Avatar 1:19pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ah, yes zima.

david'n'london, 24/8/2000, if that helps
  1:23pm David in London:

Thanks Kurt. Yes, it is. I'd seen them at a venue called The Vortex a few years previously, and went back for more at The Klinker Club. Man, Derek Bailey is sorely missed.
  1:23pm zzmz:

clumsy to mi.
Avatar 1:24pm Kurt Gottschalk:

yes, we're fortunate that he liked coming to nyc so much. got to see him quite a bit in the last decade of his life. such an inspiration in so many ways.
  1:29pm David in London:

We stumbled early into the show at the Vortex (it was a rather haphazard affair as a venue) and Bailey was sound-checking. He was playing really smooth Django Reinhardt style jazz guitar, but stopped as soon as he saw someone else in the room. If memory serves, he played on cruise ships in his youth and had a huge repertoire of popular song, though kept it well hidden in his later years...
Avatar 1:32pm Kurt Gottschalk:

yeah, he used to play the dance halls, and would hide under the stage (when not on stage) and play along with what ever was going on. no doubt how he got a taste for discordant and disassociated improvising.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm tim from champaign:

Who's the guitar mangler on this Don Cherry/Penderecki track?
Avatar 1:48pm Kurt Gottschalk:

t from c, terje rypdal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm tim from champaign:

Aha! Thanks.

Avatar 2:41pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar 2:45pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 3:00pm crateslinger:

FYI - We just got approval from SMK to schedule an unofficial WFMU motorcycle rally and ride to Bear Mountain on Memorial Day weekend. Clearly stated, this is not an official WFMU event because of liability and whatever else, but tell anybody you know who wants to ride their machine without being hassled by the man (can't guarantee that last bit). More news to come.
Avatar 3:01pm V Priceless:

cheers KG!
