photo: is that Tucson in the '70s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Sam Segal:

Vegas in the 70s!
Avatar 9:33pm TDK60:

  9:33pm Carmichael:

Not much difference, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm coelacanth∅:

my guess is 1970 is about the latest on that photo

i'll buy that. (though i don't see any cars that look newer than 1970)
Avatar 9:41pm TDK60:

..lived in Tucson '70-into-'71 as a young longhair. Was warned to stay away from Speedway (like above) by other longhairs: you'd get beaten, so they said.
  9:44pm Carmichael:

I was stationed there in 1980. Really had a good time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm fleep:

Sam, thanks, bookmarked.
Avatar 9:46pm TDK60:

Carmichael- at Davis Monthan air base?
  9:53pm Carmichael:

Yep. I loved the desert landscape. Guess I’m a warm weather person.
Avatar 9:54pm TDK60:

Mt Lemon was amazing.
Avatar 9:58pm still b/p:

Was there only once, for a few days on a work project, but had time for a run down to Nogales and a quick hike up and down Mt. Wrightson. Like to go back to that area of the country and just look around, look around.
Avatar 9:58pm TDK60:

  9:59pm Dean:

Las Vegas? RIP, Robert Venturi.
  10:01pm Dean:

Last time I was there, 1976, for a Yes concert at the Aladdin. Ran around underage the MGM Hotel casino, made five bucks. Vowed never to return. Haven't.
  10:04pm Carmichael:

Lemmon still is amazing. Big observatory up there.
  10:08pm Dean:

Pasqua has been in LA for several years. He worked with the Cline brothers, among many others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Sam Segal:

Oh, very cool. From one underappreciated jazz town to the next. Howdy, Dean!
  10:14pm chresti:

Fleep- #8 says it’s by Ventura beach- it’s more like Ventura Blvd, in the freeway shot
  10:14pm Dean:

I'd say Del Mar, CA, is a seriously underappreciated jazz town, if only because Anthony Ortega has been gigging there lately, at least as recently as 2014. He's still kicking, but I don't know if he plays anymore.
  10:18pm Dean:

That looks like 101/170 south to me, chresti.
  10:20pm chresti:

Yeah, thereabouts, Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm melinda:

hi friends
Avatar 10:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Shot with a long lens. The compression in the photo makes it look worse than it really was(is).
  10:26pm Dean:

OTOH, 101 north is friggin' awful. I know. I've waited there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Sam Segal:

Melinda and Dean! Evening to both of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm fleep:

chresti, clearly captioned by an auslander. Where are the fact checkers? Have we all gone insane?
Avatar 10:35pm Franco Twinkie:

That picture reminds me of when photographers in the 60's-70's would make obvious statements about the horror of modern life. But it is a great photo! I can smell the poison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm coelacanth∅:

i didn't check the facts. i thought you were supposed to check the facts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

this saxophone kills fascists
  10:36pm Dean:

I yearn for the good old days, when there weren't that many facts that needed checking.
Avatar 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, I feel oppressed by the need to be factual.
  10:40pm Dean:

Exactly, Franco. Did you know that recent studies have established that a majority of Americans are happy to forego facts in exchange for consolation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm steppenwolf∅:

and happiness for comfort
  10:41pm Dean:

And in my case, comfort for amplification.
Avatar 10:43pm Franco Twinkie:

Hard facts are great when you want to kick some doofus in the nuts, but otherwise you're loading your basket with a lot of rocks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

maybe that's what's going on. i've had a headache for a few days and it feels like the rocks in my head have shifted so the jagged edges and points are pressing against my skull.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm coelacanth∅:

today would've been the first day in weeks or months that i didn't hear Jessica Pratt
  10:53pm chresti:

Coel- I’ve heard from someone that knows about sharp rocks that if you add sand and water, then shake vigorously, the sharp edges will smooth out
  10:54pm Dean:

Huh, any connection to the Italian pop-synth-classical guy, Reverberi?
  10:54pm chresti:

