Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm

I became aware of the WFMU due to the press it was receiving during the "troubles" somewhere in late 1989 early 1990. It was one of many stops down at that end of the dial becoming a more avid listener a year or two later when I was sure to catch Bronwyn's Truckstop Teaparty every week.

I think I've told this before. KMOX AM 1120, the Mighty Mox in Saint Louis had a morning drive show that had a sort of daily contest where you could call in to win something mundane or lose something in the form of being subjected to humiliation by a sound clip, which usually this guy singing badly about a 'Lover Without a Cause'. I really wanted a copy of that song, for reasons that is a much longer story. A few years later a web search led me to 'Incorrect Music'. My life has never been then same.

I had just moved to New Jersey from Brighton MA at the end of summer 1979, and was in despair at the state of NYC radio. Dial-hopping down at the bottom end, like a lot of folks, I caught WFMU for the first time in the final minutes of Irwin's show. Within minutes, I knew I had found what I was looking for. In addition to Irwin, other early favorites included the Immigrant, Jim Price and John Narucki. Wasn't much longer before I became a fan of other (now) old timers like Kelly, Brainan and O'Toole. I made my first marathon pledge the following spring, and have never looked back.

I know I've told it before, but it was late 1980 or early 1981 when Alan Hyams said if I wanted to hear this punk stuff I'd just read about, listen to Frank O'Toole and Pat Duncan (and Morbid) -- as well as to a couple shows on WFDU and maybe WSOU, but I didn't stick with them. Soon my listening spread to Jim Price, then Bill Kelly and Irwin.

But then I moved a short distance downhill in the Bronx into a shadow zone where I had to go to my car (when I had one) or at least outside to hear WFMU. Then came the pirates on 91.1, and limited my WFMU listening even further. But then I found open WiFis I could get the stream on.

My WFMU listening kept increasing, such that when I moved here in WMFU territory (mono) with Steve Mason, who I then found out had been a listener since the 1970s and donated more than me, he said I was into the station WAY more than he was.

I also found out in recent years that my Cousin Allan was a listener and especially appreciated that many DJs here promoted new and local acts.

I grew up in the broadcast range of 90.1fm in the Hudson valley. As a teenager hanging out with other skateboarders in the 90’s, there was an odd fellow in our group that would sit in his car and listen to these odd fictional stories by a guy named Joe Frank. This friend would become my punk rock mentor exposing me to the punk shows on Thursday nights, who Ken Freedman will remember the host. I’ve continued listening ever since! moving to the 91.1FM range in my 20’s & 30’s and being able to travel worldwide with the WFMU app. As a young and now aging punk, I’ve enjoyed the independent freeform minded programming ever since being exposed to WFMU.

I think it was the mailorder catalogs in the late 80s or so that first attracted my attention to WFMU

Listener Paul:

I remember as an 80s teen growing up on the Jersey shore reading an article (perhaps in The Aquarian, but I cannot say for sure) about "The Greatest Station in NY is actually in NJ". I wanted to listen to that station, but alas, reception was spotty at best, so I made due with WHTG and sometimes WRSU (the Rutgers Station). And so, I knew about a station but never really lived in a place where I could get reliable reception. I'd listen driving up the Parkway to visit my girlfriend sometimes, but that was it. Even when I started grad school in New Brunswick, reception was difficult. I do remember a Bronwyn C show where she talked about 17th century English radicals, a topic I was very much interested in, but again, my listening in the early 90s was irregular. Until I found myself moving to Bloomfield in 1998. Where reception was crystal clear. And I was working from home much of the time, and so I listened. A lot. The shows I remember from those days include Chris T, Glen Jones, Hova, but really I listened to lots of the programming. And I became a supporter soon after. Fortunately, when I moved from Bloomfield down to Arkansas, the internet meant I would never be out of broadcast range again. I do miss the donor map.
