avatar 7:42pm
Linda Lee:

terribly awkward post there, sorry.
  7:42pm
Martinibomb:

i don't think I've found anything I wanted at a thriftstore in at least 10 years. it's all crap.. and not good crap. But prior to that.. I'd say maybe half my record collection came from 2nd hand stores
Avatar 7:42pm
Otis Fodder:

That's it. Different time for digging for sure.
Avatar 7:43pm
TimmMcCoy:

I love the Value Village for always giving me their 7" every week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Rich in Washington:

yes. That's what Goodwill does, which is why you suddenly couldn't find any decent records there. That and the newbie hipster influx of record buyers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Rich in Washington:

Have you seen this film? It's incredible. That's where today's gif comes from.
Avatar 7:43pm
Linda Lee:

goddamn it!
  7:44pm
Martinibomb:

I haven't seen it.. been meaning to watch it for years
Avatar 7:45pm
Otis Fodder:

The bulk of my finds come from digger/seller friends or a shop locally who puts aside odd things for me. I hit a shop every 2 weeks or so these days locally. My heavy digging days of going out in the 80s/90s are behind me now. Home with the cats ya know. Old man walkin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm

It's not great, but so goddamn odd. Music's really good, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm

Boom Wow Records in Portland, a record store specializing in R&B 7"s used to put peculiar records aside for me. I loved them. They were awesome.
  7:46pm
JtotheK:

Re: Z Lovers - I’ve probably mentioned before but will again — my bro in law was over one afternoon and I put that record on to listen to. My wife’s cousin came over later, during peak moaning track - and was quite puzzled, thought maybe she was interrupting a private moment. Excellent record!!!
Avatar 7:46pm
Otis Fodder:

Also helps that I do the website for the shop. Barter!
  7:47pm
Martinibomb:

I had a friend who worked at a store that closed. He'd hold stuff for me plus give me a good discount. When it closed he was like come grab all these 78s we got.. which i did.
Avatar 7:47pm
Otis Fodder:

Ha! That's great JK!
Avatar 7:47pm
Linda Lee:

this was actually true of our town recycling center here in the catskills. under one man's management it actually became a truly fantastic free store. just amazing. whenever vinyl came in he'd hold it for me. superb.
Avatar 7:49pm
Linda Lee:

this was totally gratis, since if we didn't take stuff away the town would have to pay to have it hauled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Rich in Washington:

That's hilarious, JtotheK! I had a similar experience when I brought that Mort Garson record home. I had to show it to my housemates so that they didn't think I was watching a synth-scored porn in the other room.
Avatar 7:49pm
