Dean:

The notion that there is a "cheesy" ECM is, to my mind, a myth. Prior to tuning in tonight I was listening to a Craig Taborn ECM record. It has that arguably "cheesy" ECM sound, which has everything to do with the engineering and production, the "house sound," of Eicher's records. But when you have amassed a catalog as vast and exploratory as his, "cheesy" simply doesn't enter the equation. I can think of a lot of celebrated artists played on WFMU whose music is almost by definition cheesy, and yet it's celebrated for that fact. I won't name names, though I have done so in various comments over the years.
Avatar 11:47pm
northguineahills:

I think I mentioned the double LP of Ricardo Villalobos remixing the whole ECM back catalog.
  11:48pm
Dean:

I keep meaning to grab that one, and I seem to recall seeing it in a used bin years ago, but passing it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Sam Segal:

Yeah, it's not really Eicher's production that's cheesy to me. It's a certain cloying, melodic twinkle-twinkle on some ECM records that I find cheesy, but of course I really enjoy a lot of music I would describe as cheesy. Definitely not a disqualifying aesthetic. "Cheesy" is obviously not the most precise word.
  12:00am
Dean:

I consider a friend of mine in high school whose album-acquiring prowess was monumental, but who referred routinely to Henry Cow and assorted Canterbury-style bands as "diddling around." Which of course fairly describes their music from a certain point of view. He was implicitly contrasting their records to, say, the Wagnerian/Mahlerian magnum opus progressive rock bands: Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, Le Orme, Grobschnitt, etc. I soon came to recognize that what he called "diddling around" was a perfectly legitimate and enjoyable mode of musical production, not worthy of being burdened by the derogatory implication of the otherwise accurate characterization.