Also add emergency-c powder for headache
  10:55pm Dean:

Stream interruption...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm fleep:

And you're back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

  10:56pm Dean:

Now, that's freeform.
  10:56pm Dean:

Missed the crackelbarrel riff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

just got the beginning of the crack riff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm fleep:

Crackerbarrels these days are MAGA nests. Avoid.
  10:57pm chresti:

Nice set Sam -oops Cracker Barrel must of hit the switch
  10:58pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm coelacanth∅:

chresti @ 10.53 i'll try that.
i guess i should use sterile play sand right?
  10:59pm chresti:

Never been to Cracker Barrel -full of crackers, sounds like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm coelacanth∅:

i don't know what a crackerbarrel is. i just know what crackerbarrel brand cheese is. (crap)
  11:00pm Dean:

Haven't been to Cracker Barrel. But have been to Sambo's.
  11:01pm chresti:

Coel-right, safe sand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Sam Segal:

I wonder if Cracker Barrel is more of a Midwest and Southeast thing.
Avatar 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Haven't been to Sambo's, but I have been to Bimbo's.(crap)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

and then what, get on an old wooden rollercoaster?
Avatar 11:04pm Franco Twinkie:

Put some white gravy on that.
  11:04pm Dean:

I do believe it is. Founded in Lebanon, Tennessee, but by now has locations (franchises?) all over, because of course that vibe sells.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm fleep:

always practice safe sand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm coelacanth∅:

"crackerbarrel"; "sambos"; "bimbos"...yeah these rocks aren't doing me any good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Sam Segal:

Lebanon, Tennessee! Hell, I may have been to the original Cracker Barrel there.
Avatar 11:07pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, I suggest a hot compress of american cheese on your forehead.
  11:09pm Dean:

And of course there's Hooters, based (aptly) in two cities, Atlanta and Clearwater. Still going strong. Remarkable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

like, fondue? is it okay if friends sit around and gradually clean me up with bread?
Avatar 11:11pm Franco Twinkie:

And let's not forget Bloopers in Oklahoma City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

i'm pretty sure there used to be hooters in nj.
could be wrong.
that's not my bag, baby.
Avatar 11:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, I don't want to come off as a busy body, but are you getting enough protean?
  11:14pm Dean:

I spent part of the weekend at an Apple store, and I haven't quite recovered from the trauma. The smell of capitalism is rank. I want to promote a "Hold your tongue and say..." ad campaign. Think they'll buy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm coelacanth∅:

sure i'm multitasking right now.
Avatar 11:14pm still b/p:

Cracker Barrel herein Maine, three miles away in a mall-and-more-strip-malls neighborhood! Haven't been! Ain't goin'! There's also a Tilted Kilt over in that zone, too. Hooters with tartan miniskirts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Sam Segal:

Ya'll ever been to a Texas Roadhouse? Another one of my favorite road trip chains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm coelacanth∅:

...or did you mean protons, cuz i can't count them. the swirling electrons are very distracting.
  11:16pm Dean:

Been to a Roadhouse Grill. Probably not the same.

Many decades ago, my mom worked for Jolly Roger.
Avatar 11:16pm Franco Twinkie:

I had food poisoning in Texas. A treasured memory.
Avatar 11:18pm Franco Twinkie:

No, I meant won tons.
  11:18pm Dean:

You probably dined in New Mexico before you drove into Texas, Franco. You know how heavily regulated Texas businesses are.
  11:19pm chresti:

If you can’t find a roller coaster, a barrel might work, (roll down a hill inside of it). With play sand, be sure to check for needles and razor blades. @coelacanthø
Avatar 11:21pm Franco Twinkie:

Actually, it was in New Mexico where I had the breakfast sausage from hell, but it didn't go off until I was in Texas.
  11:21pm Dean:

See? And there you are blaming poor little Texas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm fleep:

The Yarn/Wire is so Bryce/Blumin I forgot I was on a horse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm melinda:

