Favoriting March 15, 2019: WFMU Marathon Show #2 w/ Marcel M!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

2019 makes it 40 years since my family skidded onto the tarmac at JFK. 'Twas the culmination of a disorienting 15-month long emigration process from the U.S.S.R with stops in Austria and Italy along the way. Remembering this anniversary also made me think of 1979 in another way - as a year in which so many phenomenal debut albums came into existence (Unknown Pleasures! A Trip to Marineville! This Heat!). And this, freeformists, is how my 2019 WFMU premium was born!

With all material recorded especially for this compilation, Your Song, My Foot! Volume III: The 1979 Edition is brimming with cover versions and re-imaginings of tracks found on some of the killerest debut LP's of 1979! On cassette for extra wow and flutter, the premium comes with a download code for those in love with modern living!

The crackerjack artists doing the covering include:
Phew, Tomutonttu, Stuart Chalmers, The Righteous Yeah (Michael Morley of the Dead C), Ed Bear, Mike Cooper, German Army, Natalia Beylis, Strotter Inst., Storm Bugs, The Dead Mauriacs, Infinite Article (Robert Horton & Edward Guerriero), The Pheromoans, and Richard Thomas!

The humdinger of a cover drawing is by John Godbert, the very same artist who drew the cover of The Fall's 1979 seminal debut LP - Live at the Witch Trials! John says, "It’s based on a wooden statue of a female figure that was found in a loch in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century. She was a goddess who protected the loch & turned out to be 5,000 yrs old. This is very “Witch Trials” related, & MES would have liked it."

More than much gratitude to John and all of the musicians for their wunderschnapps contributions!!!

John from Florham Park:

TDK60 I was in 8th grade that year
  9:38pm
P-90:

@John from FP: 1979 was the year it became clear that the pop/rock styles that had prevailed through the 70s were indeed about to yield in a big way to the influence of New Wave/Punk/other stuff, and Disco (still very big in 79) was also about to yield to (what became) Hip Hop. These things were already looming pre-79, and the evolution certainly continued after, but 79 itself felt pivotal.

TDK: in 79 WFMU was one of those stations over at the end of the dial, along with the Fordham U station and the Seton Hall U station, where you went to hear all this new music that was happening. The middle of the dial was still largely Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Police etc, and several dedicated Disco stations, if you can imagine that.

Oh dear, dancing in the Mudd Club to the Flying Lizards. . .I have to pull out that LP to see if "Russia" is on it. . .

That “My Sharona” was the big single of 79 exemplifies that idea about the turning point the music biz was at. Also similarly important to note: 1979 was the year The Pretenders arrived!

Also, one of my favorite neighbor was this woman who lived in a bungalow shack filled to the brim with rescued discarded crap. Nice looking place. Never went in it. Sometimes she would run back into her shack when me and my mom came by and would give me some simple toy—ball or similar—she rescued from a landfill.

P-90 re: "My Sharona" -- I have to wonder. . .I mean, weren't the charts then, kind of. . a lie? I was always dubious. (I almost said "remember the conspiracy theory that The Knack was The Beatles, but that was Klaatu. . .) and YES for The Pretenders!

re: This Heat -- a friend referenced a recent interview with the surviving members in National Sawdust, but I can't find the link, sorry. . .
  11:16pm
P-90:

miss g: no, My Sharona was not a “false hit”. Everybody loved it because it’s damn good. But more to the point: it had that “unpretentious”, “back to rock n roll roots” quality that was a guiding aesthetic in the New Wave/Punk/etc trend of that time. It was very influential on bands that were coming up, looking for their first representation and record deals in that period.

*L* Yes, Jake Gould, so embarrassed, yes, it is by a WFMU DJ, that link you gave, thanks! (the person was from Italy and so I didn't put it all together.) P-90, "My Sharona" sure, I dig that, as I say, I bought it, I loved that record, even if friends turned up their noses at me. <G>

krestina, great! I spent many a time at Max's! Daniel, did you see the greatest animation of all time (OK, just my favorite) "The Mitten" "Варежка" by Roman Kachano?

JakeGould:

@Krestina: “Dancing in the Soviet Union was probably one of a few officially permitted types of entertainment.” And this… “Each dancing event required an official title explaining the reason why people were dancing there. The explanation should have reflected the latest guidelines from the Central Committee of the Communist Party, or the latest speech of General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev, or some kind of a slogan about benefitting Soviet people’s health.” www.rbth.com...
