YES. One of the stories I use to explain WFMU to people is the time Marty McSorely played this version on his Friday morning show, and then, by coincidence, Sheila played the original a few hours later. Also my introduction to US Girls!

@melinda: Yup. Ironic on Valentines Day as well… And Amazon dumped NYC on Valentine’s day as well! AND THERE ARE NO SWEETHEARTS CANDY THIS YEAR! (Necco wafers got bought out and sold off equipment so they didn’t gear up for this year.)

Gross that Amzn is probably trying to send a message to other cities — basically, “Don’t try to stop us from extorting a huge tax break from you in exchange for being graced with our beatific presence. Don’t even let local politicians say it out loud.”
  1:20pm
JakeGould:

@melinda: Now you have! I’m quite happy. The reality is Amazon already has tons of small offices around NYC and New Jersey. I doubt they will dump them so this new “HQ2 Campus” was a really stupid idea. They should build up in Newark and maybe explore areas like Westchester, Yonkers and maybe even higher up in the Hudson Valley.

How is Amazon really different than that disruptor of commerce Sears in the late 1800's. Sears sold HOUSES. I know this sounds dumb, but I think I'm onto something here. Amazon sells EVERYTHING. So did Sears for awhile. Everybody needs something sometimes, right? If you sell EVERYHING then you sell to EVERYBODY.

Having governement in bed with big business is fascism according to some definitions.
  2:20pm
JakeGould:

In general, passionately imploring anyone to not use Amazon or others is well intentioned buy naive. If Amazon would come to NY/NJ with more jobs that is a good thing. Build out Newark, NJ. Do something in the Bronx of Staten Island. But Long Island City is already vile and rich. Amazon would only accelerate and exacerbate what is happening.

Rich in Washington:

I must say, TV shows have gotten really good with production values lately. I was impressed by how MITHC looked, being a period piece and all, but yeah, the writing was fairly lacking. I felt the same way about the History Channel's silly Project Blue Book. It looks really good, just really trite and corny.

@queems oh ok, I could see that. I actually had some used Bose bookshelf speakers that I managed to blow out without trying very hard.

I want one of those Audio Technica Technics 1200 clones. They don't appear to be as bulletproof as the Technics, but I do like that they have 78 rpm and they can also play records backwards. That's important to me, for some reason.

@kat there is like one subwoofer on ebay that goes with it for $50 but i'm trying to figure out if it is worth it to spend more money on this or just get new speakers

@Rich I've been eyeing the AT-120 USB, or whatever it is, myself. I do need to rip vinyl now and then and I don't have a good setup for it.

Every time I hear Tim Hecker I initially think it's Tim Heidecker and I keep waiting for the joke.

I found three boxes of 78s and 33 1/3 on 10th and 22nd back in the late 90s when everyone thought cds! had replaced LPs

I loved Russian Doll! So now I'm like totally into Natasha Lyonne, and suddenly "But I'm a Cheerleader" shows up on Mubi.

@Rich in Washington-the writing seems dumbed down, like its written for a High School Junior. Justified -inspired by Elmore Leonard (had an ear for DIALOG) is pretty good and explores some subtle shit about character, and who are the good bad guys and the semi bad good guys.

Justified is on Amazon Prime. Mr. Robot is pretty good too.