@b/p I didn't know we had a Cracker Barrel here. So many unknown gems. Also, remember when there was a big fight over letting Hooters open a location downtown? I had insomnia one night and ended up watching the live debate at city hall on access TV, with people testifying for and against.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

how about the rumble seat of a model a?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Sam Segal:

@Fleep: I am a total Bryce head, so that's a great compliment to me.
Avatar 11:25pm Franco Twinkie:

But since I was only nineteen years old, I was eating a bacon sandwich with a strawberry milkshake by the time I was in Oklahoma City. It was a different America back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm coelacanth∅:

...i mean if i could just find my horse i'd have my solution.
Avatar 11:26pm northguineahills:

Ok, back!
  11:26pm Dean:

I'm not sure America has ever been different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Sam Segal:

Welcome back, NGH!
Avatar 11:27pm still b/p:

Speaking of local commerce, melinda -- you were talking last week about teff. They have the grain from Bob's Red Mill at Reny's downtown, but not the flour. Who do you know with a big ol' millstone operation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm coelacanth∅:

i wouldn't like a bacon milkshake, even if i'm sandwiched between 2 strawberry 19 year olds.
Avatar 11:28pm northguineahills:

I have a sticker w/ an image of an analogue punch/cord moog synth, that says, "This machine kills fascists". Also have one of the Woody original...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm coelacanth∅:

they have teff flour at vitacost (.com) if it comes down to that.
Avatar 11:31pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, psychically, no. Same old crap till the end of time. However, It did look better once upon a time.
Avatar 11:31pm northguineahills:

Haven't been to a cracker barrel since I was 15. It was either that, or NY Giant's LB Lawrence Taylor's personal restaurant in Passaic that made me so ill it destroyed my GI tract. Even my fundy parents have been back to cracker Barrel...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

ngh my comment was in reference to this: thissaxophonekillsfascists.bandcamp.com
(which i happen to've bought an album from a week or 2 ago)
Avatar 11:33pm northguineahills:

*even my parents' haven't been back to a cracker barrel since*
Avatar 11:33pm still b/p:

The photo references earlier sent me looking and scrolling, and mention of the "recently invented Moog synthesizer" shows up in #6 in this 1969 set:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm melinda:

Thanks for the teff tips, guys. I might try the halal markets too, I've just been too tired/lazy to deviate from my usual errand paths.
Avatar 11:35pm northguineahills:

@coel: I got mine from a powernoise artist from up north, I gave it to my wife as she it's building a modular synth, I don't remember which artist it's associated w/, but I remember it was a her (I'd have to find the cd of hers I purchased.
Avatar 11:36pm northguineahills:

ok, giving up on braining...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm melinda:

Ever since one of my old chums posted on fb that she might be moving to Albuquerque I've been googling it, and today's photo reminds me of some of the old Rte 66 establishments still there. I have negative memories of southwestern sprawl from my youth but also some really good memories of visits to old motels like the ones that populated the Route. Would be fun to visit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

ngh of course they all (incl Arrington de Dionyso) got it from Woody
  11:38pm Dean:

Seth Graham, new to me! (apparently the last comprehensible phrase I can type tonight, salud, mis amigos!).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

there's mention of the moog but i don't see it in that picture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm coelacanth∅:

(unless...i guess it's incorporated into that system, and a lot of it's hidden)
Avatar 11:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, I just read Tosh Berman's memoir. He talks abut about going to visit Dennis Hopper at his compound in Taos. Apparently, all the dirt bag hippies that decended on New Mexico were loathed by the culturally conservative natives, especially Dennis.
  11:53pm Dean:

You should check out Ben's book, Franco.
Avatar 11:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Will do!
Avatar 11:59pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Sam for a great show. One of my favorite Lou Reed records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am melinda:

I think there is a documentary about Dennis Hopper holed up at the compound trying to edit The Last Movie (which I just saw at a local screening). I'd like to see it now that I've seen the movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am fleep:

Thanks, Sam!
