Kimzilla and Emily explore the world of birdwatching, but of course in typical IRL tradition, we couldn’t just talk to a typical birder, nope, instead we talk to Matt Smith who is a published writer, geographer, and web developer who has been chasing birds for most of his life and created a game called Fantasy Birder, where you virtually find birds using crowd sourced data. We also talk to Tony Croasdale, Environmental Education Program Specialist at Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and self- identified member of the DIY anarcho-punk community. Join us as we enter the sub-sub culture of birders (real and imaginary) on In Real Life.

i had an eastern bluebird for the first time and so i made a couple of houses. as soon as i put them up he disappeared but some other birdies seem to be interested so we'll see what happens.
  7:14pm
Kate:

@dale they DO respond, usually they just look around a bit, but some of them fly up to our window and look in. One of them cussed me out completely.
  7:17pm
Kate:

@dale that is so exciting, I would love to have one eat out of my hand. Online, I've seen hummingbirds drink out of coke bottle caps that people are holding.

Kate:

@queems I thought all the squirrels were at my house

Hey~ It is OSC from Nevada. There are geese that visit annually here. They pair for life & each time they fly over my place they are honking & carrying on faster than a gaggle of Spanish women!

The house we are moving to is on a little cove just off the Chesapeake. We've seen mallards, a kingfisher, a blue heron, and an osprey so far. Neighbor says he's seen a wood duck, a red head duck, and a a bald eagle but I have not yet.

Great show tonight. Birds rule. I have a small garden on fire escape in Hoboken that has plants and a small bird bath. In the summer all kinds of birds come in and out of garden all day long. If I'm lucky something strange and rare will land in it.

And I've never claimed to see a bird I didn't see :)

On the farm as a kid, I noticed my dad skip around killdeer nests out in the field. When I was driving the tractor in my teens, I'd also drive around them. Mom killdeer running off faking a broken wing. She probably thought her ruse was effective against the massive roaring tractor that spared her nest.
  7:52pm
Kate:

@fullmetalmonkey hummingbirds can't carry coconuts

@kimzilla. Fishing is nothing like bird watching. Unless your using bread as bait on the end of a stun gun. Then it would be similar

@kate. If it was a European humming bird perhaps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

It seems to me that there anren't as many songbirds as there used to be. Plenty of vultures wheeling overhead, though. I don't think I've seen a meadowlark back home for maybe twenty years. I remember hearing their calls around sunset.
  7:56pm

@dale and then me and my dad would search for arrow heads and such!

@ken - Habitat loss..... The native songbirds can't handle the urban environment, and are squeezed out by House Sparrows and Starlings (both of which were deliberately introduced from Great Britain).
