A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

There was about three minutes left in the show with a hand-off to Rich, but the FMU system has drank too much coffee, I guess.

Hi maidoftin!
  7:11pm
maidoftin:

hiya! I have been missing weird radio shows lately so this is ideal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Rich in Washington:

This whole piece is pretty amazing. I think the Negativlads are planning on getting it issued for the first time. It was only sent to participating radio stations.
  7:12pm
Martinibomb:

found on an open reel at kboo!? whoa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Rich in Washington:

Yes. And an alternate cut of Guns!, which was also a NAW commission originally.
  7:13pm
maidoftin:

I hope so! I thought I had a lot of their stuff already, but there's so much more. Actually you know you could fire it off to archive.org - they already have so much of Over the Edge archived...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Rich in Washington:

curiously, the Guns! piece is credited solely to Don Joyce.
  7:13pm
maidoftin:

or is this literally a reel to reel cut?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Rich in Washington:

originally, but was transferred to WAV by a friend at the station, the guy who found it in KBOO's catacomb like tape storage vault.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Rich in Washington:

but it was sent to the station over ISDN line and someone recorded it on 1/4" open reel, which was how they rolled in the early 90s.
  7:16pm
maidoftin:

That's crazy, I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Rich in Washington:

I need to find those boxes again to take a picture of them, they run-sheets on them. Pretty cool. KBOO recently got a grant to preserve their tape archives.
Avatar 7:19pm
Don-O:

UT! Someone sneezed on tape reels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Rich in Washington:

This McDonald's record is fucking nuts. I need to play more of it in the future.
Avatar 7:20pm
Don-O:

I wonder if there were other titles under the Kidsworks label?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Rich in Washington:

Not sure! Or how many more McDonalds records there are.
  7:21pm
maidoftin:

Vaguely makes me think of those crazy 'auto musicals' that were a thing for a while in the 50's and 60s.

ha, funny...from the kitchen, before the singing started, i thought "this sounds like a melding of the shangri-las & king crimson"
...now - even more so!

HA! Indeed it is!

Of course, The Peanuts were more famous OUTSIDE of Japan for their appearances in the Mothra movies as those tiny twins.
  7:30pm
maidoftin:

Speaking of Japan, this bit sounds like music from Space Cruiser Yamato.

So, what else is in Doc Severinsen's closet? Carson's scalp?!
  7:33pm
maidoftin:

I really, really dig this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Rich in Washington:

Was it Severinsen who Johnny Carson used to hassle because of his wardrobe? I can't remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Rich in Washington:

It's funky, innit? It's also on the Command label, so there's that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Kat in Chicago:

If you'd told me an hour ago that a Doc Severinsen cover of The Court of the Crimson King exists and it's actually good, I would not have believed you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Rich in Washington:

Kat! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm

How's Chicago? Finally warming up a bit, I hope?
  7:37pm
maidoftin:

This is weekly, right? (First time, won't be last assuming I can remember when things happen)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Kat in Chicago:

Yep, I've been tuned to the stream since Otis came on. It has warmed up, was about 16 when I came to work this morning. We get a major thaw this weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Rich in Washington:

@ maidoftin:yes sir! Every week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Rich in Washington:

Yikes! I hope it improves soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm

16 felt very comfortable this morning, after the past two days. Whether or not it's windy makes a BIG difference. Wasn't windy this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
coelacanth∅:

i just realised it's friday - i can crank this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Rich in Washington:

CRANK IT! I am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Rich in Washington:

This song runs through my head often. It might always be playing but I'm just used to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
coelacanth∅:

i know it's not as cold here as in chicago but a can relate. it was about 16f here to this morning and it felt pretty good. the night before the cold water to the bathroom froze, even though i ran the hot a stream all night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Kat in Chicago:

I know a bunch of people here dealing with burst pipes. My landlord isn't the greatest but I believe he did have the pipes weather-protected somehow, no problems in our building.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
coelacanth∅:

i bought the freeze frame album back in the day because i'd heard "i pity inanimate objects" somewhere. now i wonder where i could've heard that back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Rich in Washington:

yeah, that's the cringey moment after deep freezes - how bad are the pipes going to be. Awful. I hope people fare well after all this.
  7:48pm
maidoftin:

Feel so lucky to be in OR, where it's just a little murky and raining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Kat in Chicago:

Gonna be in the 40s tomorrow and Sunday, so flooding's a concern now for some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah, me too! I'm just across the river from Portland. It's been mild, but we've also been known to get snow as late as March where I live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Rich in Washington:

Wow. That's a fast transition, from sub freezing to the 40s. Yikes again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
coelacanth∅:

my pipes didn't burst; i just had no cold (which means the toilet wouldn't flush)
last year it happened once and my landlord lent me an ancient, electricity-gobbling, fire-hazard of a heater to point towards the wall that the pipes are behind. SCREW THAT! i'm running the hot all night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Kat in Chicago:

Even prior to climate change awareness, Chicago has been like that. I moved here in 1980 and the joke has always been "if you don't like the weather in Chicago, wait five minutes." Kind of like what some say about WFMU :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
coelacanth∅:

ha! good analogy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Rich in Washington:

I once lived in a place with all plastic pipes and everything froze solid and when it thawed nothing broke. It was a freaking miracle.

I didn't want to believe it but yiiiiikes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
